Actually Amarinder Singh protected Congress for 5 years. In 2017 had he quit from Congress and joined BJP they would have won hands down. Amarinder Singh's mistake was that he left only a few months before the elections and delayed his decision to ally with BJP. Had he done this even in 2020 as soon as Sidhu started meddling in Punjab government's functioning he would have come out more honorably. Amarinder vowed to defeat Sidhu and he did. It is ok if he lost. He got revenge against Sidhu and Congress for humiliating him.
