  • In this video we will be learning about Raft foundations, also known as Mat foundations via 3D animation. They are a type of shallow foundations. Types of Raft foundation will be shown which are concrete raft with drops, raft with beams / ribs and raft with piles.
    In the later part we will see reinforcement detailing in raft foundation. It will cover the top and bottom mesh, punching shear reinforcement in the form of shear links or shear studs, additional reinforcement, column stirrups and vertical reinforcement.

    Where would you consider a raft foundation with shallow (3'ft) column footings?
    I have some loamy acreage that does not experience frost EVER but some pretty good down pours periodically.

    With good design foundation we could apply green house advance green house agriculture teleporting food and supply , remote sensing using MAD, and counter seimic wave resonance prevent earthquake and also survive flooding

    Is there any thumb rule to decide whether what depth to consider for raft?

    • @StructuresExplained
      @StructuresExplained  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it depends on various factors like concrete strength used, column/wall load, soil properties, water uplift, reinforcement provided, punching shear, etc. In short, analysis is required to find depth of raft.

    Best sir . Plz tell me about drop or step in raft.

    • @StructuresExplained
      @StructuresExplained  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ajaz, drop below the columns resist the punching shear in the raft. Due to increased thickness locally, column will not punch inside raft. Additionally, drop increases positive moment capacity of the raft locally, whic means raft can take higher moments below the column. Hope this helps. :)

    You mention of shear reinforcement around column is nothing but beam connecting all the other column or something else.. someone explain

    • @StructuresExplained
      @StructuresExplained  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mohamed, the shear links or studs mentioned in the video are not of beam. For this video, column is directly resting on raft.

      @@StructuresExplained in shallow foundations we give plinth beams incase of raft there is no such beam connecting other columna all together ?

    • @StructuresExplained
      @StructuresExplained  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on design, if required raft can also have beams connecting column to column.

    4:00 if the above columns are of steel the lap reinforcement is not needed ???what you mean by that????

    • @StructuresExplained
      @StructuresExplained  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ali, in the video columns are of concrete and some part of reinforcement is left for lapping upper construction of columns. If the columns were of steel, there is no reinforcement and just a pedestal will be required at base.

    • @aliqadri4672
      @aliqadri4672 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StructuresExplained you mean if upper colum is type of steel I beam type or not concrete type then we dont need lapping bars and we only need below concrete column for pedestal.?????

    Do the piles below have to be in alignment with the columns ? Or can they be placed with equal spacing even if it doesn't align with the column placement ?
