      Your house is beautiful, but a bit stark for me. As an artist, I would like more art and photographs and plants, especially considering the wonderful light you enjoy from so many windows. I also note that you have heaps of storage space, which I don't have, since I live in a very small apartment. Therefore it's easy for you to put your things away, out of sight. For instance, you have so much cupboard space in the kitchen and bathroom, you can put everything away. What do you suggest for those of us who live in small apartments with limited cupboard and closet space? And yes, I am working on keeping less of everything, but still ...

      Yes I really did. I think you have a beautiful home 😊💕 I just wonder. My so called minimalist Journey is all about just having the things me and my husband need. Since our last move, we have done a real good job. My dear hubby has a lot of old stuff. His profession made him collect a lot and he’s been documented a lot by digitizing. But this is a slow process. He really need to save this. But I think it´s goding so slow. To day it’s 1,5 years we moved and his stuff is all over his working rom and some in the living rom. I just wonder how should I deal with the fact that we have such different speeds with what needs to be cleared away? I understand it is a process.

    While I know that I'll never be a minimalist, I do really appreciate your videos because I do hold onto things that I don't really want because of who gave it to me and I have found that your videos are helping me let go of that guilt, which I have pretty much carried my entire like. I also had things of mine that I treasured donated without my permission when I was a kid, and that still hurts all these years later for a number of reasons, even if it was a true misstep of my parents, it has had lasting affects on me and how I hold onto things. I love how much color you do have in your home, that is definitely one of the things I first noticed!

      My husband's parents threw away everything he owned whenever they moved--multiple times. He gets really upset & even angry if I want to get rid of things that he hasn't even looked at in years, so decluttering our home is a real struggle for me. Apparently I'm so thick-headed that I never put two & two together until I read your comment. I just gained a whole new understanding and sympathy for his feelings on this. Thank you!!

    The story of grandma's secret quilt had me sobbing. That is precious! If you haven't already, learn mending so when an inevitable hope happens, it can be quickly patched and ready to go back to use. I love that you have it price of place on your bed, not storing it for "later." 💗

    • @AtoZenLife
      @AtoZenLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think I would be able to do basic mends, but I would love to be able to learn, visible mending, so I can make it cool!

      @@AtoZenLife Yes, visible mending gives even more character, history! I have an apron from my grandma with visible mending, and when I had it framed in a shadow box (along with her wedding veil, recipes, photos, etc) I specifically asked the framer to keep the mending visible! It was pink mending thread on a blue apron. So sweet!

    Marissa you’re my favourite minimalist TH-camr . Your home is beautiful and cozy. Btw this is my 4th year trying to persuade my husband to declutter the garage . It’s soo full of tools he accumulated over the years and others from his dad who passed away 15 years ago. I know he doesn’t use all of them, especially now that him and I are going through surgeries after surgeries ( we are in our 60’s ) . Anyways I’m hoping he’ll be able to get rid of them sooner than later. Thanks for the tour.

      I've been minimalist for many years, and my husband has occasionally let me help him do small reorganizations. But just this summer, he came to ask me to help him to do a major purge of the garage because he's seen how much easier the rest of our house is to maintain, and how easy it is to find things in areas I'm responsible for maintaining.

I’m in my deepest layer of decluttering and I have to go so slow to process my emotions trapped/stores in them and in me. It’s such a beautiful organic process - feeling so much painful stuff = liberating.

    I’ve always thought your home was beautiful and the accent colors that you use really “pop” within the spaces. I love the tree & fog photo in your living room! I grew up in the woods in northern Minnesota and foggy mornings are my favorite time to walk. I’ve been on a decluttering journey for five years. It was one of those things where I got fed up with myself. I realized when the kids moved out and I was living alone, that I was the one in control of the stuff. I decluttered 40% of my belongings in the first loop through my home. When I purchased my current home, I got rid of another 20%. Three years later I am still finding items to declutter. I finally realized that to keep something in a box, in a closet, was not serving me or that item any value. If I was not going to use it or display it, there was no reason to keep it. I do have seasonal items in storage along with home decor that I rotate throughout the year (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall). It has allowed me to keep more home decor but my home is not cluttered with everything out on display. My next big job is going through all my family photos. I, too, lost my parents when I was a teenager & young adult. The only thing I have of my childhood is photos. Once organized, I will sit down with my kids to go through them, figure out who wants what and when they will get it. Some photos will have no meaning to them and I am okay with the kids disposing of those when the time comes. It gives me my own sense of peace knowing these things are taken care of.

    Marissa, I am so glad I found your channel that I've been binge-watching it for days while I exercise! I have been in a steady decluttering mode for some time now, but I started a simple, fun system just this year since I now work a full-time job. Here it is (very simple): whatever day of the month it is, that is how many items/emails/digital photos, etc. that I let go of. For example, if it is the 10th of the month, I remove 10. On the first, I remove only 1. This doesn't sound like much, but a 30-day month = 465 items! This is so simple and quick that I thought I'd share it here for anyone who might feel overwhelmed at the thought of minimalism. Thank you so much for sharing your life with the world. Your channel is the best I've found yet on this subject!

I appreciate you showing that you do actually own and use all the regular things that everyone uses for day to day life (like kid's video games), and you simply put them away while not in use. Thank you so much for this video and tour of your beautiful home. We moved 6 years ago when we retired to a 900 sq ft condo. We sold or donated most of our furniture as most of our wood furniture was too big for each room. One of the best buys that we made was getting a double bed from IKEA that lifted up on hinges and could store our blankets, linens, towels, etc. We got more creative and reviewed everything we had brought and still downsized as we realized we did not need a lot of our stuff. We had our belongings in storage for six months until our condo building was built so we had lived without many things over that time and it helped us refocus on what we really needed. I was a hoarder as I had 4 boys so kept a lot of clothes, sports equipment, toys etc for each age group. Now, I find I have no problem saying "NO" to bringing more stuff into our space. Usually it is to "replace" an item. I've been watching your videos quite often and always learn something new. Thanks again.

    Your ways of curating what you love/need is inspiring.
    Last fall I moved from my 2 storey ~950 sq home of 19 years (plus garage) - to my daughter's back room for 6 months whilst my 600 sq for Ohana in their back yard was being built (yea!!)
    My 'in the meantime' storage unit needs another round of bringing things over and sorting through - and I am loving living with things I love, and a you say, be company ready in minutes!!
    My 18 year old granddaughter just moved 1/2 mile away to her dorm room, and the 12 year olds are revelling in having their own rooms- and purges/ of their own. My son- in law is great at tidying, repurposing and passing things on! He constructed the catio that's making my kitty happier about confinement, and soon a greenhouse! (From kits)

    What a beautiful home you have Marissa!! Berlin is such a vibrant, multicultural city! Been there years ago, loved it! I'm italian and I love ancient buildings so much! I think you built a very happy life for yourself and your family, and love the fact that you and your husband are teaching the kids how to tidy up and be organized and minimalist themselves, it's the best education they can get in life I believe. About the white walls, in Italy we love white walls because that allows more light to come into the rooms and everything seems more bright and spacious; also we do have high ceilings ourselves, especially in old buildings (I live in a 50 y.o condo) and I absolutely love that.

    ❤ Thank you for the minimalist house tour. You have a beautiful home. I have been watching your channel for a few years now and I have found your suggestions very helpful.
    I had a few bookcases full of books, and I have downsized it to one bookcase at this time.
    And I have a grandson who is now a year old and I am keeping his toys at my home minimal and it is working wonderfully. Seems his favorite things are books and balls, which definitely keeps my inventory down. You motivate me and I appreciate it. Thank you for all you do.

    Thank you for sharing your experience! Ever since I found your TH-cam channel a couple of months ago, I have become more mindful of what we own and buy. My husband is also Chinese and grew up in poverty. I am Japanese and admire Marie Kondo😊 We live in the US where people are, let’s say, competitive about everything. My family is in the process of simplifying our life because we want to feel peace at home and be ourselves inside out. Thank you Marisa!

    so nice 😍these old homes have something special in them (I´ve always wanted to live in similar one, never had the opportunity, as in the end I bought flat in 1980's building next to Warsaw)

    I agree that having simple storage for kids helps. When my daughter was little we had an IKEA unit with fabric boxes. Each box has a kind of toy e.g. Lego. She mostly just played with one box at a time and it was easy to clear up. Before Christmas we decluttered and gave away toys so she had at least one box empty for presents she received. Since she had grown out of some toys this was not a problem.

    Thanks to you I’ve manage to clear out 6 large moving boxes of books (it’s 2/3s of my bookshelves) so I have room for the books I do wanna keep AND throw away more than a half of my shoes, that only took closet space. I might not be a minimalist like your family, but for me this is a huge step toward being happier with my self, family and the things I keep. From my childhood I learned to hold so tight to my things that I today feel they possessed me rather I possess them and letting things “go” is a big process for me. Thank you! ❤ (And yes, this might seem like a baby step for others but to me this is huge!)

    ❤ We also live in an old home! Almost 150 yrs old, with super squeaky original floors and super high 13’ ceiling with plaster work! I’m so happy I’ve let go of lots and it’s let tour homes character shine. Still peeling off the onion layers and not sure if I will ever achieve a home as simplified as yours, but I’m going to keep at it. Makes life with 2 youngish kids so much easier!

    Hello! I’m from the Philippines and your videos have inspired me so much! We now live in a studio type room for some reason and if not because of minimalism, there is no way we are able to live in a room and still have enough space for me, my husband and our baby.

    Thank you for inviting us into your home, it's beaufiful! I love old European apartments with wooden flooring, closed kitchen, high ceiling and big windows, and I really like how you've made it your own. I actually have the same laundry hamper as you! Haha
    One thing I wonder though, because you have a lot of big empty volumes and acoustically reflective surfaces in your home: do you find it to be a bit echoey, or are the blinds and strategically placed rugs enough to dampen?

    You have a lovely home. I would ask you to consider adding more art work or family photos to your walls. It would greatly embellish what you've done and cement memories for the children, especially those of family members who live far away. If you do this, I'd be very interested to see how you go about choosing your frames!

    Beautiful home! I find your home an inspiration to create calming spaces. I hear from my friends in Germany the weather can get very hot and most homes don’t have air conditioning. What do you do to stay cool during the summer months?

    • @AtoZenLife
      @AtoZenLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have a whole system! Because the walls are so thick, it doesn’t get hot inside as fast. I wake up early and immediately open the windows and doors to let the coolest air in. Later, when it starts to get hot, we close the windows, doors, and blinds and trap the cool air inside. We also have a dance in the front and the back. Hope this helps ✌️

    I love your home. It's so beautiful and simple. I'm working step by step to get that simple comfortable home. My husband loves the idea. We hold on to things we don't need and take up so much space. I remember when I did live simply. It was so easy to keep clean. Now it's just so frustrating. I work harder now then before. Must live that simple life again and enjoy more free time.
