How I Built an Amazing Custom Slide in Center Console for my Van | 96' Ford Econoline

  • I nearly got this 1996 Ford E-350 Club wagon van for free because it was vandalized and broken into with important stuff stolen. One of the things that were missing was the center console. This had all the cup holders and storage. The center console attachment design from 1992 to 1996 is much different than the vans after this. These older center consoles are nearly impossible to find and would cost way too much if you did find one. I decided to build my own center console that slides in and locks into place just like the original and is way more useful. Follow along as I build the entire thing and show you the whole process. I don't have a lot of carpentry experience but this taught me a lot. I hope you find this video useful and thanks for watching!

    Growing up we had Jeep Wrangler with manual transmissions and they never had a center console so we'd build one out of pallet and scrap wood. Remember moving it in the new Jeep and it fitting which felt like a win. Awesome build and showing how to and what you learned. Great video🥰

    Great job. Both in construction and documentation. I need to build one for my 96 e150 and this was very helpful.

    Looks great. Good job! I would warn you to be very careful about storing anything in the same compartment with your carry piece that could get into the trigger guard. You might consider getting one of those kydex trigger covers that can be secured with a short lanyard. Of course, a lot depends on what sort of objects you store alongside the gun, but as clutter accumulates, the danger increases of something getting into the trigger guard. Please check those trigger covers.
    Personally, I would consider ditching the magnet and just attaching a kydex holster inside the compartment.
    Confession: I stash my gun in the storage bin of my console, under a bandanna. But it's in a holster. I just remove the entire holster and stash it in the bin: the gun never leaves the holster.

      Good thing to consider for sure, my poor transmission will be toast if that happens haha. Yeah leaving in holster is a good way to do it

    This thing is cool. My Astro van has cup holders already, but they're not very deep, so you have to hang onto anything sitting on them anyway. I should figure something out similar to the ones you used to fix that. In my van I usually have to put my feet up on the seat and crawl over it to get to the back because the stock console thing is too big to squeeze my legs between. I'm loving this build though.

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks! Yeah im not sure why they would make shallow cup holders in a vehicle. Yeah im sure you can figure something out is the console removable? Thats a bit annoying. Are you going to make that thing 4x4? Good to hear!

    • @ridethroughlifertl
      @ridethroughlifertl ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4WheelKid It's not removeable as far as I can tell. I think it's screwed to the engine cover. I do want to do the 4x4 transfer case mod. I can get a used one out of an S10 and buy a manual 4x4 lever kit. I was thinking about doing an engine swap, but that'd be further in the future.

    As you plan your build, I recommend checking out two other TH-camrs who have a similar van with very different build outs: Forestry Forest and Primal Outdoors. Both are full time so your needs might be substantially different; however, they might have ideas you can use. Enjoy the process as I know my first van was a lot of fun to build out

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure ill check them out. Maybe I can get some good ideas. I actually deleted the 2 largest windows. And have most of the van raptor lined. Working on a sweet bed design right now. Cant wait to get some of my recent video out. Yeah building is most of the fun haha

  • @ThingsAboutMusic
    @ThingsAboutMusic ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So neat to you were able to custom build the console. Only a wooded handmade would've suited a conversion van.
    I'd put a lock or even better a false bottom to hide the gun.....
    I would be interested in a video, why and how you decided to carry a gun?

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks! yeah will set the tone for the rest of the interior that i'm building yeah its mostly just a spot to keep it while i'm in the van. i'm making a secret compartment under the bed that uses an nfc lock then possibly a small safe in there that is bolted to the steel bed frame that is welded into the van body

    Great vid man! I have been following the build on ig and that came out great!! If you can ,let us know how the magnetic gun mount works out if you get a chance to drive on rough roads. I want one for my truck but i dont wanna buy one if they are not good. Cant wait to see the rest of the build 🤙🏻

      @4WheelKid  ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks! only one way to get carpentry skills though. thought about that but decided not to because the material was so thin. it worked out perfectly when I used some hot glue, it stopped it from wobbling, now there is 0 movement even without the lock
