    I've had the good fortune of watching Luke play live a couple times, the first in Spokane, Washington from the 5th row with my two young kids, who both think Steve walks on water! The second time was with just me and my wife and we sat front row VIP, right in front of Luke the entire night with a sound check, meet and greet, etc. Was a great evening all around and sitting just feet from the master performing his craft with those two Bogner amps going strong, man it just doesn't get much better than that. I've enjoyed him and Toto from the very beginning back in 1978 when I'd play some of the piano licks in jazz band during breaks where I was normally a lead trumpet player. When I told Luke and Porcarro about that they got a really good chuckle out of it and thanked me for being a fan for so long. Thanks for breaking it down. Now I'll have to work on it on my electric guitar!

  • @schnowtza
    @schnowtza 5 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    Everything about this song is "feel". Each member of Toto is world-class, and as a drummer/multi-instrumentalist, Rosanna has fascinated me since it was brand new on the radio. The late Jeff Porcaro's groove sets the tone (I've heard many a pro drummer attempt to recreate the magic of the drum groove...to no avail), and Lukather's playing is just amazing. One of my all-time favorite guitar leads...and you guys just demonstrated why!

    • @michaelanderson2881
      @michaelanderson2881 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Keith Carlock is the only person I ever saw recreate Roseanna so well that I didn't miss the original. But then since he's not a true rock drummer, a lot of Toto's heavier stuff passed him by, whereas Jeff Porcaro could do it all. Carlock is great, of course, but it takes him and Simon Phillips (also great) to fully capture all of Porcaro's range.

    • @schnowtza
      @schnowtza ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michaelanderson2881 I agree 100%. Carlock is a monster drummer, and of of my favorites. Phillips is a legendary drummer (I went to a clinic of his in 1993, he really opened my young mind to some things), but neither alone can do what Porcaro did.

    My Grandson has taken to the drums with great enthusiasm. I played this for him, among many other songs, of late and he is hearing the structure now, not just the whole.
    I spun 'What is Hip?'- Tower of Power, and blew his mind. All of the sudden he understands why Grampa listens to what Grampa listens to. Next stop? 'Steely Dan.' But he is only ten and I hope he doesn't ask me about the name of the band.

    • @yetanotherbassdude
      @yetanotherbassdude 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hehe, yeah I think "it's a name from an old book" is probably as much of an explanation as I'd want to give to a ten year old!
      That's still really heartening to hear your grandson's discovering a way into all the good old stuff through learning an instrument like that, and it's giving you and him something to bond over as well. What'll be really cool too is that once he starts developing his own tastes he may well start introducing you to some stuff too! Steve Vai these days often talks about how his sons who are in their twenties have introduced him to so many new artists that he'd never have listened to on his own, especially guys like Plini who have built so much of their following through social media.

    This is without a doubt my favorite guitar channel that's focused solely on playing (as opposed to playing and gear). Not only is it the fact that EVERYTIME the video starts I know that I'm going to be seeing Tim playing a great guitar piece, but I know he's going to have an ear to ear smile while he's playing. I don't know the man personally, so I can only go by what I see, but Tim comes across as that guy who even after decades playing and having the opportunity to play with so many different and talented artist, he still does it because he just loves playing.
    I think looking back that the desire and focus on playing in a band and becoming a rock star didn't stick with me as long as most musicians I know. When I was about 19-20 I shared my apartment with a friend who was 7-8 years older than me and was the neighborhood "guitar God." (and if you weren't sure if that was an accurate belief, all you had to do was ask him and he'd tell you that it was true 😉). It was great because there were always really good musicians hanging out there. There was a guy Pete who was more producer and recording engineer, he had a great studio set up in his house. This was in the Early mid-90s, when it wasn't as easyto do as it is now, I know that he had well over $100K invested in it, but it would probably not go much more over $10k now. He had a couple friends who were pretty successful sessions players. They played on a bunch of albums and toured with some big acts. I remember that it only took hanging out with them a few times to cause me to pretty much drop any interest in the whole rock star thing, It just sounded so much more appealing. Besides sessions players usually being there best musicians in any band they sat in with, they got to constantly play completely different genres of music, and with a slew of artists. That convinced me that being an in demand studio guy for years and years just sounded so much more appealing than being in one really popular band which typically has a shelf life of 7 or 8 years.
    Players like Tim, Pete Thorn, Jim Campilongo are fortunate, and talented.

Knowing his stuf and from the ones he listened to. This song and indeed, Lukather was so sublime that one solo wasn't enough. And for me, at least, the outro solo was the very pinnacle.

    Lukather made incredible, expressive storylines with his solos on the Toto albums. This is also one of my favs. I do two things differently at the end; I get the high note by bending the E string with my ring finger then fretting it with the pinky at the top of the bend. Also, Lukather made good use of his vibrato/tremarm-I employ that to get vibrato at the top of the solo. Seems to work well...

    Great analysis. Luke has brought life to so many songs in the 70s and 80s that wouldn't have been so great with out his killer feel

    First time I saw Toto live - Paich, Lukather, M.Porcaro & Phillips in 1996 - I had no idea musicians could sound that good. Best concert ever.

    I attended a guitar "clinic" at Rich Hunt's Guitar Shop in Escondido, CA in the 90s taught by the great Wayne Johnson and he played that solo as an example which was so far over most of our heads... But we appreciated the thought.
