TOEFL Speaking and Writing - AVOID 'say' - 16 Better Alternatives
In TOEFL Speaking and in TOEFL Writing you must avoid using the verb ‘say’ - I show you 16 better alternatives that you can use instead. There are several TOEFL tasks where you need to talk about what another person said. If you want to get a high TOEFL score, you should not only use the verb ‘to say’. Rather, you must use different verbs to express what somebody said. These verbs are important TOEFL vocabulary, so make sure that you memorize them. If you use these verbs during your TOEFL preparation, it will be a lot easier for you to remember them in the TOEFL test.

HOW TO WORK WITH THIS VIDEO
    1. Watch the video and make sure you understand everything.
    2. Download the illustration.
    3. Use the illustration for your TOEFL preparation.
    FYI
The examples I use in the video and in the illustration are made up by me.
    1) SAYING
In TOEFL Speaking and in TOEFL Writing task 1 you need to talk about what another person says. For example, in TOEFL Speaking there is the campus announcement task where you need to talk about the opinion of a person regarding an announcement. In these tasks you should use synonyms for ‘to say’. This way you show ETS that you have a broad range of vocabulary and this will improve your TOEFL score. These are synonyms that you can use instead:
    state
    believe
    think
    remark
    2) POINTING OUT
In TOEFL Speaking in the campus announcement task and in TOEFL Writing it can happen that the person says that one of his arguments is really important. In this case you must express that this argument is crucial for this person. If you do this, you show ETS that you know the vocabulary to do that and you also show that you have understood that the person finds this argument particularly important. These are verbs that you can use to do this:
    point out
    emphasize
    highlight
    stress
    3) ARGUING
In TOEFL Writing task 1 you must explain the arguments of a writer and a lecturer. Each of the two argues for something. It is important that you express this by using different verbs. This is TOEFL vocabulary that you must know because you must show ETS that the person is arguing for something and that you can describe this using appropriate words. Use these verbs to express that a person argues for something:
    argue
    hold
    maintain
    claim
    4) OBJECTING
In TOEFL Writing task 1 the writer and the lecturer have opposing views. Usually, the writer states something and the lecturer opposes this argument. Use these verbs to express that one person opposes the arguments of another person:
    challenge
    call into question
    reject
    refute

Reporting from Cuba here! Hola Juva. I love your videos. Thank you for all your advices! Keep on your good work!
I have a question about the Writing section, on the integrated task I think? The first task. The one with the lecture.
So I'm studying with the TOEFL Official Guide app. And these practice tests they come with an ""Audio Transcription "" for the lecture. So you can actually see" the lecture. But the same, just for the one time , while the audio is on.
My question. Do you remember if you had that " as an option in your test? Or is this just an option for practice tests? If you understand what I mean...
I have problems with the spelling and if this is actually an option on the lecture part. Uff! Live saver! 😅

    • @juva
      @juva  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hola Maria! Thank you so much, I'm so glad you like them :). There is no transcription for the lecture in TOEFL Writing, you only listen to it. Sorry for the bad news! If you like, have a look at my video where I talk about the integrated task, it may be helpful to you. Muchos saludos :)

hello juva i have a question please
in my toefl exam silly me thought that in the listening part isnt there maybe 6 minutes for the first 11 questions?
i thought that the time is restarting, 6 min for each question and took my time so i missed many of the last questions time was up
it is my fault right? the proctor told me to email ets but they wont do anything about it right?
im so sad because in listening usually the mark is highest

    • @juva

Hello, I'm so sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, the time doesn't restart. Don't be sad, perhaps you didn't miss that many questions and your score is not affected that much.

I am wondering, if I am the only person who switch subtitles ( in English ) on when I watch any movie, or there are others like me ,I'd love to know that . especially if you are a native speaker!
    what about you juva!

    • @juva
      @juva  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Excellent question Marwa! I think it depends on whether you just started to learn English or whether you are more advanced. If you just started, it may be difficult understanding everything, so subtitles are a great help. If you are more advanced, you can switch them off to train your ears ;). I don't switch them on but I have been listening to English TV series for quite some time, so I'm used to it.
