Dude since ur in Regensburg and maybe still are there u have to go to the Dom because there is a light show until Friday everyday I think from 1930 to 2000 it is the first ever and it is unbelievable

"Walhalla" or "Valhalla" is/was originally the mythological place of the old Norse god Odin and the warrior heros described as a big hall of fame in the Afterworld...you can compare this a little bit with the greek mythological Olymp as well ...Germans before they became Christians worshipped the same gods as the old Norse vikings but they had just different names in their language (the german Saxons who conquered England worshipped those as well)...Odin was called Woddan or Weddan depending on the dialect...Thor was very often called Donnar as well...but Freya was called Freya by all of them...etc... You have remainings of that in the current weekdays....in english there are 3 = Wednesday was originally "Weddan´s day" and Thursday was originally "Thor´s day"...and Friday was originally "Freya´s day" and in German you got 2 of them = Donnerstag for "Donnar´s day" and Freitag for "Freya´s day"

I'm not sure whether it's easier for Bavarians to understand it (or vice versa). Well, I'm from Bavaria, but I grew up with a swabian aunt and grandfather, so that doesn't count. And my swabian knowledge helped me to understand swiss german more easily. But I don't understand e.g. Kölsch, the dialect of Cologne.

They really cleaned that castle wall! When I studied in Regensburg in the early 1990s, that wall was pitch black from car exhaust and other kinds of dirt. So now it is like it really looked in Roman times, bright and shining, not as dark and sinister I remembered it. Thank you for that! You should have taken some time to film alongside the banks of the river Danube (or Donau, as it's called in German), it's really a wonderful sight. Also, Regensurg has some small, but wonderful parks. I recommend them to everyone who comes to visit. You might even consider studying there; the university is located atop of a small mountain called Galgenberg (Gallows Hill). Nice, isn't it? As to the Walhalla, it sure is a must-see. I had to wander around for some time until I found Einstein, but he's there. Sitting on the steps of Walhalla at sunset, maybe smoking funny things, is really amazing. Bring a flashlight so you will not stumble in the dark!

One of the wonderful things about them is the fact that you can circumnavigate the medieval part of the town, the "Altstadt" in a half-circle from one part of the shore of the Danube to the other just by strolling through the parks - each one with it´s own special shape and atmosphere - with only a few streets to cross in order to reach the next park, beginning with the "Villapark" in the east and ending with the "Herzogspark" in the west.
Regensburg is a very charming and beautiful city. Belongs to the oldest cities in Germany. In Regensburg, so to speak, was the German parliament - the everlasting Reichstag - thus one of the most powerful cities in the Roman Empire, founded in 179 AD. Christ. It was the first city in Germany to have carved its name in stone. In contrast, Munich is historically only a village and just about 860 years old. Regrettably, it was often in bad political leadership (especially the 20th and 21st centuries), destroying many historic buildings and even eliminating the tram altogether. It is sad that some people still try to impose the combination "historical and new" on the city ... often visible in the old town. A great video! Thanks! 👋

Anyway, my parents are german speaking and I just love seeing Americans loving Germany. My family of five went to several countries last fall and topped of the trip at Oktoberfest. He is definitely the Thor of Valhalla. And a side note: all those cobblestone streets must be murder on women with spikey high heels. Another observation about something I think is funny: Andrew talks about the streets being too narrow for vehicles, but the sight at 2:43 proves that those streets aren't too narrow for grafitti artists to have hit the Historisches Eck. At about 4:15 we hear about the oldest fast food restaurant in the world, which serves....wait for it: sausage!...with sauerkraut! That's conclusive proof that the oldest fast food is German. Not just sausage. Bratwurscht! Mit!Sauerkraut! I miss it! Did you realise: it is fast food served without wrapping or packaging. So there's no waste. Like in Hof, Franconia. Since 1881 the "Wärschtlamo" (Würstchenmann) serves the sausages in a bread roll with mustard or nowadays ketchup and without Sauerkraut. Me and my husband live in Germany only for about 3 more weeks sadly. But it's been a great 2 years being here. We were just in Regensburg today and have been to Valhalla and the castle that's right next to it where you can see Valhalla from it. Regensburg is absolutely stunning. If you've never been to the little place on the river called Wurstkuchl you're definitely missing out! We go every time we are in Regensburg! Germany is an amazing country so enjoy!

It is also a great city. Similar to Regensburg just a bit bigger! They have great places to eat in the old town center and it's a great place to by fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables during spring and summer. Make sure you check out the Christmas markets and try the glühwien!

Regensburg is my all-time favorite city. I am from - and live in - Amberg, about 70 km from Regensburg. Amberg is also a very nice city, an awesome hometown. But it lacks some of the almost mediterian laid-back flair of Regensburg - and luckily also the traffic jams and the immensly cost of living. I visit Regensburg at least twice a month to roam around and meet friends. For me the optimal solution :-)
I've never seen the rubber duck race anywhere tbh and I've lived in Bavaria all my life. But I'm happy to know that you love Regensburg as much as I do!

6:50 It's even better. It's called the "Donau Radweg" and it goes from almost the beginning of the danube all the was to Budapest and It's awesome. I once rode a bike from Regensburg to Passau(ca.140km away) with a friend in Just 8-9 hours because It's so good.

No, the area without cars isn't unique at all. Most cities in Germany have those somewhere. They are called "Verkehrsberuhigte Zone" (Traffic free area).
Its obvious that you dont know much ! Walhalla is the place in heaven where germanic gods live , like Thor , Wotan and many others , old german heros would go there after a heroic fight. Regensburg is 2000 years old , founded by the roman empire.

What a small world. I was an exchange student studying in Regensburg in 1991-2. I lived in Gesslerheim. I have such fond memories of my year there.

6:50 It's even better. It's called the "Donau Radweg" and it goes from almost the beginning of the danube all the was to Budapest and It's awesome. I once rode a bike from Regensburg to Passau(ca.140km away) with a friend in Just 8-9 hours because It's so good.

No, the area without cars isn't unique at all. Most cities in Germany have those somewhere. They are called "Verkehrsberuhigte Zone" (Traffic free area).
