Fellow old geezer foam sculptor here. I do a lot of foam sculptures mostly for movies. For coating medium sized sculptures we use a waterborne material called Aqua-resin. Easy to use but it ain't cheap. An easy and strong alternative is a combination of Durham's water putty and joint compound. Both work fine on urethane or styrofoam. Lovin' the channel. One more suggestion is a work apron. My crewmates make fun of me but it work great.

Besides the epoxy and 2 part urethane, you can paint on a UV cured resin for a hard coat. The advantage is that it's only 1 part so you don't have to estimate how much material you need. Paint it on then cure it with a UV light or sunlight. It's available in a wide variety of colors.

Oh my god Robert I'm so glad to see you! I've been subscribed to you for a LONG LONG time but the past 8 months I haven't seen you posting anything, so today I went looking through "The Craftsman" old colab video with you to find the channel again and somehow I got UNSUBSCRIBED, but boy I'm happy as a lark cause I've been sitting on my a** all day catching up on the past 8 months of videos! Thank you for giving me content all day today!

Funny you should say that you haven't been getting anything he posted for the last 8 months. I don't know what is going on with TH-cam, but I don't get notified for most of the channels that I am subscribed to. One of them is my son's, and he has 2.5 million subscribers. You would think they would take care of these people. Glad I just found this channel though.

I bookmarked my TH-cam subscription page, and then I pinned it in my browser so it's always displayed prominently. I never miss a single video from the accounts I follow. It help's thwart TH-cam's evil intent! Thwartin' is cool

A lot of tabletop mini terrain makers use xps foam but this work here to. The use modpodge and acrylic paint and that makes a good sealer it has a little tougher shell than just some of the other dentaboe sealers you showed her but not as a shell. The added paint show what you covered already and you don’t loose hardly any details

I've never gotten to carve in Urethane, but I've carved large stuff in Styrofoam (mostly brick and stone texturing for wall coverings. I was lucky enough that the carvings were sprayed with truck bed liner for coating. It goes on hot, so a little of the detail was lost, but that coating was nearly indestructible. I can't wait to carve some sculpting foam. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
PS - there's always going to be somebody who's bothered or offended about something. Let 'em complain. All they're doing is adding to the comment interaction and building on your channel metrics. Also, I'd love to see some of your older work in the casinos and restaurants. If you have a link to some photos, that would be awesome.

I have a quick question how can I make a foam design to resin? Is there a material that I need to cover the foam to create a mold then use the mold to use resin casting? I have a design but a foam is very breakable. I don't know how to make my foam resistance resin heat because the chemicals combine with resin A and B reaction creates heat and it seems that heat will melt the foam so I want to ask how to do it if is possible. Thanks waiting on your response.

Hi, I would like to know if you have a foam. And want to make more pieces of that foam can you do resin casting? If so, what is the technique and material to make that happen? I like resin casting because it captures a lot of details for making molds. That's the reason I have a foam because it has many details and I would like that to be transferred the details into the resin mold. Can someone help me please? Or send me a video about it?

Oh look... Spray paint doesn't melt it. I don't know why anyone said that in the last video comments. The foam is urethane. Spray paint isn't going to melt it. Probably the same person who thinks carving skulls equals the decline of society.
Thanks for the follow up video Robert. I make marionettes carving the foam and coating it with urethane resin. I have used fiberglass resin before too. I think it's polyester. It works, but urethane is better.

    • @nekrataali
      @nekrataali 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

It depends on the foam and the spray paint. If a spray paint uses enamel, it will absolutely melt Styrofoam and XPS foam. Latex, oil, and acrylic paints won't.
In this video, actual primer is used on the foam and primer doesn't use the same chemicals as spray paint. Primer is explicitly made for this purpose. It seals a surface and won't cause any corrosion.

    • @RandiRain
      @RandiRain 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@nekrataaliSpray primer has solvents in it and spray paint doesn't. Spray primer would be more likely to dissolve something than spray paint. The solvents are what melts. A simple google search will show you. Also, we are not talking about styrofoam are we? We are talking about urethane foam. And spray paint or spray primer will not dissolve it. Sorry, but you are wrong.

Sorting the products from healthiest to least healthy, considering robustness as a tiebreaker:
    1. *Beeswax:*
    - *Healthiness:* Very safe, natural, and non-toxic.
    - *Robustness:* Moderate. Compatible with rubber and resin, but may not be as durable as synthetic coatings.
    2. *Shellac:*
    - *Healthiness:* Natural and generally safe, with minimal toxicity.
    - *Robustness:* Good for sealing porous materials, but not as robust as some synthetic options.
    3. *Acrylic Gesso:*
    - *Healthiness:* Generally safe for use with minimal toxicity.
    - *Robustness:* Versatile and can be robust depending on application, but less durable compared to epoxies and urethanes.
    4. *Aliphatic Resin Glue:*
    - *Healthiness:* Relatively safe, though may cause minor irritation.
    - *Robustness:* Good as a sealer, widely available, but not as strong as some other coatings.
    5. *Spray Primer (e.g., Rustoleum Ultra Cover, Krylon, Ace brands):*
    - *Healthiness:* Moderate risk due to fumes and VOCs.
    - *Robustness:* Provides a good, even coat, and works well for various applications.
    6. *All-Purpose Primer (e.g., Bullseye by Zinsser):*
    - *Healthiness:* Similar risks to spray primers with VOCs and fumes.
    - *Robustness:* Denser and potentially more robust than spray primers.
    7. *Five-Minute Epoxy:*
    - *Healthiness:* Can cause irritation; fumes can be harmful.
    - *Robustness:* Very effective and durable as a coating.
    8. *Urethane Resins:*
    - *Healthiness:* Can be irritating and potentially harmful due to chemical composition.
    - *Robustness:* Very robust, sets up quickly and is great for rapid mold cycling.
    9. *Cyanoacrylates (Super Glues):*
    - *Healthiness:* Highest risk due to strong fumes and potential for skin bonding.
    - *Robustness:* Creates a very effective seal quickly, but with significant health risks.
Note that the video tests two urethane materials Silpak Quickcast and Silpak Trowel-On.
Disclaimer: I utilized ChatGPT 4 (10 Nov 23) to condense the video
transcript into a summary. I employed Prompt 1 to generate
timestamped bullet lists. I then used Prompt 2 to organize these lists
into sections with titles. The summary was manually formatted using
TH-cam comment markup. I also asked GPT to sort the coating products
    using prompt 3.
Prompt 1: "Generate a bullet list summary, including starting
    timestamps for each point."
Prompt 2: "Split the following bullet list into sections. Create
section titles. Keep timestamps for the bullets. Use this format for
titles: *title*. Keep bullets that you deem important to the story."
Prompt 3: "sort healthiest product first. if two products are similar
in health list the more robust coating first."
