The Enigma of Nightjars - A short documentary film

  • A short film based on my Master's Dissertation on the vocalization of nightjars in a Central Indian landscape.
    What an incredible experience it has been!
    It was indeed a privilege to be able to complete it during the ongoing pandemic.
    And it would not have been possible without the continuous support of my parents, especially my father who spent every single night on the field with me.
    I would also like to extend my gratitude to Dr. Shamita Kumar for her guidance throughout this journey and to Mr. Sunil Shiwarkar, our local guide, for teaching us about the local wildlife and the culture through his endless stories.
    Also, massive thanks to Vinit Singh and Ajinkya Dharaskar for their much needed support both on field and off!
    And last, but not the least, thanks to Rohan Desai for his guidance in making this film.

      It is nice to be able to identify the night sounds I have been hearing now. I was mowing one of our pastures at dusk and glad to now identify the bird I noticed nesting. I left the area near nest unmown until after mid-June or when no activity. I pray the barn cat does not find it!

    I love Nightjars. I have been lucky to see them several times, and hear them as well. Only a few nights ago I was treated to a sighting as I drove along a country lane near my home. My car lights I think did stun it, and it settled on the road for a minute. I stopped the car as it was 4.30 am and no One else around. I was absolutely overjoyed to see it .

    Wonderful ! Different environment from the english nightjar with which I’m familiar, but same family of course. In England the bird has no enemies ( other than people walking on its nests! ) and we certainly have no tigers where it is found ! Do the male Indian nightjars do the wing claps too ?

    Truly a beautiful production. I’ve been filming birds professionally for about 6 months, and the Nighthawk has captured my curiosity more than most. Is the screech sound really their wings making that sound while in the air? I’ve yet to see one on the ground, so I’ve never heard the sounds you showed in this video. Wonderful job! Do more!

    • @mayurikotian225
      @mayurikotian225  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Kudos to you for filming birds! These birds indeed are very fascinating creatures. The screech sound is a vocal sound however sometimes they will also produce a flapping sound while in air (not in this video). Also, I'm assuming you're talking about nighthawks which are different from nightjars. You would mostly find nighthawks in an around central America whereas this video includes three species of nightjars from central India. I'm guessing this is why you've never heard these sounds. Thanks for watching! Glad you found it interesting! :)

    I found this bird, sitting on the ground,some people say it is a bird of ill omen and death, it had a frog like mouth,but I think it was ill,because it did not fly away, i gave it some water,and let it go but it would not fly and next morning it was still on the ground outside where I left it but a rat I think had ate its head off,a sad end, but I tried to help it,the only misfortune and death was to itself.
