I just acquired my grandpa's old 142 I don't know how to many years it's sat it's sat in his den my whole childhood happy to be keeping the love for it alive
When I buy from fleebay I go into the deal with a radios not going to work attitude. I just brace myself for the worst. If the radio works then cool deal. I look for many things / red flags, but mostly I look for stock radios in good cosmetic condition. Then hope for the best. Oh well, its what keeps this sport exciting. Thank you for subscribing and Merry Christmas.
Just got mine off the shelf plugged it back in Love This old radio... You're the reason I bought a Cobra 2000 last year. Glad I bought it when I did now the price has doubled and tripled It's crazy.. What they are going for.. Back 2 years ago I was in a peddler's mall I found 3 or 4 Base station radio's and I passed them up. I've been kicking myself in the butt ever since..
I forgot to mention that the clarifier in this radio is unlocked. If your into SSB an unlocked clarifier is a must. IMHO This one goes 1.7kc down and 1.3 up.. Hey... at least the switches are on the rear. Cheers
I have a stock 142GTL sitting on the desk beside me. Unfortunately, I'm in an apartment with power-lines right outside my window. I think I'll build up a high Q mag-loop this winter and try it out indoors on 11 meters on the Cobra and on my HF gear, as well.
The ol 142 is a decent rig. Narrow bandwidth receiver, lets you know who is off frequency and who doesn't have a stable vco circuit. Very strong tx, easy to make 25 watt pep rig with a little hotter final. That's letting it coast for reliability. Set supply vdc to 14.2 and use a 2sc 2312, If you can find one. If not maybe an old 2sc 1307. If the ol 2sc 1969 is ok it might come close. The 2 watt carrier was the sweet spot for me. But 3 watt carrier is fine. Tougher to make it slide as much, have to choke the varactor diode in clarifier circuit. Yes keep pll circuit stock, unless you have a good expo kit for that chassis. I liked converting them with the 11.325 rather the the 11.125. I would like to experiment with the limiter circuit and change up the attack time. Best results for audio drive is to remove tr 32. But if you want it stock tune it at 4 watts and forget it. Don't forget the cobra 140 and McKinley and tram d 300. The d 300 was a tad different but close and had the 8734 pll like the 2k. 73
I had the Rs 390 some as 490, Washington , etc! There are hand made coils tacked on the bottom of the board. They help the 8950 phase lock loop sync up! If you break them off or lose them in servicing in Radio your in a world of hurt. I was lucky I found on the floor re soldered it then had to play with the coil spacing until the phase locked loop synchronized. And non of that information is on the schematic’s or in the tech manual! UDX-038🇺🇸😎🎙📡
No sir. Just radio and amp. You will need a decent Watt/SWR meter to add between the amp and antenna. Keep the SWRs low when the amp is on. If you have a 1:1 SWr without the amp and a slightly higher SWR with the amp on your still okay. Good Luck my friend.
It was a great radio use a terner plus 3 microphone then radio sounds great on am ssb. I like your idea in running the radio at three white backing the RF power down and getting great modulation using external power supply to run the radio use it on 12 bolt and the radio rod much cooler
The largest antenna you can put up. In CB the bigger the better, you can start with a good ground plane like a Maco 5/8. A starter antenna is a Antron-99 type antenna, while this will work it is a lower performance antenna VS a 5/8 wave ground plane. After that there is a beam antenna, again the more elements (bigger) the better. The key factor with all these antennas is height, for top performance you need to get the antenna 36ft above the ground, anything over 36ft is gravy. Hope this helps.
This could help those who want a Cobra 2000 really bad but don’t have the green stamps to buy one. Given that the 142 is the same as the new model (5 pin) Washington, and it’s the same as a 2000, then this must be the same as a 2000. So buy this and install a $15 programmable freq. counter and you have a 2000 for a lot less money. Or is my pain clouding my thinking?
The 142 is a different board, it is single conversion and the 2000 is dual conversion AM single SSB. Great receiver on the 142 just a little susceptible to bleed over, still better than a lot of modern radios IMHO.
@@390WagonMasterOkay, so I see that the new model Washington is a single conversion board. The Cobra 2000 is dual conversion. I’m trying to learn about these. 😊 As I say all of the time, if I can only learn one new thing a day, I’m ahead. Now I want to do some research on the other radios too. Thanks Wagonmaster! DE UDX-444😊
At this point in time, 100 watt ham rigs vastly outnumber CB radios on the sideband channels. It's my belief that there is no longer a good reason to modify an original classic radio. There have been many times when I had to un-modify a flea market find so that I could troubleshoot it. Tube sets present their own unique problems.
Can you please contact me I have been gifted some amazing things and one is a cobra 142gtl and a CDE antenna rotor and need some more info on how to use the antenna with the cobra
I found you again Mike, Thank's for the video sir
Have had a Cora 2000 for years , just got a 142 this year that imaculate.
I bought mine as a new teenager, and i still have mine made tins of contacts. I was 15, im 46 now
Killer!!! They are great rigs.
hi 390, I just bought one today It needed a 5 pin Cobra microphone I just ordered
Again, inspired by your video as I was on the cobra 138, I purchased a 142gtl
Thanks again I really appreciate and trust your expertise.
Thank you for watching. Cheers
You guys inspired me to bring this old stuff out.. Again, thanks for watching sir.

Good for you my friend, I love these stories. Your GP would like to see you use that radio I'm sure. Cheers
I love the cobra 142 I just bought a Philippines model for $300 from a guy on eBay those were awesome radios.
My luck with Ebay radios is spending a bunch of money on something that doesn't work. Subbed!

Yes that happens, on the bright side.... they made millions of CBs :) Cheers
Enjoyed the video. Think I found one too buy!!!
I have one love it
have one of these with no receive need to find a tech to get it fixed.. one of the loudest radios i ever heard on CB i think he had a plus 3 base mic.
I have one given to me but has extra channels switches on the back and unlocked clarifier
I forgot to mention that the clarifier in this radio is unlocked. If your into SSB an unlocked clarifier is a must. IMHO

Excellent radio. One of the best of that era. I had a 2000 years back. Doesn't the 142 and 2000 have the same board??
No the 2000 is its own board. I forget the Number as I;m not a expert on these radios tech wise. Still learning:) Cheers
A tune up and alignment.... You may as well check the brakes too!!!!✌✌

New to your channel i have one, bought it from an older gentleman a while back , i really like it a lot.
Welcome aboard

Good info.... Thank you!
Correction 8719 PLL.
8950 are the expensive tubes I put in the Maco 300 before I sold it to UDX 99, Sorry UDX 038
Friend of mine has a 142 home base.and pretty sure they are basically the same board as the cobra 2k.looks good 390.👍🇬🇧
Thanks and the 142 is a different board, single conversion. Cheers
Ps I have a 1992 version of the cobra 2k with 1 speaker it also has the uppers and lowers.its showing its age but works 100%
My 2000 is from 92 as well. Great rig
Beautiful radio. You can send it to me if you like !
NO!!!!
@@390WagonMaster Does that mean No !!
I have the same model and I love it great video
New subscriber here 1964 West Texas waving
Thank you sir.
nice radio............
Just pick one of these up from ebay. Works great. What is needed so I can use an amplifier with this base station?
The Radio is good all you need is a AMP and a Power Supply to power the Amp. Oh and a coax jumper to go between the radio and Amp.
@390WagonMaster Thanks. I've been watching videos & have been hearing the term "swing kit" is needed. Thanks for all your help. Awesome content!

can anyone refer me to the proper antenna for this unit?

I jave a bare bone stock 142GTL. is it possible to install this radio in my vehicle?
Yes 100%
i would give you more for that turner plus 2 than i would for that radio
As a die hard Turner guy I do agree. MANY radios have come and gone but the ugly little blue mic stays. Cheers
its a beautiful mic.@@390WagonMaster

What years did they make these
IDK the exact years of manufacture.

I have always said if you need more power get an AMP, need more ch, get a different radio.
@@390WagonMaster Quite true.
I found that raising the antenna another 20 feet did way more than a linear could, and you don’t piss off the neighbors!
I run this exact radio only a 4 pin mic. Would not part with it for love or money.
Yes the 858 version is better IMHO
