    Aside from how useful the GMT complication is, the compass trick is so nice for tool GMTs like an Explorer II for example.

      @@DIYWatchClub LOL you can use any analog watch for that, it has got nothing to do with GMTs

    I'm not gonna lie. I am so ignorant on gmt function but I still bought an alpinist gmt. I watched a few vids and thought my gmt was broken until I watched this. This was the only video that explained it like for dummies (me). Thank you brother

    I like to use the GMT hand to track the Zulu time on the chapter ring. If I’m traveling short trips, I track the local time rotating the bezel. This way I keep my home time in the hour hand and the Zulu time makes it for a reference to adjust to a new time zone.
    If I’m not traveling, I have 2 options: when I need to track another time zone, I rotate the bezel. When I don’t, I rotate the bezel to my local time and leave it there.
    Finally, if it’s a long trip, I use the Zulu time to calculate the new local time. Let’s say I travel to Tokyo (GMT+9). Before I set the hour and minute hands, I set the GMT hand on the chapter ring to 9 hours before the hour hand. Then, when I set the hour and minute hands to Tokyo’s local time, I will get both Tokyo and Zulu at the same time. I just need to rotate the bezel to my home time and it’s all set.
    Amazing video!

    I have my GMT hand set at 0:00 GMT time (which happens to be London which I need to track too) and then set the bezel to 5 hours ahead...so 5 is at the top marker to track India (and I have to mentally add 30 minutes to it)...I have a batman bezel so it's nice to see night and day visually on that GMT hand (or picture it at 24 centered to calculate London time).

    The three time zone thing, you don't need a marked chapter ring. With the GMT bezel zeroed, set the 2nd time zone. Then rotate the bezel for the 3rd time zone. To read the 2nd time zone, just double the number it's pointing to on the main dial markers. So 8 = 16. That tiny bit of mental arithmetic isn't difficult.

    Any watch can be used as a compass. As North is always half way between 12 and the hour hand... In the northern hemisphere this would be south....

    If making your own watch you could use a 12 hour bezel instead of a 24 hour one. Not quite as elegant, but the reason I say this is because there is a better selection of 12-hour bezels on the market right now.

    • @DIYWatchClub
      @DIYWatchClub  ปีที่แล้ว

      I could see this work with a 24 hour chapter ring and using the main hour hand with the bezel exclusively. But I agree that 24 hour bezel inserts are largely still a niche. Hopefully that changes with the release of the NH34

    Sir i have a confusion, as i live in Punjab, India. The gmt time here is +5:30 and i want to set the gmt hand time to Madrid, Spain which is -4:30 minutes from my home time(india). How do i set it??
    I have the same seiko ssk series mikan orange

    • @DIYWatchClub
      @DIYWatchClub  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately the SSK series, like most GMT watches, tracks only in full hour increments. For watches that tracks in smaller increments, which are extremely rare, you can check out Orient Star Seeker (inner bezel at half hour increment) or Glashutte Original Senator Cosmopolite.

    • @DIYWatchClub
      @DIYWatchClub  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Though, on a normal watch you can easily read the half hour time by reading the minute hand backward, i.e. read the minute mark directly opposite to where it's pointing. A bit of a workaround but if you're tracking home time, you'll have more reps doing it so it should become more and more habitual over time. Hope this helps.
