My wife and I live in Sarasota close to this mall we go about every other week. Currently the Costco, theater, and JCPenney are the only locations left. Even the man cave/ pinball/pool game store has closed across the walkway from Costco. Plans are in the works to convert to apartments.
There has been a proposal to turn it into "Condos" of some kind. They have proposed a similar idea for the Port Charlotte Mall that is in the same boat. A lot of retail on Rt.41 has suffered as newer and larger facilities were built out by 75.
This mall was bought a few months ago by a development company. Plans include razing the mall but retaining JCP, Costco and the movie theatre as freestanding structures. A new open air lifestyle center will be built with restaurants and some shops. Additionally there will be apartments and office buildings added. Sarasota is booming right now and the mall’s location sets in a very desirable and upper income area, specifically Palmer Ranch.
This mall is a piece of Sarasota's history. So many fond memories there, from Babbages to Dream Machine. It's really a shame, but UTC, Covid, and Amazon killed this once booming social hub. RIP Sarasota Square Mall.
@@jm37024 I’m there now, finishing off a Costco pizza. JCPenny, AMC Theater, and Costco are all that remain, along with a small Taqueria and German food vendor in the foodcourt across from AMC. More and more of the mall’s getting taped off, although the Costco seems to be consistently filling one of their side parking lots.
All the plans to renovate are on track and I bet within 9 months the old structure will start coming down. Agree this area is booming and only 4 miles each way N and S to two world class beaches. It will be a premier place to live and shop.
Costco actually opened at Randhurst Mall, just before that place was demalled. I'm surprised they had an inside entrance here, since my memory of Randhurst(correct me if my memory is wrong), is that this Costco didn't have an inside entrance.
As a Sarasota native, this was the place to be on a Friday night growing up in the 2000’s. Everyone met up with their friends or crush here and would go on shopping sprees, and hit the AMC movie theater after. I’ve been since it’s become more empty, and it’s sad to see how deserted it is. Whatever this mall ends up becoming, it was a super nostalgic and memorable place to hangout at growing up as a teen.🤘🏼
I worked at the Babbage's in this mall. So many memories growing up here, seeing movies at both the inside and outside theater, eating at the Morrison's with my grandma, loitering in the arcade. It's kind of sad to see it in this state now.
This is so heartbreaking, as a family, we used to drive there from Venice with the kids, many times. Of course they’re all grown up now, and are young adults.
So sad I really like that mall and visited everytime we returned to Florida. I live in Sarasota in the early 90s and I worked as a maintenance man there in the mall around 90-91. Sad to hear it was closed.
Seeing this place I went to so often in the mid to late 2000s basically completely lifeless is horrifying in such a weird way. Last time I went there around 2018 the lack of Hot Topic, FYE, Gamestop and half of the food court had me confused and saddened but now. . . Man I don't know what to think.
This is one of the first dead mall videos that actually made me feel a bit melancholic. The first hot topic I had ever gone to was in this mall around 2006-07 ish, and being a tween-ager from Small Town FL, this was a big freaking deal. My best friend's family took us all to see Star Trek on opening night in that AMC in 09, and after a doctor's appointment one day, instead of taking me back to school, my mom let me drag her to see Ninja Assassin. (She didn't like it for some reason.) The last good memories I have of that place were in December of 2015, a few months after my dad passed, I ended up getting as many Christmas presents for my mom that I could afford at the time, and I took that same best friend from 09 with me to see the premiere of The Force Awakens. There was a Sbarro there that gave me a free slice of pizza once too. Thanks guys. Seeing Sarasota Square in this condition is just a monument to fading memories. Hopefully whichever firm bought this mall can turn it into a place where people can continue to make good memories, instead of watching something old fade away. I did actually return to Florida briefly last year, and took a trip to this mall, and had about the same experience as this video. I walked down each wing, visited the food court and saw the one open restaurant, wondered how the owner of the restaurant's money laundering scheme was going, and decided to bail. Thanks for all the good times, Sarasota Square. Thanks for the video, Andrew.
It's so sad every time I go there I want to cry. I raised my children in that area . We would walk there from our house. We used to go to the mall all the time. The internet ruined the lives of many sadly
I live in Sarasota, about 10 minutes away from this mall. A development company bought the mall/property. Just waiting for Sarasota County to give all the OKs to the developer..and it will be gone very soon..pathing the way for more condos I'm sure.
I live in Sarasota too, I hate how they keep building more condos for people from out of state to move in without building more businesses for us pre-existing locals to work for. They somehow don't understand that there already seemingly isn't enough jobs and the roads are always congested because of overpopulation. Lived here since I was born in 2001 but now I almost dream of moving away just to escape the stress of having to leave the house 40 minutes early just to go 10 minutes up the street because I get worried I'll be late from how nuts it's gotten.
I used to work at this mall. I would walk through the exact same entrance you did every 5 days a week. Walking in going to your right then the second store to your left was a best buy mobile. It still has that best buy blue there. I would open and close. Alot of kiosks through the middle of the hallways were there. The traffic was way different the last time I was there in 2018 working. Still not insane. I remember saying to myself, "This mall is slowly dying" my last few months there
It should be made into a housing community for a mix of medium and low income people. Large stores can be turned into multiple units. It could be a wonderful place for families, young singles, and retirees to live together. I imagine some stores would become doctors offices, a daycare center, grocery, etc. The common spaces could have various activities and spaces for social life. I'm not a developer, so I don't know if it's feasible, but if possible it could be the answer to our affordable housing problem. The excess parking lots could have more apartment buildings so the very long waiting list of HUD applicants could have their needs met, too. I have a vision of what it could be, but not the means to make it happen.
The wood store front at 4:46 used to be a starbucks. In the early 2000s my friends and I were hanging out there during summer and I stole a frappuccino that was on the counter lol.
Always loved indoor malls. If you go to Orlando there are two thriving indoor malls but yes there are struggling ones too. It's sad because it was part of my childhood.
UTC Mall basically killed all the local malls along with Amazon for most of the shopping. The Crossings at Siesta Key, DeSoto Mall and obviously Sarasota Square Mall are the largest that are quickly closing. I keep on hearing all the different possible use cases for some of these models, but we'll see.
Amazing video as always Andrew! Judging by commentary here I guess the arcade shut down as I recalled it still being open last I checked. Can you confirm?
So sad to see this, I did not get the chance to see it in this condition. I worked here for many years, for Waldenbooks, PaperBack Booksmith, Hickory Farms, had the awesome Aladdin's Castle Arcade across from the original movie theater location.
Here in the Tampa Bay Area… my wife and I stopped going to the malls because of all the out of control teens that ran rampant in the mall yelling and acting up. We loved going to the indoor malls but one by one they started closing. I really loved the malls during the holiday seasons because of the electricity of the season. I hope one day indoor malls come back and younger people can experience the joy of an indoor mall.
If you want a cleaner and less old looking depressing example of this, highly recommend the university mall in Tampa Florida They probably pimped out the few bigger shops as work spaces or clubs, but the rest of the mall is a beautiful dead center with cool ass lighting
You know you see these videos of mall closings all the time and if you live around here [Sarasota Area] you think it can't happen here...Well it is...Gulf gate mall was the first to go and now it is a open parking lot retail area...yes there were other small ones like between the movie theater and parking garage at main and 301 downtown and another at 5 points...I just don't get it we always went to the mall for the A/C. This was one of the more upscale malls in the sunshine state. Seeing it like this is really unbelievable and sad. UTC is just a fraction of what this mall was. Oh and another thing about this mall the traffic access was very well planned out unlike UTC which a 4 year old could have done a better job designing.
You cannot enter or exit through the North entrance that you exit at the end of your video any longer. Only the South entrance by the theater is open. It’s sad to see as Sarasota Square Mall was THE MALL in the 90’s and early 2000’s to go to in town. Had lots of people shopping there with many good stores to choose from. Now it is only the UTC MALL on University by Lakewood Ranch that is worth going to and even they are starting to struggle now being open for 10+ years.
Wow, I drive by there everyday, so many good memories there before. Sad to see it like this. It’s gunna change here now real soon. I’ve been wanting to drone over it capturing it before it gets leveled for condos. Had so many friends from high school that worked here when it was alive and thriving.
I remember this mall. I remember when all the shops were thriving. Sad to see it all close so quickly. I’m surprised that Costco, AMC and JcPenny are still open. They’re barely hanging in there. I call these zombie malls. Malls that are nearly dead, but have like a few shops still open
Years ago, the owner of the mall stop renewing rental space from the retailers because he wanted to sell it to a condo company... i worked in the mall before he stopped renewing contracts, it was a popular place... sad when greed ruins a community.
I really liked this mall. I preferred it over UTC because unless you like Apple products, there's nothing at UTC mall but purses, makeup, women's clothes, and women's shoes. Plus UTC mall has ruined that whole area: it's gridlock 24/7 365 now. Oh well, good for the mall I guess.
I remember my mom taking me and my sisters here when we were little kids Edit: I have so many dreams of this mall it’s just now hitting me that those dreams came from this my dreams look so much like this

The reality is that in most, but not all cases; the mall is dead. Malls in successful places will do well. We have several malls here in Las Vegas that are somewhat non traditional in that they cater to a tourist customer rather than the local market. Who wants to drive to the Strip to shop at the Fashion Show, the best local all-around-mall. The Forum Shops at Caesar's Palace which I understand is one of the top grossing malls in the whole country by sales per square foot. There is Crystal's at City Center, another high end place but not huge. The "local" off Strip malls all pretty much suck. The Galeria at Sunset in Henderson, a dump, Meadows Mall, "Ghettos Mall" old decrepit and just sucks. The Boulevard Mall, the first enclosed mall in Las Vegas - just don't. Lastly, near my home, Downtown Summerlin - a topless mall started before the great recession and languished for nearly a decade before construction resumed going from an enclosed concept to topless. Nice, but nothing to write home about. Dillard's Macy's and an Apple Store. The rest is the same stuff we've all seen before. The two department stores are smaller format with a limited selection.
this mall was so weird to watch die, for the longest time they had one vendor in the food court and then none making costco the only food option. I dont understand why the university mall replaced it as its mostly upscale stores with little charm.
Still cleaner than downtown LA!...i grew up here and spent a lot of time at Aladdin's Castle..before cell phones and people would talk to each other...find me a time machine now!!!
What are your thoughts on Sarasota Square Mall, and what do you think it’s future holds?
I’ve heard they’re putting apartments over top of it and trying to remake a part of the mail. They might be keeping the movie theater there too
