FINALLY, *ANXIETY*
ok lore explainer without spoilers here goes:
- this is based on fictional copies of the game that are personalized to be different. this works by using an AI that changes the game based on the player's experience with the game (changing levels, adding/removing enemies, messing up the game). in this story the AI's power is beyond its control and it's trying to get the player to stop playing
- the wario head is a famous urban legend where in personalized copies, a floating wario head would chase the player and cause weird side effects if mario was caught.
- cold cold crevasse and the fourth floor were rumored areas in personalized copies. cold cold crevasse was a fabricated snowy cave level, and the fourth floor was an anomalous changing extra floor of the castle.
- the faceless mario in this is series the embodiment of the personalization AI, speaking to the player directly. it is NOT mario, but a different character with a different name
- the different HUD, mario voice, textures, and areas (like peach's castle not having a staircase) are all from beta versions of the game
- jim's character is expanded upon GREATLY in season 2.
- the ending of the last tape in season 1 didn't actually happen.

This is uncanny because of its nostalgic background. I didn’t grow up playing SM64 but with Machinima videos. So it has an eerie sense of familiarity and comfort. That’s what makes it so effective

interesting that you mention the _"isolation vibe"_ specifically in the second video as it's commonly agreed that Wet Dry World, level 11 (the one showcased in the video) has a weird negative emotion aura that is hard to pinpoint the why

If you wonder why the voice's different, that's because it was a placeholder voice. The well known Charles Martinet's voice was used only in the retail release.

7:40 I don't know if you've heard of B3313 but it's a really weird liminal romhack of sm64. It encapsulates all the liminality of sm64 but makes it even more liminal and creepy. There are a crazy amount of worlds and it's really easy to get lost. I would really love seeing you play it.

The "weird" Mario sounds are the unused beta/alpha sounds Mario made before having his actual sounds put in

Mario 64 is one of my favorite games of all time, it's cool to see how it could be turned into horror

Not sure if you’ll see this, but that floating Wario head is known as the Wario Apparition. It is part of the very popular creepypasta “Every copy of Mario 64 is personalized.” It is said that the Wario apparition causes those who encounter it to experience memory loss and stroke-like symptoms
Not actually in the game itself obviously, but it was originally part of an old Nintendo trailer which featured Wario’s head floating in the Dire Dire Docks stage
Season 2 has much more expanded characters and story, definitely a must-watch.

So thing with the player 2 input, is partially real. Super Mario 64 was intended to have 2 player, but it got cut.

In all honesty, hearing Mario scream in pain when he gets burned is hilarious to me. From then on to Mario Odyssey, it has been my favorite pain sound.
The every copy is personalized is more accurate with all fan mods out today than it ever truly was for console gaming on the N64 I troll mods horror mods even a giant confusing castle mod that feels like a mix of fan recreation of old E3 demos and horror

Pleeease do react to the second half, it's all worth it especially for the Epilogue. You get more story, you get a deeper look into the ai itself. Annie worked really hard on this analog horror ever since the "Every Copy Of SM64 Is Personalized" Stuff was really popular back in 2020-2021.

I think after seeing this with my brother after the AI's did this all and killed them selfs Nintendo made new people up for games going forward so all the Mario people we grow up and loved we're not the real ones after the N64
