    Said with a straight face, in all earnest: "When faced with a challenge like this, the thing to do is not crack on with it, but instead, procrastinate by buying things for the boat..."
    It's moments like this that I absolutely love this channel.

    Some advice from an ex owner of a fiberglass boat, use or ignore at your own,risk. Pulling carpet out is almost always a fool's errand. It's tons of work, promotes condensation inside the boat, and reduces the sound deadening and insulating of the hull if you don't put something comparable back in. If this were my project, (which it isn't), I would scrape the loose paint as best you can, but don't worry about all the old glue and just put new carpet in. If you do want to get all the old glue off, I have read that 3M makes an adhesive remover that works reasonably well on it. It may even be called 3M adhesive remover; a quick google search on removing boat carpeting will probably find it for you. Spider cracks in old gelcoat are pretty common and not necessarily indicative of structural issues. Sunlight will glow through even pretty thick fiberglass. Some sailboats from the 70's actually used a raw fiberglass hatch as a kind of diffused skylight for the V-berth. All that said, backing plates on heavily stressed fittings like a cleat or windlass and thick fender washers on others are never a bad idea. If the washers are are sinking into the fiberglass, that may mean the core between the layers of fiberglass has gotten wet. Depending how bad it is and your taste for DIY, this can be anything from a spot repair to a full-blown re-core. The wet wood in your overhead should be a pretty straightforward repair; that oscillating saw will be great for cutting away the old glass. Then just pull out the sodden wood, encapsulate some new wood in resin to prevent rot in the future, then glue it in and glass over it.

    Like with ANY other remodel job, whether it be a traditional home or a little yellow boats, you must plan to include periodic crying, cursing, hysterical laughing and/or drinking times. Questioning one’s sanity, contemplating life in a circus as an alternative and watching movies involving the pros and cons of insurance fraud are normal.
    But when you’re finished with one of those times, replace all that in your mind with a picture of yourself tootling peacefully down a canal on a beautiful day, waving at folks on the tow path from your lovely little yellow darling. Keep cracking on, we’ve got your back!

    After stripping back 2 boat interiors now, I found a wire wheel, ideally in a grinder or otherwise a drill the best tool to remove the old adhesive, steel for more aggressive cleaning and brass for more delicate areas. I'd also definitely recommend removing all the through hull fixings and resealing them, once the new carpet is in you will not get another opportunity without making a mess of your new linings 👍🏼

    Hello David, a couple of things I think the name for the plastic you were thinking of is Formica. Home stores like Homebase should have it and places that make cabinets often have it and as you are looking for a small piece they may have an off cut they might sell or even give you. My suspicion is the core that is rotting is balsa wood. When fiberglass boats were made early on the decks were often a sandwich of glass top and bottom and balsa between. A lot of folks here rather than removing will let it dry out and then harden it with thinned epoxy resin. To dry it they will drill holes below and run a dehumdifier.

    • @jacksmith6068
      @jacksmith6068 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      For the panel, you might want to look inti Lexan. It is a plastic like material that you can cut with a saw, sand down, and I believe it might be what you would want.

      In North America, we call the plastic Plexiglass. It comes in various widths and is available at most hardware/home building stores.

    • @emmajacobs5575
      @emmajacobs5575 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Formica is usually a really thin material, used as a decorative/waterproof surface laminated onto thicker wood/chipboard (as in kitchen cupboards or worktops) - not really suitable for a switch panel.
      I think what David is looking for is probably acrylic or high impact polystyrene.

    • @Mike-pi6pu
      @Mike-pi6pu 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @@jacksmith6068l believe Lexan was a trade name for plexiglass. In the UKlands we call it Perspex which used to be available in DIY stores… Easy to work but l suggest not removing the protective paper until you’re done filling or drilling as it’s easy to scratch too. It used to come in various colours but if clear simply apply a coloured film to what will be the rear surface. And don’t over tighten any fixings you use else you’ll get stress cracks. That said, l last used it decades ago. Other choices could be HDPE from an old chopping board or polycarbonate. Have fun. Yes, a Melamine or Formica like material would work but you’d need an outdoor or marine grade.

    • @andrewfyakim525
      @andrewfyakim525 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Formica is/was a 'brand name' for plastic laminates that were primarily used for kitchen and bathroom counter tops. The plastic laminates/Formica was glued to a substrate (usually plywood or particle-board) using contact cement. It is fairly durable, but prone to scratching by sharp objects.... It is not as popular now as it was in the 1970's - 1990's....

    "Plexiglass" is one thing you can find small sheets of for the plaque behind your electrics board and you may find it in yellow. "Sintra" is another material which comes in different thicknesses and is used for outdoor signage, usually black or white. You may have been thinking of "Formica" but I've only seen this in thin 1mm sheets. Medium Density Overlay "MDO" Plywood comes in various thicknesses and again is used for outdoor signage. It has a resin treated Kraft paper coating. Comes in brown. But takes paint very nicely.
    Not for your panel but something to think about for for other applications is "AdvanTech" Subflooring. It's a waterpoof sheet made out of flakes of wood. It comes in 5/8" and 3/4". I like the industrial look of it and have used it for kitchen cabinet doors. It comes in two varieties - Sheathing & Flooring. The Flooring has one side sanded. I sanded it anyway to get the manufacturers decals off.
    I've used all of these materials.

    Where holes have been drilled through the fibreglass to attach the external metalwork, I'd suggest adding fibreglass patches to the inside (assuming you have access!) with the patches getting progressively smaller. That gives more of a feathered edge and will minimise any future cracking. If you JUST add a washer, the load WILL be spread but the hard edges of the washer will be the new stress points as the fibreglass is so thin. The patches will give increased thickness and as they don't need to be pretty it's probably a good way of practicing your fibreglassing skills!
    An alternative to plastic putty is to use resin thickened with polyfibres as you're basically filling holes WITH fibreglass giving a more uniform structure.

    • @jacksons1010
      @jacksons1010 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Agree. The flexing and cracking tells us the glass fibers have been broken, so a repair with “doublers” of fiberglass patching is essential. Then use a larger metal plate with no sharp edges whatsoever, and bed that to the fiberglass patch using the plastic padding or similar.

  • @todddunn945

    As to the plastic, you can buy a piece of Lexan (polycarbonate) Most home centers carry it in small bits. I would opt for 3mm thick or so to get adequate stiffness. To get the color you want, paint the back side of the clear plastic sheet.

  • @jonnbraman967
    @jonnbraman967 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    If Plastic Padding is an automotive product (rather than marine) be aware that some fillers in such materials can still absorb water, less than ideal for a boat. You can make the same thing by buying fillers and mixing your own. Or buy a marine version with non-absorbable fillers. You can also add resin colour pigments to the ‘white” to get any colour you want. Best to coat such sandable fillers with gelcoat (waxed) to ensure better water resistance.

    There are glue dissolvers for the hard to get-to places. If you are going to re-cover it all, you only need to get the loose stuff off, getting to bare fiberglass is a fools errand. When i was in yacht construction all screw penetrations of the hull were backed up with a block of 3/4" plywood, fiberglassed in. Hand rails need less robust back-up plates than mooring cleats.

    15:27 a tip here Dave, try and get hold of some yellow dye, and add to the mixture, this will take some experimentation, because some dyes don't mix well with composite solutions?
    Or when you have applied the ~Plastic Padding~ (I totally agree over the name) immediately paint the surface with Twiggy Yellow paint, this should mix with the surface of the plastic padding, and if you are deft in your application, will harden (might take a lot longer) and leave the surface that lovely ~Dame Lesley Hornby Lawson~ yellow.

    When you fiberglass the replacement for the wet wood, consider adding a layer or two of fiberglass where bolts go through the deck.
    Plastic sheets, try acrylic or plexiglass sheets.

The surfprep has a foam pad sandpaper interface that works on curves. It also has a vacuum that turns on and off when you turn on the sander. Sadly, it is not cheap. But, it is a lovely, lovely useful power tool, beloved by woodworkers everywhere

    the plastic i use on my 22' Birchwood is called Perspex you can pick this up in all sorts of sizes & some different colours too, you can buy a special adhesive for it too called TENSOL 12 Acrylic Adhesive but be very careful as it is very dangerous so always use a mask
    You can bend Perspex if you supply heat to it with a heat gun so you can bend it around corners

    As to the thinness of the fiberglass, we had a sailboat with a small cabin. In the cabin at the waterline, inside of a cabinet under the stove/sink arrangement when the sun was shining on that side and that the right angle you could see a shadow of the water as it flowed past the hull. It was kind of neat.

    Hello David, very nice work and heartiest of congratulations on completing your book! Surely it will be a boon for anyone looking to get started. I've seen a few people mentioning Formica but I don't think that's what you have or what you want. It's brittle and fickle to work with. I think what you have there may be a piece of acrylic plastic sheet, commonly called Plexiglass here although there are many other brands. From the way it wrinkles up under the screw heads, what you have now might even be a clear acrylic sheet with a yellow vinyl sticker on it. Either way, acrylic is very sturdy and, with a light sanding, can be painted any color. You could do an exact matching color for your boat even. Cheers!

Those seats for instance look exceptionally good to me, maybe its just the video. That plastic behind the control panel is just a standard square car number plate, you won't have any trouble getting a replacement, you can get the size made to order. Light through fiberglass is normal, it is translucent after all.

    Couple thoughts -
    Great idea getting the soggy wood out. Consider treating the new piece with epoxy before bedding it into new fibreglass.
    Regarding the goop in the can - it may be possible to tint it with the appropriate amount of Twiggy Yellow as you mix in the hardener. Going to be a bit of trial and error to get the exact shade. And finally - as a safety nerd of the first order it’s great to see you so well kitted out for sanding. Carry on sir!
