    On the "Don't feed the animals" bit, a lot of people really don't get that. When you feed a wild animal, it doesn't understand the relationship that you "gave" it food, all it knows is that humans are a good source of food. As he put it, if you don't have any food, _you_ are the food. If a hungry animal associates people with food, that means that it's hungry when it approaches people, and one way or another it's going to try and find some food.
    Tamed animals can be taught to associate certain _actions_ with food, which is very different. Your dog, your cat, or even a captive animal like this gator here, have enough exposure that they realize the distinction between being fed and hunting, and more importantly, they get fed often enough that they never get desperate enough to turn to hunting for food.
    The absolute worst is a conditioned wild animal: That is, a thoroughly wild animal that actually _has_ learned the difference and is relatively tame. The problem here is while it might not approach people with the intent of eating them, it isn't afraid of people and will approach them readily and often. Despite that, it's still a wild animal and has very powerful fight or flight reflexes, so any little thing could set it off and cause an attack, and every encounter with a person is a new chance for an attack, especially since your average tourist knows next to nothing about handling animals or animal body language. It's just a ticking time bomb at that point, until someone moves in a way it doesn't like.
    The best way to interact with wild animals is at a distance, so that the animal doesn't feel threatened or cornered

      Yes, I agree. Never feed wild animals, unless with an expert’s supervision. I feel bad for the local geese at a nearby river. It’s all fun and games to feed them until someone gets attacked. And of course, it’s the animal's fault if sth bad happens. The geese also will less likely go for their own food, less likely to look for their own food, because they know people will feed them bread. And the bread isn’t good for their health, either. It's why I'll never feed any geese or other wild animals without guidance from a vet. I love seeing the geese and talking to them, but I make sure to keep a safe distance. I had one the other day that had its mouth open, was staring at me, obviously showing signs of aggression. So, I walked to the other side of the street.

    • @RotisserieiJamie
      @RotisserieiJamie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Roselyroses it’s so upsetting and it’s so infuriating that animals pay the price for humans stupidity. Humans are the ones at fault. Not the animals. Leave wild animals alone! Humans need to stop destroying everything too. Every single problem on earth is because of humans.

    As a wildlife rehabilitator of small mammals and birds, I understand your love and care for these prehistoric giants. It's not a job that ever makes money because you would have to exploit the animals to do so. Sure we get a donation here and there, but we keep our regular jobs that actually pay the bills so we can keep offering second chances to injured or orphaned wildlife. Hugs from all of us to you and your cause.
    Like all wild animals, they easily become victims of their own success when humans are involved. People get scared (I have had people want me remove skunks they were terrified of 😂) or they don't like nature's children doing what they do in their habitat (dig for grubs, etc). 90% of the time, a bit of education will make the human "drop all charges". With the woman terrified of a local skunk, I was able to turn her into a skunk enthusiast. She now sips wine with her friends on her porch while observing her new skunk buddy (skunks are incredibly sweet, they are just hated for having the best, non-violent self defense). I'm confident videos like this are doing the same - shedding some light on a misunderstood animal just doing what anyone would do if their life depended on it.

I have a lot of history in Florida, living in Palm Beach on the island, going to the University of Miami, taking marine biology, living on the West Coast also, being a migrant farm worker down there, picking oranges, working at the juice plant in Wauchula Florida, etc.! My husband and I Lyft at Pioneer Park in Sulphur Springs, and we had a resident alligator that lived right across the fairly small long pond where we would camp, living in a tent the first year, and then living in a travel trailer with our new baby the next year! I named Barbie Google! From old song, “with the goo-goo googly eyes“! He would lay up on the bank, opposite us, and bask in the sun during the day when does gator whole below… And then we could see him cruising around at night, hunting… we could see his eyeballs only when we flashed our flashlight, etc. on him! Heard him do his gator call here and there, and I learned how to do a gator call! Hard on the voice!

    He is right about the gators returning, but I read that farthest documented relocation of a gator that returned was around 30 miles. And many believe it has more to do with their insanely strong sense of smell than a homing skill or ability. So a strong wind could send familiar smells the gator follows.

    • @taylordw

      That’s a gator not a croc, while both are unpredictable wild animals, crocs are generally more aggressive. I don’t know whether this guy could do this with a croc. No untrained person with any sense would do it with either animal

    I used to give talks with reptiles for schools, scouts, and public service groups in MD. One of my regrets about moving to SC was having to give up my alligators due to that state's restrictions on possession.

    We have a small gator that shows up time to time in our pond at River Ranch. He must come over to eat the bluegills in the pond and goes back to the canal west of our camp.

    I grew up in gator country. My Dad taught me to be safe around them as well as other wild animals. He was very clear that feeding wild animals, particularly predators was a big no-no.
