Hello everyone! A few days ago a viewer commented and stated that the SA-800Gmk2 heat sink was fake and that a business by the name of mfc network does mods to get C800G replicas closer to the real Sony Mic. So let’s explore.
First, I looked around to find out what a heat sink truly is and what it does (Heatsink - what is a heatsink? how it works, and types available & en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_sink). This should make for great bed time reading because it goes a lot further than what recording/mixing engineers need to know. But if you’d like to know, have at it! In essence, heat sink is usually a metallic device designed to transfer heat. Based on this information, the SA-800Gmk2 fits that description.
According to MFC Network, there’s suppose to be a liquid that helps in keeping the tube at optimal temp. This is where the challenge began. After researching heat sink liquids which did not yield results fit for the Sony C800G, I researched what Sony described for their heat sink device which is a “Peltier-based cooling system” which also did not yield results. Last I researched Sony C800G repair and stumbled on to this: www.audioservicemanuals.com/s/sony/sony-c/12626158-sony-c-800-g-service-manual. Yes! The original service manual to the Sony C800G.
So, what does it take to make an actual C800G Replica? Let’s acknowledge first that the reason this mic is very expensive is because of its over-engineered aspirations to be an ultra low-noise high output tube microphone. That was probably true back when this mic was first manufactured. Not quite these days with better technology (look into the new Manley Microphone Power Supplies). Back to the subject at hand, to make a proper C800G Replica one needs:
    1. A K-67 Type Capsule. Stam features a Braingasm K-67 Capsule. ☑️
    2. An Output Transformer. Stam Audio Features a Sowter Transformer. Not necessarily a replica of the Sony Transformer but no slouch of a transformer either.
    3. A Huge Capacitor immediately following the Capsule. Stam Audio ☑️.
    4. Tube! Here’s where there’s a discrepancy. Sony utilizes a Sony 6AU6 Tube that is approx 50mm in length which is larger than the 40mm 6AU6 Power Supply Tube. According to MFC Network, the larger tube has more gain/amplification. However, finding an off-brand 50mm 6AU6 Tube is pretty difficult so good luck.
    5. The famous heat sink. Sony utilizes “ a unique Peltier-based cooling system”. This is a copper foil on top of the tube (not included in Stam Mic) and below the tube base, a semi-conductor to transfer heat to the heat sink (Stam Audio features this).
    6. MFC Network makes a claim of a liquid coolant. For the life of me, I could not figure out what they meant so I am speculating they meant the thermal paste on the tube base (see this YT Video: th-cam.com/video/hgqod9jQObo/w-d-xo.html). Stam Audio does not include this.
So all in all, you’d be better off with a Stam Audio SA-800Gmk2 since the mic is built a lot closer to the Sony costing much less than Sony and a bit less than Golden Age. You would also be better off purchasing and doing most of the mods yourself except the capsule. This revelation only solidified my trust in Stam Audio and raises confidence that my SA-800Gmk2 is really not that far off from the original when it comes to build quality. Only time will tell how close Stam came to Sony so stay tuned and subscribe.
All this to say, the Stam Audio SA-800Gmk2 Heat Sink is completely real, mechanical and operational. Please check out my FB page for the picture showing the semi-conductor. facebook.com/daniel.redd.9887

Thank you for the videos, I sometimes watching them, but you're the pure example of the man creating content just for sharing emotions and having fun. I respect that.

Thank you for your kind words TakeItEasy. I wish I could create more content but there’s a format in which I’d like to do it to make a better learning process and more effective. That’s the goal in which I’m moving towards but because I’m a working man, a father and a family man, I just can’t devote the time other creators can. So, I’ll just take it step by step until we reach that first goal line and then move towards the next at a faster rate. I hope you can stick around.

No problem Drake, glad I was able to help. Just know, delivery times vary and sometimes you may have to wait months (I waited a year and half for this mic). In the end, I believe it is worthwhile but then again, I am pretty patient. If you need to reach them, email them: info@stamaudio.com. Can take a few days but they will get back to you! Otherwise, best of luck and hope you enjoy your new mic when it arrives.

I had to order mine from Golden Age through rad distribution

See if you can get it from Stam Audio. I believe Mics with Power Supplies have a “combination” and it has to match your mic. There’s also a company called REDCO, they can make custom multi-pin cables and they should be able to provide a better clarification. If they do, come back and let us know please. I wouldn’t mind upgrading the cable.

How long does it take to get?

    • @reddmusiclab

This particular microphone took me over a year to receive. At best, Stam Audio is inconsistent with delivery times. Some gear, is delivered in a few months as promised and some, take quite a while. However, once you receive it, a common phrase is consistently repeated: “It was worth the wait!”
I realize it sounds corny but at least from my perspective, it’s true!

Looks cool but I'm sorry my patience is not that great. There's no reason you should have to wait a year and a half or something you purchased. I like audio scape because you order and they ship fast you cannot order what is not in stock. It seems like you pay for your item and with your money they make an item for someone else and ship it then someone else pays for theirs then they ship yours and the cycle keeps going. I hear nothing but good things about their products but us as customers should not have to go through that they even need to fix it or people need to stop buying from them.

I hear ya Hottraks but same could be said about expensive ProAudio gear. Us as customers should not have to pay over “x” amount of dollar. At the end of the day, us as customers have the choice to say yay or nay and many of us customers have said a resounding “yay” to Stam despite his timing. AudioScape is cool but they don’t have mics. Again, the beauty is that is ALL up to us the customers.

i 100% agree that it’s really not cool to have people waiting that long for a product they paid for. there really is no excuse. the mic is obviously worth all the hype and is amazing. but plain and simple there is no reason whatsoever it would take over a year to make a mic from scratch after you paid for the parts. that’s insane.
