Annie Le Outside
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 ก.ค. 2020
Hi, Im Annie, a scottish lass living in the highlands. I love being outside surrounded by mountains and am happiest in my tent. I bikepack, hike and packraft all around the highland and sometimes further away. Join me on my adventures and see some of Scotland most beautiful places.
Solo hiking the Cairn Gorm 4000s in Winter
In early December 2024 we had a few incredible weather days forcast. Storm Darragh had brought us snow, so i decided to head out and play in my local mountains. The Cairn Gorm 4000 route takes in the five summits above 4000ft in the Cairngorms. Cairn Gorm, Ben Macdui, Cairn Toul, Sgor an Lochain Uaine (Angles Peak) and Braeriach. Depending on the exact route taken, it is somewhere around 35km with 2400m ascent. In a slight variation the the classic route, i headed up the East ridge of Cairn Toul, which is a lovely grade 1 scramble. Whilst for some folk the challenge is to get around as fast as possible, I was more interested in maxxing out the good weather and hanging out with the mountains for as long as possible.

The Pink Dots- A story from the Highland Trail 550
มุมมอง 14Kปีที่แล้ว
Join the 2022 the womens field as they take on the highland trail 550, a 550 mile, self supported bikepacking race in the scottish highlands. The route is rugged and technical, with lots of river crossing and steep climbing. The scenery is stunning though and makes the journey so worthwhile. The scottish weather is always fickle and it didnt give the riders an easy time. I wanted this film to s...

Ive never had the chance to build a bike from scratch. So when this opportunity came up i was so excited, i decided to make a wee video. We were really pushed for workshop time so its not quite as fancy a video as i imagined, but hopefully you will like it. Bikepacking with a hammock
มุมมอง 9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Id never Hammock camped before, but took one for a local overnighter to try it out! I live in one of the more forested parts of Scotland, so it make sense to have a hammock. Often the forest floor is knee deep in blaeberry plants and very lumpy, so pitching a tent can be hard. for this video i visited an amazing bit of woodland that ive always wanted to spend the night in. I found tha hammock e...
Cairngorms snow hole and bikepacking adventure
มุมมอง 10K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a trip ive wanted to do for a long time. Making the most of firm, late season snow to ride up high in the hills and digging a snow hole to stay in. From complete erie whiteout, to a gorgeous sunrise, i loved being up high to see the light changes and soak in the amazing views.
Bikepacking The Cairngorms
มุมมอง 4.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Summer 2020 and after emerging from lockdown, a group of us got together to head out for a few nights bikepacking around the Cairngorms national park. We started in very wet and windy conditions as a big low front passed over Scotland. The weather improved slightly and we had a great time swimming and camping. The midges were horrendous on our second night after the wind dropped.
Around the Long Island
มุมมอง 4.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A circumnavigation around South Uist, also called the Long Island, by fatbike and packraft. Shipwrecks, underground caverns and soaring cliffs made this a spectacular and interesting journey. Endless beaches run down the west with the mightly atlantic crashing down. The east has the calmer minch waters and a coastline of skerrries and caves. With heaps of history in the land, the Uist Islands a...
Highland Trail 550 Gear Breakdown (2021)
มุมมอง 4.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
The Highland trail 550 is a 550 mile bikepacking route in the Scottish Highlands. Every year in late May, a group start "race" is organised. I finished the group start in 5 days 9 hours ish. 12 place and first lady. This video shows the kit i took with me and why. The forcast for 2021 was much colder than average with strong northerly winds and heavy rain arriving on sunday night for around a d...
Would you like ice with that?
มุมมอง 14K3 ปีที่แล้ว
February 2021 saw me immersing myself into ice cold water every day, in an attempt to raise money for The Cairn Project (cairnproject.org/). It was a reluctant choice of fundraiser after my initial idea to ride the Highland Trail 550 got Covid axed. This was the only idea I could come up with that fitted into the covid lockdown guidlines in Scotland. This film follows my swimming (or dipping) j...
Cairngorms winter Bikepacking
มุมมอง 10K4 ปีที่แล้ว
With snow finally in the Cairngorms, we headed out from the door to enjoy some winter riding and camping. Temperatures rose from -8 to plus 1 overnight, leaving the snow heavy and sticky for our ride home.
Winter Solstice Bikepacking
มุมมอง 4.9K4 ปีที่แล้ว
A spur of the moment decision saw me head out on the 21st December for a small overnight adventure. Rain, sleet, wind and sunshine gave me the full scottish winter experiance. Looking forward to longer days and lighter nights!
Broken Roads - Bikerafting in Knoydart
มุมมอง 5K4 ปีที่แล้ว
A wee film about a wet, late Autumn mission that we did through Knoydart last year. Its been up on vimeo for a while but thought Id move it over. We were out for three nights and used packrafts and fatbikes to put together a cool, if very boggy route.
Hyperlite Mountain Gear tent comparison
มุมมอง 31K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video shows the Hyperlite Mountain gear Dirigo 2, Ultamid 2 and Ultamid 4 tents. I made this to answer alot of the questions that i get asked about them and to help anyone considering getting one. They are a big financial investment, one that we deliberated over for a long time, but are glad we made. Any questions ask away!
Scottish Bikepacking Setup
มุมมอง 48K4 ปีที่แล้ว
This video shows you my bikepacking setup for scotland, refined over 10 years. It will show you where i pack kit and what im carrying. Its not a fast and light setup, its a nice comfy one. We are all different though so what works for me might not work for you, but it should give you a good idea. Id love to know what you do different, and any questions please ask.
Do you still have the bike?
I do, i love her.
Hi Annie, that was a phenomenal trip and an equally good film to match. First time I've come across you on youtube and that was top drawer, well done. I've done that route in summer but hats off to you going solo in winter. Thanks for also highlighting good toilet practice up there, it's so important for folk to know and many are hesitant to ask... Looking forward to watching more of your videos, cheers 👍
Thanks so much James! Its a wonderful route in any season :)
Love hammock camping BUT I always stick a tarp up just incase. You can pitch it in a way that you still get that completely open view around you from the comfort of the hammock
Oh for sure! I didnt have one then, but i do now :)
Who needs skis when you have a MTB, great trip !
A pretty far-out adventure Annie. I think the highlight for me had to be the sea/kayak. I imagine the sea cave to mesmeric and a moment of cools and far-outs. Ha ha! You had some nice coastal pitches too and hey cheese. Well, good going. Mark
Cheers Mark! The sea paddling was incredible! I highly recomend it.
@@annieleoutside6044 Alright there Annie-yeah I bet it was. Have a great 2025.
Wow. Great video Annie! Amazing set up. Loved your positivity & enthusiasm, and and you caught perfect weather.
Thank you, i was so lucky with that weather!
Great video! I am Amelia from HITWAY, an ebike brand, we want to cooperate with you, are you interested?😀
What a great film. Great effort getting these hills done and with a winter camp. You have really captured the majesty of Scotland’s winter mountains. I’m looking forward to watching your other videos over the Festive break. Thanks very much and safe travels in the hills.
Thank you! Its easy to capture when the conditions are so good :)
Great video of snowy peacful mountains................ wish I'd been there too :)
Cheers!
Amazing conditions☺ Did a similar trip in summer but not attempted anything like that in winter. Can I ask please what sleeping pad & bag you used? Got a Thermarest Neoair Xlite but don't think that will be enough for the cold.
I have the xtherm, which i use all year round as im a cold sleeper. I used a hyperlite quilt rated to -6C with a rab quilt rated to 4C inside. I also have primaloft trousers and a big down jacket that i sleep in.
I really enjoyed this, just has a such a great vibe. Beautiful, uncomplicated & chilled. I'll sub & see some more of your adventures. 👌
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Beautifully filmed little masterpiece. You have caught the spiritual essence of mountains in winter perfectly. It's a sub from me 👍
Thank you ☺
🙌🏻 ↟↟This video is absolutely crazy:) .. Love it☃️❄️🤍
Cheers 😆
Great trip especially given the time of year ! Thanks
Cheers :)
Ah what a lovely adventure and beautiful video! Thanks for carrying us with you 😊 ❤
Thank you, thats very kind :)
Brilliant video Fantastic visability Thank you for the interesting video and your winter adventure. Fabulous place to camp on top of Ben Mac - that wild wind monkey of a hill - with not a jot of puff to russel the feathers of a budgie. Bet it was a bit nippy. Great video please make more videos ❤
Thanks, appreciate it! Yes, best weather ive had up there.
Your video was truly beautiful and inspiring. As a fellow creator, I appreciate the effort you put into it. Sub and 👍
Cheers!
Great cinema work Annie and looked like an epic little trip
Thank you, it was such a great few days!
Really enjoyed your video..... Great weather for your adventure.... Superb
Thank you, yes, i felt so lucky with the weather.
What a brilliant video, so nicely filmed. I know what you mean about a special place. Braeriach was my first big mountain, my dad took me up as a boy, the view from the summit of Braeriach took my breath away, that was me hooked. Those windless winter days are magical.
Oh wow, what an incredible mountain to start with!
A good watch. Thank you
thanks 🙂
Incredible trip Annie. So many ascendant moments - 'magic,' as you said. I enjoyed your company - pos vibes there. All the best. Mark
Cheers Mark, it was special out there!
@@annieleoutside6044 A pleasure Annie. It felt special. Peace all week.
Truly amazing, stunning video it is now on the bucket list of things to do
Thank you, its a brilliant route so I hope you find the time and wish you such nice weather
Stunning
Thanks, it was a really special one.
Great video and winter conditions 👍🙂❄️
Thanks, those conditions were dreamy :)
@annieleoutside6044 🙂👍
Beautifully captured thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks so much 🙂
Why do you need to do that when you can just carry a shuvle make a hole. Poop in it then cover it up and then it decays on its own? There is poo lying around from many other animals. We are animals too 💩😅. It's un acceptable to leave it raw there but aslong as its covered by a big rock and well off the path or something. Surely that's OK. If it's winter though yeah you don't have much option do you. But again itl just decay with the melt even if you just burry it in the snow. Surely. Not sure many people will carry your poop to that extreme 😅 as long as its done off the path and berries and covered. It's poop in the end. It's nature. It decays. Same as all the other poop cows made hhaa Brilliant video 🙏 not many girls out there doing nice solid proper winter camps like this 👍👍
You can't shovel a hole in the ground when it's frozen, it can be rock hard ground. People drink from the streams here which are seen to be pristine, there are thaws quite often and it's nice to not have raw poo washed quickly into the streams. I've seen shit that's been buried under snow then exposed by a thaw, it's not nice. This is what's recommended by the Cairngorms Park, the various estates and also mountaineering organisations, it's what they are asking people to do, and is recommended practice that's well known. Also, pathogenically not all poop is the same, and neither is it the same with regards to how it decomposes and affects a fragile environment, your view is simplistic. In some areas in the Cairngorms there has been a real problem with excessive waste buried in snow, it's not a big deal to carry it out.
Exactly what @moab_in said. The uk is actually really far behind other countries in dealig with human waste. In many countries it is a requirement to carry out human waste in national parks. We are lucky that we can still drink the water untreated in most of the highlands, but there are areas which are now recomended to avoid due to contaminination from human poo. Human poo also carries all sort of undigested medicines and hormones from things we take, which then contaminate the enviroment. The Cairn Gorms are high mountains with arctic like conditions, so that even in summer it is often too cold for any meaningful decomposition. There are also high use areas used for camping and snowholing, which is why this scheme was introduced, in 2007 to reduce the very obvious pollution.
Yep all well said. I have my own poo tube that I use with poo bags and disinfect it between trips. Ideal for the environment especially with the level of footfall nowadays. More people more poo 💩😊
@overthescottishhill5687 it all just turns into the land 😅. If its berried. It's fertiliser. Yeah people dont berry their poo which is bad. . It's an idea aye, but not sure carrying it is what many people would do rather than buy a shuvle and burry it is easier. Again, what do animals do? 😅 It's not exactly littering plastic. Mind u it's very rare that I have a poop out anyway in the winter days on a camp. Very rare. But it's a good idea just cant see how many ppl would do it. Plus not as many people out on winter days anyway The last thing someone wants to do is deal with their own poo like it's a dogs. So that's why u ether hold it 😅 and do it once back or burry it. Its just the most natural and hydenic way. That plastic bag ur throwing away every time ain't good for the environment but poo doesn't matter haha
@@annieleoutside6044 and every product we buy aimlessly too gets dumped in waste land in other countries not our country . All these extra clothes we need to replace our old ones with ect ect... These plastic bags I guesse we use every time to scoop that poop into the poop box maybe? That's much worse. Anyway. I get the idea behind it. But I still think a trowel is better. It is discusting people out these days don't care though as they arnt outdoorsy people as much as true outdoorsy people are they are out for the bag and otherwise don't care. So least it promotes them to do something about it perhaps. Cux they wouldn't go through the hassle of a trowel. I guesse
This video found me right when I needed a little break but didn't have the opportunity to actually go out for long. So thanks for taking us along, I really enjoyed those views and the soothing music right now!
Aw so glad it helped you. I hope you will be able to back out soon :)
Hi Annie great vid very inspiring. Is that the hyper lite 2 tent.?
Cheers! Yes it is :)
WOW, simply stunning! Great footage Annie, thanks very much for that 🏔️⛺🙂👍
Thanks so much for watching!
@annieleoutside6044 It's always a pleasure to watch your videos 🙂👍
@@tonypaddler Aw appreciate that 😊
Amazing video this, Annie, did this with the brother in summer and the change from that day is stark - thank you for sharing, truly beautiful!
Thank you. It is such a great route in any season.
Awesome scenery and trip. Some of it reminds me of Australian conditions and the topography of some of our mountains. Curious as to how often in a Scottish winter you get conditions like this? Oneday I'd love to come over with my brother and explore your mountains in winter however I get the feeling that such conditions are rare. Jen and I are hoping to come over in April-May next year though and potentially do some whitewater packrafting and maybe some sea kayaking so I might PM you about any ideas you might have. Cheers
Hey Mark! In terms of snow cover, late January to mid march is the most reliable. Although within that it is always possible to get a big southerly storm that will give a full depth thaw. But you would have a good chance of getting reasonable snow somewhere, especially if you were happy to climb, hike or ski rather than just plan for one of those. In terms of such great weather... It wouldnt suprise me if that was the best three consequative days this winter.. Please give me a shout if you make it over next year!
Such a great video. That must of been dream like hiking on snowwy peaks under the moonlight!
Thanks! Yes, it was such a special experience. Im very grateful to have had the time to be out in such amazing weather. Wish we got more of it!
@@annieleoutside6044 I know! I live near snowdonia and our winters are even more transient! Blink and you miss it!

What a great surprise seeing a new video. Brilliant and day like that are few and far between.. thanks for sharing and hopefully more to come 😊
Thanks Andy. It wouldnt suprise me if these were some of the best days this winter... I hope im wrong though!
What a beautiful place! This looks just amazing my friend! Breathtaking mountain scenery 👏👏
It is an incredible place! Its just a shame weather days like these are far and few between. Today is raining on the summits and winds over 80mph
Great adventure and video!
Thanks so much :)
Great video Annie! You should submit this to some of the mountain film festivals :)
Aw Thanks Paul, thats very kind! :)
Wow! Wonderful place the Cairngorm Plateau in clear conditions as opposed to the hell in a storm!
Oh its so magnificent in clear conditions.
@ And no one else up there. 😳
This is wonderful. I’m pleased you could be there in such amazing conditions.
Thank you, yes, i felt incredibly lucky!
What a score! One of my favourite things, to be somewhere and yours are the only footprints. Magnificent!
Im the same! Although i was hoping to find a broken trail to descend Braeriach, im not beyond enjoying a bit of easier travel when im tired.
Beautiful! Thanks for the vid.
thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it :)
Good luck on AZT!
What was the offset on the Pike? - 51mm or 44mm. If the latter did it work OK? Was the 30/20 ratio too spinny for your Highland 550 event? Thanks for all the inspirational videos and instagram posts! Winter 550. Respect.
Where is your tent? Did i miss it?
curiosing the gear rasio ?
how is the floor of the mesh insert? Could you set up a compact camp chair in it? Do you cook in in as well? Contemplating the ½ insert, but would love the bug protection from where I use it. Thanks.
19/06/24 and TH-cam’s Alan Gorhythm has just suggested this to me…. What a fab video! Really enjoyed it, thank you.
Such an incredible looking area. Are or were you using Alpack Caribous rafts? You guys look to have a dialed in kit. My second watch as I just got into bikerafting
