You said it doubles as a hunting blind. Please and I repeat please do not shoot a high powered rifle from the cab. With the window hovering right over the gun the shock wave from the muzzle can spider you windshield. Its tempered so it wont go all over but it will break it. I did it in my can am :(
I thought about one of these for checking my irrigation wells and moving cattle, then I saw the price. I ended up with a very nice early 2000's chevy pickup for a fraction of the price that is much more comfortable and has greater payload and towing capability. Those look fun, but I'd rather buy an old jeep if all I cared about was offroad stuff.
As far as I can see there's hundreds of attenitives to buy which can do much the same job. At 35k that's a load of money for loads and load of cheap plastic. If your name is Bill Gates and you have money then since this is the machine for you. God you can buy a all singing and dancing pick up truck for the same money. You might even have enough money left over to paint it green and the wheels yellow. 🤔🤣
@@johnmclean4911 You get more from some Kubota RTVs including a front PTO to run a snow blower or brush as well as having a genuine HST instead of a CVT.
The downward-facing nozzle on the air filter is not the inlet. It is the outlet for the particle separator. In the J.D. Tractor manual, you are supposed to give it a squeeze periodically to open it to allow trapped grit to escape. The air enters from the backside and does a reverse direction inside the filter back to base and out a different pipe. You'll be fine!
If the entire head of the filter is clogged, then it's a problem. This isn't my complaint necessarily, but is a widely known complaint voiced by folks who have owned this Series. Otherwise, I wouldn't have brought it up. As several others commented in this video, JD introduced a filter mod kit to relocate and address this concern.
The air box design has been an issue literally since day 1. The very first machine our dealer sold (it was one of the first ones in the area as well) came back within a week due to customer complaint. It took well over a year of complaining to Deere's engineers before they finally decided to address the problem
We looked at a gator, Polaris ranger and kubota sidekick. Kubota had best towing, power, top speed and price at the time so we went with sidekick. Been great.
For 35k, I’d expect a decent audio system and more comfortable bucket outboard seats. Also, more exterior and interior LEDs with on many switches. Everyone loves more switches!
Audio systems, I won't go there. Highback Sport Seats are a $300 option from JD, LED lights can be added from JD or more cheaply as aftermarket units. I have aftermarket front & rear LEDs on my Gator & really find them useful. Switches can be found from $9.95 & up.
I bought a used diesel Gator a few years ago. Used it for one hunting trip and sold it because it was such a performance pig. I couldn’t follow the 835 gas Gators up steep, muddy hills because I couldn’t rev up enough RPM’s to make it all the way up.
I work for a john deere dealer and the newer 2021s have better shifting. Its all ganna be alot better. There are also alot of different attachments and accessories. They are neat.
Good to know I have a new 2022 865R coming this august and I am excited. It will replace an 850d (SAME ENGINE DIFFERENT GEARING?) the 850D is an excellent machine!
I purchased a 2019 835m with a gas motor and Boss V blade. It does not have the cab nor is it as loaded as yours but I bought it for $15,000 with a few hours on it. I find this little Gator to have more spunk than I was counting on. I really thought it would be a dog but was happily surprised. Careful if you put a hitch in the receiver and tilt your bed all the way up. IT WILL HIT AND DENT YOUR REAR TAIL GATE. Popped back but left a little distress mark on the gate:( Lastly mine runs at a top speed of 45mph. The governor keeps it from going any faster and frankly that is fast enough for me. This is my first UTV and I absolutely love it. I do agree that the transmission engagement lever is not always very friendly to engage. At this point I have 140 hours on it and it has been problem free. All the best! Jeff
Agree with you on battery access being poor, not great if you ever have to replace it. However, they do provide some auxiliary points for charging and jumping. Hope to see a long term review, thanks!
We use 2 -4 seaters on our Ranch. I have nothing but green here for all our heavy equipment, so after checking around, JD is the only side x side company that has a cattle protection rail for the unit which we need. So thinking these are built as well as the tractor line was my first mistake, SAVE YOUR MONEY, ours see daily use, both out in the field and in our garage, I spend more time and money fixing them than we do running them. Oh yeah, if you think the purchase price is high, wait till you have to start buying and fixing. Buy a truck it's cheaper. I can go to the nearest town and buy a NEW truck for the same price and it will last years more.
@@wendyhancock6856 Really? Were they installing it after they put all of the panels in? This seems stupid if it's being ordered from a factory. Also, if it's $1k to put one in, it better be a Kenwood, Pioneer or Yamaha then.
I tested a new gas gator. I thought it was very sluggish in response and slow. Heater wouldn’t even warm the cab up and shifter was damn near pre historic. I’m a JD fan, own several tractors but ran from this purchase. We with CanAm defender with cab for almost 8K less. Never looked back
I'll stick with my used Kubota RTV900 bought at auction for $2,100 over a JD with stamped steel C channel frame and lots of plastic. The Kubota is made for WORK, your John Deere is made for play.
@@sarahann530 Mainly location. My high bid was $1000 under the 'winning' bidder. When he learned he'd have to travel 214 miles to pick it up he backed out and I was happy to go and pick it up. Been running like a champ and has had proper maintenance. I've never owned a JD so I can't make a direct comparison. Like Ford v. Chevy - to each their own!
@@sarahann530 Guess the high bidder didn't know about uBid or have the capability of picking it up. I used to be a huge JD fan until I saw the plight of farmers who can no longer fix their own equipment because JD won't release the software diagnostics - kinda soured me on them since I figured them to be the per-eminent American company from my youth. Anyhoo, the RTV900 is working great for me but good to see what King Green is offering too - may the best UTV win lol
From an economic perspective, I would rather buy a nice used 4x4 pickup that is street legal, than blow 35k on a utv. But of course if you are rich..... then it doesn’t matter.
I was thinking, a jeep, price almost the same and its a real vehicle, that will offroad as well. The only thing you would be missing is the dump body. A short bodied 4x4 truck could maybe have a dump body??. It's a lot of expense, for a limited use.
In my home state of Wisconsin, you can not drive a street legal truck on a ATV trail, you can not take a JEEP on a ATV trail. You can not even take a Mahindra on a ATV trail. However, your can take a ATV, and this includes side-by-sides, on ATV trails. In my home county, Door County, you can drive your ATV on all county roads.
That is a good point. But there is still an edge to such a smaller vehicle. Very tight turning radius is one and reduced weight for running over soft terrain is another. Versatility is the key. But the high-end version at 35k is mind-blowing. I would not afford to drive this much money in a mud pit!
FYI: the diesel engine has the same muffler/spark arrestor as the gas engine. It WILL get plugged with carbon particulate. When the power drops off first thing is to clean the muffler/spark arrestor. How to do that is all over the place. Solution is to gut the innards but who wants to do that on a low hour expensive unit. Could be an aftermarket direct bolt on replacement for it but I haven't looked. When the power drops off you're going to first think the CVT is going out. Trust me it will be a fouled/plugged muffler/spark arrestor.
I have the XUV835M which is basically the same machine minus some bells and whistles, I absolutely love it, use it every day on our farm, my tailgate does not move at all, very solid, I have 300 hours and not one problem
Holy cow…this thing was more expensive than my new 2025r with loader/bucket, mower deck with load n go,, iMatch, ballast box, rear blade, front mount snowblower, and land plane?
Can you comment on two questions: 1). Do you have any problems with engine heat penetrating the cab since the engine is virtually below you? 2) Noise level with full cab?
As far as your concern about the gear selector while plowing there is actually an easy solution for that. Not sure if you knew this but the “John Deere” branded plow on your gator is actually designed from fisher plows made up here in Maine. I’ve plowed snow commercially for 10+ years and my first setup had the same plow control joystick as your gator and you are right it is a pain in the rear end having to steer, shift, and control plow with that setup. But I then got the handheld controller that is called the fish stick (fisher plows product name) with this style controller you can put your hand anywhere that’s comfortable while plowing including the shifter and be able to push the buttons to move the plow at the same time as shifting. Makes it a lot easier and smoother. Also the more you use this hand held controller the easier it will become because you will find a way to hold it that works best for you and have the muscle memory to push whatever button you need without even looking at your controller. Like I said above even though your plow is branded as John Deere they actually copied everything about it from fishers trailblazer UTV plows. So if John Deere doesn’t offer the hand held controller then find your closest fisher plows dealer or just order online. As long as they have the matching electrical plug connectors they will work.
My neighbor bought a new 835m Gator last year (2019) he showed me the dealer invoice. Had over $4,000 in options, everything except the cab (he didn't want a cab).Got it for $17,000, when deere had some incentives going on. He loves that machine.
The diesel version is not going to have the higher end take off like gas but also your riding around with your plow on. I would take the plow off for tooling around. Excessive wear and tear. Plus it will help with performance.
I was seriously considering buying a JD Gator until finding out the downfalls of the machine. I think the worst is the battery location and top speed for me. Otherwise I think it’s a decent machine with some great options.
Ouch. $35k? Wow and I was choking on $19k for a Polaris Ranger side by side. Similar but different in many ways I know but holy cow. Looks like a nice machine though especially the cab. I appreciate the honesty as usual!!
I have had 5 different kinds of side by sides on the farm. 2 ki mules a ya rino and 2 gators a 850 diesel (25 hp) & a 825i (50hp) you want to see the gas 825i show them up put a trailer on them, the 50hp gas will out do all by a bunch. I think it is now the 835M or the R.
I have an older 850D which I love. Roof but no cab or windshield. I bought it with 700 hours for $8,000. I had been looking for a diesel because I have a diesel tank at home. Diesel tractor and zero turn. It’s currently at the dealer for annual service and to get a winch installed. Road speed of about 30 mph is fine with me. I mostly drive in a field or woods. Great low end torque. I pull logs out of brush or swamp occasionally so the winch will be handy.
This is a great video; nicely done. I've been considering a Gator but have recently been leaning towards a Honda Pioneer 700, after hearing of numerous and varying complaints about the Deere SxSs. I've had John Deere tractors/ products in the past and have never had issues; Deere has remained incredibly reliable on those fronts. However, from what I've learned through research is that the Deere SxSs seem to have a lot of common mechanical oriented issues experienced amongst owners. Also, the Honda that I've been considering allows for a smaller and lighter in weight unit while still having the integrity and build quality as well as retaining the higher payload and cargo carry capacity. I'm still on the fence and really want to justify the Gator.
A Conneely The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado HD has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $34,700 for a base 2500 model with regular cab, plus a $1,595 destination charge. The one-ton 3500 model begins slightly higher, at $35,000. Google is free
If your air filter plugs up this summer, john deere has a PIP change where the air gets sucked in take about half hour to install. I have had to install 2 of the on gators. I work in the lawn and garden department at a john deere dealership
Well the 3 cyl gas motor with 54 HP does 45 mph. While diesel with 22 hp does only 32 mph. But I am sure if all things being equal the diesel would have more low-end torque. But a CVT will always rob low-end torque. This Gator needs a sequential shift manual.
Soooo the battery in under the bed, so if the battery is dead, and the bed is down (as it normally would be) that's rather like locking the key in the car, isn't it?
35 grand you couldhad a 65 HP Kabota with full cab with heat and air with full snowblower and front end loader. plus use to do farm work. this like a kids power wheels they just dont llook like a utility vehicle
JD tech here, on the battery situation, I agree it is inconvenient, however, all you have to do is take that side panel off. It's just a couple of torx screws and a couple plastic push pins.
Also, the gas version is WAYYYY more "peppy" and can reach about 45 MPH top speed. Both gas and diesel versions are work horses when it comes to climbing hills.
Torx screws? Really? Why not just standard hex head screws or bolts? Where the battery is those torx screws will corrode and you will ultimately end up taking the machine half apart just to drill them out. Not surprising there are disposable push pins as well. Are they a proprietary size as well like most of Deere's line? Do you sell them for a 150% markup like the rest of Deere's line? The whole thing is made of Deere's PlastiCrapTM panels anyway. At least when you buy a Kubota, the thing will keep going after decades of use. I deal with a Deere dealer, but it's only because it sells Honda.
Be nice to make up jumper cables to plug in where winch does so you don't have to get to that battery! I would definitely wire it up for a trickle charger maintainer too!
I'm going to go ahead and throw my 2 cents in. I bought a new 835m (gas) hvac the week before Christmas and it replaced my 590m gator i had. I have put almost 400 miles on it and it's a good machine. It is a cross over and you can hit the trails with it but this machine was designed to be a work horse. I use this machine on my farm and for my property management business. The low end pulling power is very impressive and speed is good. This will not replace a tractor by no means but makes a good support vehicle and one heck of a deer stand. I was kinda worried about the cheri engine that this machine uses (It's Chinese) But so far has performed well. My only con with this vechicle is it uses a lot of rpms to move and stays around the 4,500 range under light loads. Best i can tell is max rpms is 6000 to 6500, so basicly you are running the engine fast all the time and in my pea brain thinking will wear out faster. I would love to see a lower speed clutch, are at least give me the option to adjust. Over all i love this machine and so far has served me well. The price is what you expect to pay for something with a cab and air, just my 2 cents.
Bought a 2015 HPX Gator as a demo in 2016 it is gas with a top speed of 25 mph added a Curtis all steel cab(mounts over Deeres roll cage never had to drill a hole to install cab) doors are lift off with sliding glass windows ...rear windows are same . Front windshield opens on gas cylinders with two open vent settings 12 volt wiper standard equipment came in under 20,000.00 Gator also has electric box lift and the air cleaner and battery are under the seat
I bought a new gas 835r with all the lights and winch including a radio for 27k. My gas model has 54 hp. Great pep. Of course you could always use more. Ran 47 mph top speed.
Own an 835R model with almost 10,000 miles, best thing I ever bought. You are way too critical of an excellent machine. The only complaint I have with mine is plowing snow and backing up the 4wd doesn't engage until it sees 3 mph wheel spin. Maybe try gas model 45 mph and for as heavy as it is goes plenty good.
Almost 20K kilometres on my 855D and completely agree, never needed any major repairs and we absolutely beat the bricks off it. This kind of review from captain subdivision is hilarious and completely misleading. Guys like this just talk to hear themselves talk and literally make no real world assessment of the thing they claim to be reviewing.
@@edwardwood6532 Our town parks department has one, more or less it's used for fairly light duty stuff. It also sounds like a chainsaw when it's running around which I find odd. The town has a variety of equipment and the most expensive of it is a pair of Trackless MT tractors used for plowing the sidewalks in the winter and grinding down uneven sections of said sidewalks. They have other attachments on them but mostly winter sidewalk maintenance. I think our town was out of its mind when it bought a brand new Deere tractor instead of sticking with Kubota or New Holland. Although, it does have a large Deere front end loader for plowing the smaller streets in the winter (I find this weird since it's bigger than the plow trucks and has no salter, turning the neighbourhood streets into ice hazards) The other thing the loader is used for is loading yard waste into a tractor-trailer in the warm seasons. I think we all need to start reconsidering Japanese machines like Hitachi, Kubota and Komatsu as they value having things made in the countries in which they are sold. Deere and Cat basically said, "We're too greedy to pay the wages of workers beneath us so we are moving to Mexico."
I work at a JD dealer in west Texas. We also had a lot of issues with the air filter box location. Out here in the dust the air filters would clog up within a week. We ended up fabricating a snorkel that reroutes the air suction to under the green top. Per our sales guy, Deere is releasing a factory snorkel kit sometime this year
I’m sitting in my house waiting for the 16-22” of snow to get here. We have about 8” on the ground now. I have a 835hvac with a electric over hydraulic straight plow in it and a Kubota 2320TLB. When it comes to plowing snow IMHO it’s like this. Plowing snow with the Gator is probably the hardest thing I can do with it, and plowing snow with the Kubota is probably the easiest thing I do with it. And that’s EXACTLY how it feels when you’re using them to plow snow.
I have the same thing and I love it bought it the first year they came out with them because of the cab with heat and air mine is also a diesel I didn't get it for trail riding it's a work vehicle I to put the cab lights on I did put a back window garden on to keep from braking it we've pulled alot of trees stuck vehicles and other stuff its perfect for my needs best of all dad can plow the driveway and not get cold he is 83 so to me it means a lot over all 35000 dollars is a lot but it one of my best investments yet in my eyes
I've enjoyed all your videos. You just knew the grief you were going to get with a $35k price tag. Thanks for taking the risk and re-enforcing my belief that there is no job or circumstance I would ever have to need one of these units on my property.
Good video. I am in the market for another XUV. I have owned a 855D diesel Gator for 11 years. For the most part, it had been a good vehicle, with the exception of the electric power steering constantly throwing a fault since it was new (which the dealer can't figure out) and having to replace the centrifugal clutch drive. But I see, not a whole lot has changed in 11 years on the diesel models, except over doubling of the price. Same tailgate, same clutch, same steering, etc. I am now seriously looking at the Kubota RTV-X1100C. The diesel has more HP, it's drive system is hydrostatic, the dump bed is fast hydraulic as well as the steering is hydraulic. The cab is air tight with metal doors. The top speed for the Kubota won't be as fast as the Gator, but I am not buying it for speed. The best part about it? The price tag for the Kubota is almost $9k cheaper than the Gator. Keep putting out great videos like this one. I just subscribed to your channel.
Thanks for the review. We have a 825i we maxed out with everything off of ebay and saved a ton of money. It's governed at 42 MPH. We looked at the 865R but for that amount of money, I'll by another Jeep. Thanks again for your video. :)
Very nice review! We recently purchased the Kubota 1100c and we absolutely love it! Doesn't go as fast as your unit but is 100% hydrostatic...no belt/cvt. As you buying property....I'd rather have a skid steer than a UTV....MUCH more useful. We bought and built 5 years ago and put hundreds of hours on the skid steer...it saved us probably 60k and only cost 25k, so it owes us nothing and does everything the UTV does infinitely better....except....transportation. Best of luck and thx for a great review!
Thanks for sharing! Yeah, I've got tractors, skid steer, trucks, now a UTV. I figured I had to try a UTV at some point! We'll see what happens in the long run.
The gator works great where a truck isn't a good option. We have two older models at a school and comes in handy all around the property. If I had a farm, for work or hunting I would want one. Ours gets used every day, even in the winter with a blade for plowing walks, playgounds, etc. The top speed is fast enough for off road, it is quick and nimble for property use over a few acres.
Courtney I had a Artic Cat Prowler 650 with the full heated cab and plow ,It did a great job .Here was the bad, it was horribly loud and it was one of the years that had bad cams so the motor ate itself up ! A/C would not help at all ...
Lot of money for a UTV very much a specialized purchase. Battery location is sketchy for sure I’d just fab a remote jump post so jump starting is easier.
Nice honest video. I have a 2021 865M with the same plow. There is a learning curve when it comes to that plow. But I too have to say installing that plow is not easy and I know what I'm doing. After a couple years of use EVERYTHING SHIFT'S and it's almost impossible to install the plow.
I noticed that plow is made by fisher for John deere. Do yourself a favor and dump that joystick and get yourself a handheld fishstick controller. It is a game changer. You will be able to run that plow much better!
Batteries on the JD tractors - UGH! I have a 2017 1025R with only about 110 hours on it and had to replace the batter a couple of months ago. What a hassle! I couldn't do it with a bad arm / shoulder - the angles and weight of that battery were too much. I had to have a service tech come out. He had to take out a headlight - the full assembly, not just the bulb - detach the battery, angle it up on it's side and still barely slide it up past the bolts that hold the headlight assembly in place. Absolutely ridiculous. Nice Gator rig, though. I wouldn't have a use for it personally but it looks like a lot of fun.
Those compact tractors have ample room under the hood and Kubota still knows how to design better than Deere/Yanmar or Chrysler with its Intrepid? I mean, shoehorning a battery into that car by removing the front right wheel seems stupid. This is ridiculous.
A Gator definitely makes sense for some, for me a snowmobile for ice fishing and the deep snow we get upnorth has more utility, and when the snow melts I really like using the tractors. I rarely need to leave the property with a tractor and the speed of the UTV does not justify using a UTV over a tractor. Lastly, my better half would probably make me sell a tractor if I wanted a UTV, and that would be unbearable ;)
I've owned a 2018 Polaris RZR Turbo Dynamix and a 2019 Can-Am X3 RC Turbo R and after having each for a while I realized the absolute ridiculous nature of such machines when comparing how they are made with something like a Subaru WRX or any modern vehicle. Next time I need a UTV its going to be a used POS farm rig that I can beat into the ground and not feel bad about it.
Great video, I could see a dead battery really being a problem. Especially when you need to raise the bed to fully access battery… I have a 825i I picked up for around the house and commercial snow accounts and to check the oils you have to raise the bed …. You shouldn’t have to raise the dump body to check the fluids…luckily on mine the air filter is inside the cab and along with the battery… the fuel fill is too… not so happy about that . I bought the 2017 to get my feet wet before I pull the trigger on a new one to make sure I’m making the right move . $40k new!!outfitted with what I need
We love our Polaris Ranger. The deere was not an option as we use it recreational as well on our farm but for recreational there just is not enough ground clearance and air filters and a lot of other things. As far as the CVT you could always add a clutch kit to get you more off the line speed and top end. Lots of people make the after market clutches and they are easy to install . The plow hurts the speed a bit as well I'm sure.
The new 2021 has and different transmission with an integrated park. it also has an electronic switch for Diff lock and an upgraded display screen. There is also an elevated air intake that draws air from the top of the cab. They also upgraded the Power steering to a heavier duty unit.
I thought a Gator was a tractor accessary. You know, support vehicle. Just off the top of my head, I don't think the diesel Gator has a blower (turbo for gas engines). If it did that would be a world of difference. Its definitely the Cadillac of UTVs. But for $35k it should. I love Deere, but not that much.
I looked at the Gator seriously and ended up going with a new CanAm Defender XT Cab / HD10. My favorite part about the Gator was, in fact, the quiet cab. However, I plow snow and felt that the CanAm was a better way to go long term. Loved the Gator, but I saved $7000. I expect to destroy the machine eventually..!
I wish I got the Ranger Northstar over the RZR PRO xp 🤷♂️ Once I pay off the RZR I'm looking for a Ranger or maybe the can am version. Definitely want AC for summer
@@kwmiked Ranger Northstar is a very nice machine. And, I think Polaris has gotten a lot better with their service. By contrast, CanAm service is hit and miss - you have to rely pretty heavily on user groups and aftermarket support. The CanAm has been pretty reliable though.
I’ve been looking at side by sides for years and they have come a long way as far as performance and creature comforts, but the main thing that keeps me from buying one is the price tag. I can’t justify spending $35,000 on a side by side when I can buy a good used Toyota Tacoma 4x4 low mileage truck for example that can do everything that a side by side can do minus the tilt bed for far less then $35,000.
Yes Tacoma’s are amazing. If you want a ITV I would recommend a Honda pioneer. We have over 1000 miles and not a single issue. We also have a can am defender 6x6 which also has been great. We have had 2 Polaris and both were junk
I have had a pair of Honda 1000-5 loved them for big family trail rides that sort of thing. Now I have my own land and own a pair of diesel gators. I have the 865M setup with a lot of the same options as yours except I don’t have doors or climate control. I also have a 4 seat 855M . I did the diesels for the same reasons you stated . I have diesel fuel on site for all my green tractors , so I wanted keep everything using one type of fuel. I do like my diesel gators, but if buying a gas powered machine again , I would look at the Honda 1000-5 awesome machines , or if needing a cab Polaris and Can-am have some really nice cab machines .
@@GoodWorksTractors If considering a CAB model gas next time, I would check out the Can-am Defender limited. It seems like the top dog in cab utility rigs right now. Even has power windows and some sort of special super AC system. It really looks like an impressive machine. For Diesel cab machines, I would stick with Deere. My dad has cab Kabota, that is one crude machine. Hate the interior layout in the Kabota cab utes.
Video content idea: Would love to see a video of you showing your viewers the difference between, 2WD, 4WD and 4WD with differential engaged. Perhaps ascending a step hill or some other form of test. It also would be nice to see you showing you viewers how to get your tractor unstuck using your front loader. I have talked with more than one tractor owner that did not realize the front loader is your best friend if you get stuck. Drone footage would be super cool too. Enjoy the channel and look forward to your future content.
Thanks I enjoyed the video. Fortunately I live in Tampa Bay Area of Florida so snow and cold is not an issue. I use my Gator every day on my property here (3 acres) and just love it. The only regret was not getting it with a hydraulic dump bed but that was cured with $900.00
John Deere should make a Crocodile; big brother to the Gator. So, the "Croc" would be hydraulic with a minimum of 50 diesel horse power. Immediate attachments that come to mind: snowblower, blade/plow, bucket, grapple, sweeper to name just a few. John Deere has had plenty of time to expand their UTV offerings, and haven't, why? Doesn't Bobcat have 2 different versions; a 25 HP & a 50 hp? I've heard the later is a $50,000.00 machine, but it can handle all of attachments I just suggested for the "Croc". I have an X595 with a blower, blade, triple bag catcher & I think a 54' mower deck, spreader, 1500 cart. I like the Gator; I keep waiting for the snowblower attachment to come out; year after year? This is what brings me to Croc. Sitting on the X595, year after year in 10 - 15° temps is starting to get old after awhile. I'm a green & yellow guy too. This is why I just can't do the Bobcat thing; ,,,,,,,🤔 or can I 🤗 ⏲️ ⏲️ ⏲️ ⏲️ 😎?
Do a follow up on the gater really thinking about buying one for calfing cause the seats look better we have a Kubota rn I just hate how bad the leg room and the seats kill your back
We have a gas 625i and it’s diesel counterpart. The diesel is a lot slower on acceleration and top and speed however it will drag just about anything and you barely notice it where the gas one struggles with heavy loads
Not just the Gator, but every diesel ATV/UTV/SXS I've tested are far too loud. Why do they all have to sound like they have pennies bouncing around inside the cylinders? Our Ranger 1000XP is loud, but the diesel Kubota we test drove before it was obnoxiously loud. Headache inducing loud.
Wished you had lifted the hood to show what is under it. In 2018 I bought a brand new Kubota RTV with cab /heat /AC for $18,200. Mind you I didn’t get plow or winch at that price. It serves my needs well on my 70.5 acres. Kubota Diesel engine is bulletproof and I never would have considered a gasoline model. Gear selector is a bit clunky, but gets easier with time and practice. You learn to jockey the shifter a bit like you might do on an old tractor to learn the sweet spots where shifter easily drops into gear without any fight or resistance. I’m small and the interior seating position and pedals and tilt steering are perfect for me. My much taller and larger neighbor is not comfortable behind the wheel of mine. I have zero tailgate open /close /latching issues and my battery is 100% easily accessible, as is the washer fluid tank and multiple radiators. I opted for no radio or turn signals which would have been several hundred additional. Shortly after getting it I wished I had gotten turn signals for safety when I get out on the road (2 lane state highway) in front of my farm. I like the lights on yours. I need to add rear aimed lights for backing up and general lighting for the rare times I’m actually out in it after dark. My engine oil filter is very difficult to access. Maybe it’ll get easier with practice. Nice video and love your dog. Thank you. I’m in the market for a brand new or very slightly used 75 HP 4WD John Deere cab tractor to replace my 1996 John Deere 5300 open station tractor. It’s gently used and stored inside with only 1800 hours on it thus far. I’m in southern Pennsylvania.
Yeah, we filmed under the hood, then forgot to put it in the video. No storage, all mechanical and electrical. I'm still improving with the shifter. Still clunky, but not as bad. Good info for comparison. Thanks for watching!
I own the 2012. John Deere 825 I . We have power steering newer version . Hydraulic electric lift / windshield with roll bar roof and guard rail kit . Bench seat also Removable winter cab by mammoth . . Camoplast tracks for the winter . Very stable on hills . Shifts really nice and tons of power being liquid cooled gas engine . Always used synthetic oil and service it once a year . Still has original belt .I think Side by sides are out of control now with way too much unneeded gimmicks and gadgets . Just like atvs too big and bulky now . The 825 I have has been bullet proof and is a all round work horse and nice simple trail machine for cruising . The prices have gone thru the roof and they are over loaded with too much stuff now and hard too service .Wont be trading or selling mine anytime soon . Can’t replace it . 🤷♂️
I haven't owned a gator but I have had a 700 rhino that I was ok with until a bearing noise showed up in the trans. That the dealer said they couldn't hear. And this was less the a year old at a year and two months I was on a long ride and it got bad fast when I took it back in they could hear for sure it hurt your ears it was so load. A friend had the 850 gas that they brought in and I road it around a little. It was enough I always said if I was going to buy another side by side is was going to be a gater. My uncle had a attic cat and ling story short he had problems but but how has a gater. Now I know all will have some issues but the gaters seem to only have typical ones. Brakes, wheel bearing, ext. But after this video I'm liking the heat and ac cab. I will go with the gas one do to the fact of the benifit ride we go on. The ac will be nice so we don't breath so much dust. Be the most I'd use it but the heat I would use more for the plowing show checking fence feeding cows. So this gater is one I'll look at the hardest.
I dont know how similar it is to my 590M, but it looks just like it, it has gas, its hard to shift too, ive almost got it stuck in park a few times. The gas engine in mines not the peppy, ive had it to 35, but that was rough, mine dosent have a windshield or anything, its bare bones
I have the 835R gas and have had it for two years. It will run 45 mph and actually haven't noticed much different top speed when loaded. I will say the shifter and transmission are poor. Deere finally caught up with the competition and got the shifter up off the floor but it just feels weak and "janky" to me. We have had MANY Gators since the very first front single wheel models and used them for many years with my hunting business. I've had every model they sell and this is by far the Cadillac, however, it's out costs the competition as well. The parking brake location and transmission shift is new in the 2021 model and I will probably trade if it seems to be noticeable better. I will say, they are very solid machine and I have had them in every situation and tested them beyond what John Deere would probably recommend both in hauling capacity and terrain. They hold up and stand up to whatever you dish out.
We have the 865M model for a little over a year now. 170hrs on it. Full size truck vs Gator isn’t the best comparison. The best explanation for this is driving the unit around the property for small chores. Moving firewood, moving hay for the animals, taking the trash the half mile to the end of the driveway. My wife can back this up without jackknifing it. She is the smartest woman I know, but she can’t back up a trailer to save her life. This unit is fun to drive, aggressive tires go anywhere and 11gal diesel tank is massive. We wish we purchased it earlier. Enjoy what it does well. No radio wanted on our unit either. The music of that Diesel is fine for my ears!!! Nice content in your channel. I enjoy watching.👍🏻
Nicely done. I was in the market recently, considered the gas version. Couldn't make myself pay that much. Went with a different manufacturer, saved a lot of $$$. Hoping it doesn't come back to bite me!
I went to the Ford site and built a 2021 F150 NEW 4x4, added nicer wheels, all power options, larger fuel tank, trailer hookup, 8 foot box, $36,855 no discounts.... and you bought a little green toad used that the tailgate does not even fit for how much?
We have the Kubota rtc 1100 , yes on the transmission slow to shift , hard to get use to . Blade is ok 6 way also , a tractor is a much better way to go , but will only seat one person
Deere has changed the shift linkage design in the 2021 models to attempt to make a fix for that shifting problem, in the 2021 models the parking brake is not on the floor any more it is integrated into the shift lever, this is on all XUV models, from what I noticed so far they do shift better
If you don’t like the way Gator shifts you will really hate a Kubota RTV, it’s terrible for pushing snow. I can’t figure out why Kubota didn’t just reverse it hydroelectric motor for reverse, you have to change the gears to reverse, and if you are up against a pile of snow you have just pushed up it won’t come out of forward till you hold the brake a while, some time you can raise the bald and shift.

You said it doubles as a hunting blind. Please and I repeat please do not shoot a high powered rifle from the cab. With the window hovering right over the gun the shock wave from the muzzle can spider you windshield. Its tempered so it wont go all over but it will break it. I did it in my can am :(
You should be able to make the diesel one faster by tweaking it. We had a guy any the John Deere store do it.
I tend to be quite sarcastic. Some appreciate that, some don't.
I don’t get the pricing on these things can someone from John Deere explain why they cost more than a Subaru Impreza Sedan
Just because it says John Deere on it . Do you know why they are painted green...... so when they die in the field they blend in
That green paint is worth 17K at least.
It’s not even paint. It’s plastic.
@@joegilly1523 , they grind up $100 bills to make the green paint as told to me by a dealer for another brand.
@@johnbereza7782 😂 😂
I thought about one of these for checking my irrigation wells and moving cattle, then I saw the price. I ended up with a very nice early 2000's chevy pickup for a fraction of the price that is much more comfortable and has greater payload and towing capability. Those look fun, but I'd rather buy an old jeep if all I cared about was offroad stuff.
Good choice!
Your exactly right
If the entire head of the filter is clogged, then it's a problem.
KEEP an eye on the airfilter!!! It WILL plug with dust QUICKLY!! Ask me how I KNOW.
We looked at a gator, Polaris ranger and kubota sidekick. Kubota had best towing, power, top speed and price at the time so we went with sidekick. Been great.
Serious question: why would you want this over an old jeep or compact truck?
I saw a used TJ for 16k the other day. Less than half of the UTVs
near the water tank for the windshield are the battery charging points when she dies.
That's what you get for letting an Engineer design this, instead of a Mechanic.
Nice Review, thanks for sharing.
I suddenly don’t feel so bad about spending $12k purchasing my 25hp tractor w loader.
Whoa. Where can I get a deal like that?
For 35k, I’d expect a decent audio system and more comfortable bucket outboard seats. Also, more exterior and interior LEDs with on many switches. Everyone loves more switches!
Yeah, at least the audio system!! This is the workhorse model though, so bucket seats are really found in the sport models.
Jeff
Yeah, if you watch when I open the dump bed, you can see the tailgate hit the winch. Goofy design flaw.
35k and a $100 radio is not included, amazing!
No kidding.
Radio was over $1,000 to have installed & I special ordered mine, so I declined to do a radio!
@@wendyhancock6856 Really? Were they installing it after they put all of the panels in? This seems stupid if it's being ordered from a factory. Also, if it's $1k to put one in, it better be a Kenwood, Pioneer or Yamaha then.
Your comment made me think of the issue I have with my 1025r. Shifting from L to H seems more difficult than it should be.
Try tapping the forward and reverse pedals and it should make it easier
Agreed, I had the same 'problem'/ experience with mine.
Thanks for stopping by!
I have the 855d and it will out work a junk kubota any day my friend had one for about a week and sold it

What do those Mahindra Jeep things go for ??
@@DougAlesUSA Wisconsin is weird. We can drive ATVs down the road but Japanese mini trucks aren’t legal 🙄🤷🏼♂️
$30K, I think I'll mod my Tacoma to handle front end attachments
Thanks for showing your gator and the thoughtful review. The 35000 dollar price tag is just not justifiable for the machine's capability.
Keep in mind, nearly $10,000 of that was plow and salter. Knock off thousands more if you don't want an HVAC cab.
@@GoodWorksTractors that certainly does make a difference .
Will try to remember that info!
Kubota diesel side by sides have the same issue. I still love the diesel!!
Good explanation of the Pros & Cons that you found. While I am not in the market for a Gator, I occasionally have thought about it. Good job
Thanks for watching!
I have an 835 gas version. Great vehicle in every respect. No complaints. You did a good review. Power windows would have been nice.
My neighbor bought a new 835m Gator last year (2019) he showed me the dealer invoice. Had over $4,000 in options, everything except the cab (he didn't want a cab).Got it for $17,000, when deere had some incentives going on. He loves that machine.
Yeah, several big price differences. Gas vs diesel, M vs R Series, open station vs HVAC cab. Those will drive the price up quick.
The diesel version is not going to have the higher end take off like gas but also your riding around with your plow on. I would take the plow off for tooling around. Excessive wear and tear. Plus it will help with performance.
If you only knew what was involved to install and remove this plow. That's not a viable option. th-cam.com/video/EbHvBwYCR4U/w-d-xo.html
I was seriously considering buying a JD Gator until finding out the downfalls of the machine. I think the worst is the battery location and top speed for me. Otherwise I think it’s a decent machine with some great options.
Thanks for watching!
Ouch. $35k? Wow and I was choking on $19k for a Polaris Ranger side by side. Similar but different in many ways I know but holy cow. Looks like a nice machine though especially the cab. I appreciate the honesty as usual!!
Haha, yeah stinking pricey!
I'm still on the fence and really want to justify the Gator.
i don't know the market or the prices in usa but isn't a truck cheaper with a bigger engine and bigger tires?...
Yeah probably
In the usa here you can a baseline brand new chevy 6.6 duramax for 35 k

There's a lot of things you could buy with 35k.
Yeah, would be nice!
Good info, I appreciate you taking the time.
Trick to shifting a CVT trans is you have to take your foot off the gas to get it to shift. I've seen people break shifters off trying to force them.
I bought a new gas 835r with all the lights and winch including a radio for 27k. My gas model has 54 hp. Great pep. Of course you could always use more. Ran 47 mph top speed.
The Clear ans honest objectivity is appreciated
Thank you!

Holy cow bud, could have got a 4R or 10 geo trackers with plows.
Gator have gone from a good farm workhouse, to a urban fluff toy.
That's what I was going for...urban fluff toy.
@@GoodWorksTractors I have to ask, what do you consider "urban"? I have literally only seen these in really small towns.
Per our sales guy, Deere is releasing a factory snorkel kit sometime this year
Good info, thank you sir.
Nice piece of equipment. Hard to justify the cost of that for most of us.
Somebody is buying them all. They can't keep them in stock.
@@GoodWorksTractors farms trying to reduce taxes? Could definitely see the appeal for farmers and hunters for those.
Courtney I had a Artic Cat Prowler 650 with the full heated cab and plow ,It did a great job .Here was the bad, it was horribly loud and it was one of the years that had bad cams so the motor ate itself up ! A/C would not help at all ...
Sorry to hear that Jimmy
Lot of money for a UTV very much a specialized purchase. Battery location is sketchy for sure I’d just fab a remote jump post
so jump starting is easier.
No doubt about it, thanks for stopping by!
Nice honest video. I have a 2021 865M with the same plow. There is a learning curve when it comes to that plow. But I too have to say installing that plow is not easy and I know what I'm doing. After a couple years of use EVERYTHING SHIFT'S and it's almost impossible to install the plow.
Looked at a gator. Got sooooo much more going with a Polaris Ranger... and it was cheaper!
I have one it’s actually a piece of junk
On the tail gate shim the pivot points to keep it centered.
Yeah, one of the great mysteries of the world for sure
Lol, I understand!
Where did you get the seat covers? I just bought a 835m, love it so far.
Good to know, thanks!
Yeah, pricey one no doubt. I'm happy to do the testing for you guys. Part of the job :)
Thanks for watching!
I really liked the Honda Pioneer. I wanted the HVAC though.
Yeah, would have to find a good way to compare
Thanks I enjoyed the video. Fortunately I live in Tampa Bay Area of Florida so snow and cold is not an issue. I use my Gator every day on my property here (3 acres) and just love it. The only regret was not getting it with a hydraulic dump bed but that was cured with $900.00
Do love that power dump.
😂😂
Nice video. I have a 2019 835M. Fantastic machine! Olive drab and black color. Have added a few accessories. Use mine everyday.
Thanks for watching!
We have a older 2x2 gator that has been a work horse on our farm . Would love to buy a new fully loaded one someday.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Tim!
Loved this video , I would like to see a comparison with Kubota RTV X1100.
Not sure it'll happen, but would be cool
Thanks for sharing Stephen
I just still don't get side by sides. For everything but the tightest wooded trails, I'd rather just have an old shortbed or bronco with locked diffs.
Good info, I appreciate you taking the time!
Glad to hear it, thanks for sharing!
P.S.We always put a special dust kit on it---helps ALOT!!
Nicely done. I was in the market recently, considered the gas version. Couldn't make myself pay that much. Went with a different manufacturer, saved a lot of $$$. Hoping it doesn't come back to bite me!
Yeah, we'll see. Verdict is still out for me. I do want to give it more time. Had a lot of folks asking my opinion of what I thought so far.
I went to the Ford site and built a 2021 F150 NEW 4x4, added nicer wheels, all power options, larger fuel tank, trailer hookup, 8 foot box, $36,855 no discounts.... and you bought a little green toad used that the tailgate does not even fit for how much?
Oh, I thought I mentioned how much I paid....I don't remember now.
Thanks for the update. Hope I get to see a new model soon.
i think the compression ignition of the diesel would make it more reliable and less trouble than a gas engine.
Would think so
If you don’t like the way Gator shifts you will really hate a Kubota RTV, it’s terrible for pushing snow. I can’t figure out why Kubota didn’t just reverse it hydroelectric motor for reverse, you have to change the gears to reverse, and if you are up against a pile of snow you have just pushed up it won’t come out of forward till you hold the brake a while, some time you can raise the bald and shift.
