Frances Farmer was actually at the old Western State Hospital in Lakewood (south Tacoma, Wa). It was across the street from what is now Western State....and across Ft. Steilacoom Park on top of a hill that overlooked Lake Waughop. She wrote about the beautiful mist coming up from the lake through the poplars that surrounded it. That place was shut down in the 50s I think. And they just left it. And as teens in the 70s we used to venture in to it. Spookiest fucking place ever. Bed frames stacked against walls, the odd dripping water... and of course the insane random graffiti. They tore it down in the 90s, but they left the foundation.

Jessica Lange was absolutely incredible in her portrayal as Frances Farmer in the 1982 film 'Frances' - It's well worth watching, although it's pretty harrowing and left her so emotionally exhausted and traumatised that she deliberately accepted the role as Julie Nichols in 'Tootsie' afterwards because it was a light-hearted comedy and would provide the much needed contrast to help her to readjust psychologically. Jessica is so good at playing emotionally unhinged characters, but it must take its toll, no wonder the poor woman has suffered from intermittent bouts of depression throughout her adult life. I am so glad that I'm an atheist, having survived and learned so much (but not in the way that was intended) from attending a Roman catholic school - which rather than indoctrinate, made me question the whole concept and purpose of this alleged 'god' - it just didn't make any sense to me at all and prior to rejecting the very idea that a god existed I first held the belief that this 'god' actually sounded like the biggest turd imaginable...a hideously evil, vain and cruel deity who punished the innocent and vulnerable whilst seeming to reward the most undeserving, selfish, greedy, megalomaniacal specimens of mankind. @@PowersBenzoCoaching actually she said 'electric shock treatment' , not the same as being lobotomised. A lobotomy is removing parts of your brain. Her treatments were in the 1940's theres no way someone has a lobotomy then continues to work another 20 years in theatre and television
@@spacexmike I believe she did have a lobotomy and it's entirely possible to keep working after such a procedure. Also, she didn't exactly resume her career after her horrible experiences in a state hospital. She had a handful of small appearances on TV shows, and tried to host her own show. She was clearly never the same and always seemed a bit off since her return.
I believe she was likely lobotomized, as it was the trend at the time. However, the drugs, the raping, the horrible living conditions, and the shock therapy alone can do a number. The shock therapy used then wasn't like today. It was the wild west of mental health, and there were almost no governing body to ensure things were done correctly. There was a lot of abuse.
I'm not sure why some of you seem to sure she didn't have a lobotomy. Didn't she herself report that she had received one? What's the motivation for the certainty that she hadn't?

Kurt was wrong on at least one detail; Farmer wasn't given a lobotomy. That was an embelishment by her biographer.

Jessica Lange was absolutely incredible in her portrayal as Frances Farmer in the 1982 film 'Frances' - It's well worth watching, although it's pretty harrowing and left her so emotionally exhausted and traumatised that she deliberately accepted the role as Julie Nichols in 'Tootsie' afterwards because it was a light-hearted comedy and would provide the much needed contrast to help her to readjust psychologically.
Jessica is so good at playing emotionally unhinged characters, but it must take its toll, no wonder the poor woman has suffered from intermittent bouts of depression throughout her adult life.
I am so glad that I'm an atheist, having survived and learned so much (but not in the way that was intended) from attending a Roman catholic school - which rather than indoctrinate, made me question the whole concept and purpose of this alleged 'god' - it just didn't make any sense to me at all and prior to rejecting the very idea that a god existed I first held the belief that this 'god' actually sounded like the biggest turd imaginable...a hideously evil, vain and cruel deity who punished the innocent and vulnerable whilst seeming to reward the most undeserving, selfish, greedy, megalomaniacal specimens of mankind.
It certainly makes more sense that such a deity is no more than a myth created by man!

the book stopped being printed because it was proven to be made up to make money - most of Kurt is talking about was proven to be false -- she never was given a lobotomy and she didn't die until 1970 - she did a bunch of things after she got out of mental hospital in the 50s
