    Dude that washer not sitting flush 100% saved you from breaking studs once the engine was in the car running. If that wasn't there, they would have torqued fine but once you hit that boosted for long enough, that head would have went thru the hood! Id call that a blessing.

    If you guys are coming back to Wisconsin anytime soon, I have a 4G63 engine for sale at a killer price. Was built by Boostin Performance in Chicago and the engine has zero miles on it since the rebuild. Was supposed to go in a 95 Talon but the chassis (like your old one) was rusted out. So the motor has just been sitting ever since. Had it built for 800WHP. Have paperwork for everything.

    If you guys are running anything higher than 9.1:1 compression it’s going to lift the head on 93oct or 91oct 4g don’t like too much timing either unless you are using e85 or race gas. At least that’s my experience for the 12 years I had my evo. My recommendation, 8.5:1 compression maybe 9:1 max. Conservative timing if 91 or 93oct

    • @JosephHalder
      @JosephHalder หลายเดือนก่อน

      Aren't they factory pretty low compression, I know the 1G DSMs were. I can't imagine they were going too high on compression ratio.

    • @Dappersworth
      @Dappersworth หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Head lifting is based entirely on cylinder pressures alone, so it's the peak boost you're running combined with the timing and ultimately the horsepower level you are running. Using a higher octane to fix head lift doesn't make sense?

  • @Tac_3403

    To assemble an engine and only have these few problems is really a great feat.
    I'm not a mechanic, just a DIY car enthusiast. I managed to break my rear caliper by overextending it, cost me $100 for a reman caliper.. But i learned to pay attention more while doing things.
    Today, I was installing my lowering springs and camber arms in the rear. I got them on and put the lower control arm back on, but couldn't get the end link, so I undid the sway bar bracket bolts, got the end link in and snugged down. Then proceeded to cross thread AND break off the bracket bolt inside the chassis. Paid a welder friend to come weld a bolt to it to remove it, now i learned to make sure to start bolts by hand, and to not over tighten.
    I'd take 100 Marks before adding another me to break things on my car! Can't wait to see this thing with some fresh injectors, its gunna be a ripper!

    That clutch damage is due the actual clutch disc HOPPING up and down during the engagement from too much torque. Root cause of this is NOT the disc, but a failure of the pressure plate to keep the disc engaged.
    You could use the same disc type but you WILL need a heavier pressure plate.
    Great thing about 4G63 flywheels is you can easily replace the friction disc on the flywheel.

    Mark, great job man! I've been there myself a few times.
    Just a heads up. Make sure you have the correct oil pan bolts going into the front cover directly under the timing belt. There are supposed to be two shorter bolts in the set to make sure the Timing Belt doesn't rub against the oil pan bolts during operation.

    Amazing job on Mark leading this video and building the engine. It was great watching what was reused, unlike other TH-camrs who use new parts regardless of the condition of the one coming off. The battle is having the knowledge to know what was wrong and learning for next time. Keep moving forwards Mark!

    ARP supplies smaller washers than the OEM diameter. You can buy specialty washers that center in the stud hole and have a larger OD. You can buy washers from ARP that match OEM or you can buy 1" OD washers from ARP and take them down to 0.960" for that extra bit of load spreading goodness.
    Looks like you've got the undersized washers. They will dig into the head and you'll lose clamping force. Also by torquing above the 80ftlbs without having the block honed for the L19 head studs at that value you've warped the bores. As tested back in the day by guys on the dsmtuners page you've introduced up to 1.5 thou of cylinder distortion. The head is the weakest link in holding on the boost pressure not the stud.

    Don’t feel bad Mark, you’re a wizard in my book. I’m a DIYer (not to your extent of knowledge) but I know how exhausting and frustrating it is to do and re-do the same thing over and over again. Heck I’ve started proyects at 4pm and ended at 3am. But we still get shit done🔥. Know you know what’s wrong, the fix is easy. Pat yourself in the back and go treat yourself to some nice food, watch a show or movie and get some sleep man🙏
    Love to the G&G family from Puerto Rico.❤️🔥

    This is the kind of stuff you'd see on a broadcast tv episode be way over dramatic but they still manage to get the job done in time, but the real world doesn't work that way. Sometimes we just mess up on something stupid, I know I do. I feel you Mark, it sucks haha but it was awesome to see you tackle the job head on! Much respect, now you'll be prepared for the next time it blows up
