I was going to make a comment about the similarities of stoicism and daoism and how they came into being independently of one another , but are so similar etc, but there's no point in me mentioning that when the two masters are present (George and yourself)

@@martind5565 no, no, no. Daoism is not similar to Stoicism. they are very far apart. This is the problem when you have youtube content that spreads waterdown teachings of Daoism. Read some Zhuangzi and scholars like Hans-Georg Moeller or listen to Jason Gregory and then tell me how similar they are. I hope you get in touch with the real teachings of Daoism. As Chinese I find it weird that such comparisons are made. Maybe what people teach outside China is not Daoism.

@@richardwong5670 I've read the tao te ching, I actually have zhuangzi ill be reading it after I finish the book I'm reading just now.
The similarities I see, is being content with what you have, no caring what other people think of you, be kind, coming to terms with mortality, patience especially with others, non judgement, appreciating solitude but also enjoying company and the importance of nature.
What are your thoughts on this observation (I'm genuinely interested) and have you read many of the stoic teachings?

Hi George, let me call you 师兄 ShiXiong here. Because of your film, I am in Wudang mountain with Master Gu right now! It is SOOO amazing that a Chinese living in Shanghai like me find out through TH-cam that such a place still exists in China! After all, it is not the border of countries that separated us, but the distance from outside to inside world. I got really luck to enter to the mountain a few days ago despite the covid policy restrictions. It definitely reminds me how challenging was for you to enter in 2020! Master Gu and I talked about you a lot.
Wish you find a way to keep your powerful, peaceful, beautiful mind.

I can't begin to tell you how much I needed this. I recently turned 69, and I have been feeling as if my life was over. Even though I am unusually healthy for my age, my body has let me know that I am no longer young. I live in isolation, in a place that is not my home, with very little social interaction. Perhaps this is an opportunity to turn within and develop a new understanding of life and mortality. I am a Zen Buddhist, and I find Taoism is completely compatible with the Dharma of The Buddha. Thank you for taking this journey. Whether you realize it or not, you have taken it for the benefit of all sentient beings. One thing I have learned in my 69 years is that if you change one thing, you change everything! Keep up the good work, please!

@@haluonbeats1748 I can honestly say that I am doing better. I went through an extremely stressful situation a few months ago. I almost became homeless, just as my old body collapsed on me. I am proud to say that I did not panic. I stuck to my practice and my routine, and miraculously, I was saved from homelessness at the very last moment. Now I can see about getting a hip replacement! I am exercising, losing weight, learning and practicing, and I have decided to return to the place of my birth. I am packing and saving, and hoping to be fully recovered in time to be back home in 2 years. I was born in New York City in the Year of The Dragon, and I plan to be in Times Square on New Years Eve to see 2024, the next Year of The Dragon come in. I will be in Chinatown that February to celebrate with fireworks and dancing Dragons and Fu dogs. This goal has focused my energies, and given me something to look forward to. I'll be 72 by then, and ready to start a whole new adventure back on my native soil. Happy New Year and Best Wishes for YOUR future! IT'S NEVER TOO LATE!!!

@@meghraj1434 Thank you for those kind words. They came just when needed. Once again I am facing the spectre of homelessness. I was informed on New Year's Eve that I have a new landlord, and that my rent has tripled. I refuse to panic! I am maintaining my daily routine. I am meditating, exercising, and doing whatever is necessary to resolve the issue. I'm getting used to spending a large part of my day ON HOLD! I'm so old, I actually remember a time when you dialed your rotary phone, and an actual human being picked it up and spoke to you, Ha! One thing I've learned is that life never stops coming at you. You have to be both strong and flexible to ride the waves. I constantly remind myself that I have dealt with everything that has come my way for 70 years, and this is no different. 7 times down, 8 times up!!! This too shall pass, and one way or another, I will celebrate The Year of the Dragon on my native soil! I wish you all the best in this coming year. Stay safe, be strong (and flexible), and never despair. Be grateful for challenges, for they are the crucible of character!

Very good, refreshing window on life, how it effects us and others in different parts of the world, who live in ways, with less, but have a better life enjoying being here with only the necessry not the must haves. The need for greed is destroying all things good in this world. It will effect us all at some point in life, maybe in different ways. But we should all make our stand for us and nature along with the rock we live on. I dont want an electric car, that will mean destroying much more of the planet, the cost is to high. Wealth, greed, what about earth, nature, living by only taking what we need, not what we can make profit from. Destroying all around us, so we can feel good about ourselves. Out of sight out of mind, out of mind, out of care. Do not abandon your duty of care, as greedy corps and bankers have. The cost is to high. George, when at the farm alone with nature, you still hung onto western pc, not conducive to getting back to nature. Plus when connecting with the nature, you missed the one important thing, we are from the same, we have forgotten how to be as nature. Plus relevant to the empty streets back in Bristol, nature has lived along side us, ever since we left the primeval ooze, from the micro organisms, viruses, bacterias, they need us, and we need them. Without the ying and yang life would not exist. Together in harmony we have evolved, on diff levels in diff ways, but together we are here. The nature you saw was not out to do you in, but survive as we used to, before we got the need for greed bug. This is the problem, not anything natural from nature. Think about what i am saying. I guess you have a wealth of paper bound insight close at hand. Dont waste your life without knowing, why, what for. Great things can be achieved by increasing your understanding of all things on this septic isle. Dao. Knowledge will guide you.

George, wonderful documentary & i am sitting in isolation lockdown as i watched this, The Journey To The East! I remember the beginning of your auspicious journey within in 2017, i just subscribed before i took a personal sabbatical to help my elderly Parents transition through cancer & dementia & walking them home. I have been able to pick up the thread here & see the unfolding of You & congratulations on becoming a Disciple with Master Gu 😊 Wudang Mountain is Majestic & one gets a distinct sense of it being a wonderful place to cultivate essence., to grow & to become. Waves to You & Master Gu From Australia, i really enjoyed Journey to the east, Thank You for taking me with You! Peace 💜

@@George-Thompson I think you will be like Sir David Attenborough in your deliveries in video/documentaries, he brings awareness to being HumanKIND & Mindful of Nature & Animals. You on the other hand George, are bringing knowledge to battered Souls, who can relate to you, everyone is on a Journey home to The Wisdom Of The East. I think like you, other Souls are searching, in need of Peace, Nature, Direction & Happiness, The Way! 😊🙏

Your generosity in documenting, persevering through, and sharing this amazing work/film is exemplary, humbling and deeply inspiring. I have come to a state of deep awakening (if I may call it so, without arrogance or pretentious claims) quite recently, my life rapidly seeing a multitude of beneficial changes on ALL levels, and though I came from a multiplicity of philosophies, sciences and meditation (along with many more "items"), these various facets of my path are ultimately mere reflections of the singularity that we all share in, consciously or unknowingly.
Your journey seems to have many similarities to my own chaotic path, and I have the dearest wish I could at least once perhaps travel to and meet the same part of this world as you have. I think and believe (and feel) a lot of what we are given a glimpse of in this film is how things should be for Nature and us humans, universally.
If I cannot find it in this life to make even a brief, honest and humble pilgrimage to this most impressive and harmonious place of wisdom, then I shall let it inspire me as wholly and fully as I can assimilate and breathe its natural principles into my own daily reality.
Bless you (and All of you).

Hey George! Thank you for making this. When I visited China to see my cousin, we traveled to Wudangshan and met Master Gu and a couple of the other students. We had tea and were able to receive a Daoist lesson before we continued to the top. It is surreal to see this up on youtube and see the temples we visited. Outside of the culture, no one where I live knows anything about Wudangshan or Daoism so it's an excellent way for me to show people and for them to start their Journey. If you ever saw an "Ohio State University" shirt, that was from my cousin haha. Thank you again for making this!

Master Gu is definitely such a lovely person! I literally stunbled into his school one day, trying to take a picture of the beautiful sunrise that morning and not realizing that I was not on a public building 😅🙈 He was so sweet having a chat with me that early morning and we talked about daoism as I was there in another Masters school for a year studying kung fu. If I ever plan to practice kung fu again, I think I would want to go to his school

Beautiful documentary ❤️, very necessary for todays world. As an animal and ambiental activist, it’s been very stressful and painful to see all the things that happens thanks to anthropocentrism (which I say is the root cause of most problems). Climate change, deforestation, pollution, trillions of beautiful sentient animals exploited and killed every year, and even covid and most pandemics!! all of those are the result of anthropocentrism: believing our power and intelligence justifies the destruction of everything that surround us, without understanding our role as humans as just one more piece from this amazing universe. While watching the documentary I teared thinking how beautiful the world could be if people knew about this, if people stopped rushing and replicating what societies make you see as normal, without stopping for a moment to see what we are doing to our fellow animals, and our home. Stopping, reflecting, without being afraid to accept we were doing unnecessary harm, knowing from now on, we can work on making a more peaceful and balanced world for everyone who lives here. I always felt taoism went so so well with veganism and ambientalism, I would love to talk about that and meet other people who see the relation there. There’s so much modern ethical and ecological theory that are so similar to taoist teachings from thouthands years old... what an amazing thing is taoism. I think covid woke up many minds around the world, I’m looking forward to seeing more people joining, the world will be more beautiful than ever.

Loved it. I've been a western Taoist since I found the Tao Te Ching at age 13, after a falling out of belief with my born faith (Christianity). Nobody has ever begun to make Taoist content (especially with over 100k views) until recently, and I very much appreciate the work you put into this full length documentary on my most favorite thing in the world. I mean, how could the Tao not be? I've enjoyed watching you and this channel grow with this sweet old Master on the mountain. Wish you peace and clarity.

2:24 sent some asmr chill over my whole body and I have the absolute biggest smile on my face! It's time for me to come home too. A few years back, I had a sort of breakthrough, I'd found Eastern philosophy & I was growing spiritually. Soon though, I fell back into old habits & insecurity. I'd forgotten all I had learned and spent so long wondering if I'd ever feel the pull back to Taoism, the east, and the need to experience life that way. I'm happy to say that the spark has returned to me! I'm starting over by watching your fascinating content & am hoping to deliver into the deeper parts of my humanity so that I can find my way back to the peace I had before & find my life's purpose. I want to thank you George. We don't know each other, but I'd be remiss if I didn't thank you for your friendship & allowing the world to accompany you on your journey. Someday soon, I hope to come study Taoism in China, like you. Thanks again! 💯❤️☯️

This documentary is absolutely fantastic. I have been profoundly moved to actually question my life in the context of the greater whole. I thought those concepts were merely philosophical, something to contemplate when there was nothing else to do. Wow. I have always been drawn to Daoism, as a philosophy, but not as a practical mode to walk through my day to day life. I am open to the experience of fullness/emptiness as two parts of the whole. Thank you so very much George for making this available to us. I am truly interested in the Master Gu's Academy that will help me become the best version of myself in this lifetime, navigating the rapids we find in the collapsing systems of this world.
