Great video! I, too, started making my own thread drops a while back using the same punches and card stock. However, I was finding that the hole with the floss looped through it on the thread drops were showing signs of wear on the more frequently used colors. So now I laminate the card stock before punching out the thread drops. I use 8 1/2 X 11” card stock and purchased a package of 8 1/2 X 11” laminate sheets to laminate the card stock before punching out the thread drops and the thread drops are now sturdier and show no sign of wear and tear after much use.
I know I'm late posting. I always look at your floss tube. But I look at them from my tv. Love all of your videos. Thank you for this tutorial. I made lots of these thread drops. I did them with the poster and craft paper. You were correct. They do stay glued to the back of the poster. Thank you for your floss tube.
Thanks for watching! I am so happy that you found inspiration from this video and made a few drops. I can't stop making them! I made a few more today. Have a great week!
Thanks for sharing how to make thread drops. I often see the beautiful papers but keep walking but now I'll be sure to stop and grab a couple. I'll be making tags for all my gifts. What a great idea. Great tutorial
Just found your tutorial...guess what I'll be doing the rest of this (rainy!) day? I'm a paper crafter and have all of the supplies. Am thrilled!! Thank you for sharing...your thread drops are beautiful!!
Such a fun video! I make thread drops using some of the same products, and pretty much the same method. I’m not a paper-crafter, but these tie in with my stitching, so I enjoy making them. I sometimes download a copyright free image and have it printed on photo paper, if there’s a particular theme I’d like to go with a project. I recently finished Cape Cod Keeps by Plum Street Samplers, so I did thread drops with a mermaid theme. Just for fun! Thanks for sharing!
Mischievous Stitches I use the Graphics Fairy, which is a wonderful resource for all kinds of vintage images. I have also purchased sheets of images from Etsy, very inexpensively. I have had some printed on photo paper by using Costco digital online service. It’s cheap (even here in Canada), and you can then use the same method to make the thread drop. The photo paper is very strong itself though. I had run out of the cardstock I use for backing, so I punched a few and never did get around to backing then. They stood up very well . I’m going to my Michaels today to see if they have the coloured rings here, they’re very cool!
Thanks so much! This is a great way to only kit up some thread for a project and leave the rest in my stash. I have bought the same fancy floss 2-3 times because I couldn't remember which project it was in. This is such a pretty way to fix that. Off to Joannes for a punch today!
Girl, between the floss drops and placement bags, I’ll be sewing/crafting this week along with stitching! Thanks for the awesome tutorial. I have punches and cardstock from my card making days I’ll have to dig out. Perfect gift idea for our stitchy buds. ❤️
Thanks for a great video! Heck, I didn’t even know those punches existed! I live in the country.....no craft stores nearby, but I am making a list for the next time I am in Austin! Thanks for teaching this old dog a new “cute” trick!😁
Very good tutorial. I have made these using heavy card stock that I cut 2 x 2. I love your idea of decorating them with fancy paper, and I think I’ll get an oval punch, as well. I use a larger heart to make the hole for my threads, and it works really well. I used to bobbinate years ago, but I find this method to be much more efficient. Thanks, Happy Stitching! ♥️
I agree with your statement about efficiency. I love being able to pull off a single thread at the time, and just the look of the threads hanging from the ring. They're beautiful!
You know, as I was watching this I was thinking....hmmmm....I should try making some of these using my Cricut. I think I'm going to try it and see how it goes. I think I've got all of the punches you used too. Thanks to you and Kitten Stitcher for the inspiration!
Enjoyed the video. I just made some thread drops. I purchased my punchers at Hobby Lobby. The big puncher takes a lot of strength to get the punch through. Really enjoyed making these.
Love your video! I was trying to figure out how to make these using my Cricut but your way is SO MUCH EASIER! Haha! Much love to you, still keeping you and your family in my prayers.
Gummed up cutters don't cut very well! Have fun a HL! Just know that it's impossible to come out of there with less than $50 spent! Have fun making your drops.
What a great tutorial! I love watching your videos....and I must admit that I didn't even know what a thread drop was before yesterday! And, of course, I had to raid my stash of card stock...and made a couple dozen this morning 'cause...so fun to make and use! I've got them in three project bags so far, with plans to make more for all the projects I've got kitted up. Thank you so much!
I am so happy to have turned you on to something new. It sounds like you are having a great time crafting the Drops and using them to kit up your pieces. Thanks for commenting! It made my day! ❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing Lorrie 😊 I understand now the process you were explaining to me. I love the thread drops you gifted me...they are so special 💕....is this going to take up some of my stitching time 😳
Of course it will take up some stitching time. BUT, since you're crafting to assist with stitch organization, making them counts as stashing, right? Hugs my friend! ❤❤❤
Also, I draw the chart symbol next to the color number. If I want to use the thread drop for a different project I use whiteout tape to block it out and put the new symbol on it.
After seeing your thread drops on your previous videos I was hoping you would do a tutorial on making them.. My wish came true! Thank you so much. I want to get the tools and try to make some.
@@mischievousstitches I'm definitely going to follow your example. I sense I'm making typos. So please read my mind!! I have always felt that bobbins weren't the right anseer.
Thank you so much! I drew thread drops in AutoCad and turned it into a pdf. I can get 11 thread drops out of 8.5 x 11 paper...however, I have to cut them out by hand :(. Tomorrow on my lunch break I’m heading to Hobby Lobby to buy punches and spray glue-you are awesome! Thanks again.
Thank you for filming this!! I was curious as to how you made your thread drops, but had not gotten around to asking you about them yet. Now I need to run to HL before they close 😁. Until next time, Stitch on!

Hi Darlene! A year later, I still make them the same way. However, splurge for the fiskars brand punches. The store brand punches don't hold up and dull quickly. I also now make plain tags to lost my project, designer start date on to put on the floss rings with the thread drops. Have fun with it! Happy Crafting! ❤️
I love using a tag to name which project the threads are for. I’m always trying to figure out which project each rings of threads is for. I’m a papercrafter - one would have thought I could have figured it out on my own.
Thanks for the great tutorial! I've been using the tag punch for quite a while for the same thing, but it hadn't occurred to me to make drop bobbins. Heading out to the store for more punches tomorrow. Could you please post the sizes of the oval and rounds you used? Also, another source I use for punching tags (and soon to be bobbin drops) is my old calendars I get every year from Lane. They are already of fairly heavy stock and make perfect and beautiful tags, etc. Thanks again!
I will post the sizes when I get home this evening. The calendars are a great idea, and makes me think of Christmas cards too. Have fun at Hobby Lobby! It is my happy place. 😁

Could I please ask what size the oval is that your punch makes and also the size of the circle you use to put your thread through? I’m in the UK so looking to order similar online and unsure of what sizes to go for.
Excellent video! I can't wait to try making these. I'm going to add a small side hole for keeping track of individual threads. I don't want to sound too political on such an amazing video, but I'm wondering if people could join me and shop at Michael's instead of Hobby Lobby. Here's from The Insider article regarding Hobby Lobby: "Over the years, Green and his evangelical leanings have served as the catalyst for a number of disputes, including claims of anti-Semitism, homophobia, and evangelizing in public schools. In its most prominent incident, Hobby Lobby faced widespread scrutiny for its efforts to deny access to contraceptives for employees, culminating in a high-profile and divisive Supreme Court case."
Hi Lorrie. What sizes are your punches? The oval, the medium circle & the smaller circle. I apologize if you said it, but I didn’t catch it. Twice. 🤦🏻♀️
There is a cutter that has a similar shape to a bobbin. It's edges are more soft than a bobbin. If you used it as a bobbin, I don't know that it would hold up over time, but as a drop it would be adorable.
I’ve seen some bobbins on Etsy. Maybe it’s time to play around. I don’t think it would work for all my DMC 😳, but like you said, a gift would be nice with either the drop or a bobbin. And I could see making my own Christmas tags with the other die. One of the places when I lived in NJ had the drops because they sold AVAS by the yard. I think they still do. They’re mostly needlepoint, but an incredible source for threads. That was my first drops I had ever seen.
Great video! I, too, started making my own thread drops a while back using the same punches and card stock. However, I was finding that the hole with the floss looped through it on the thread drops were showing signs of wear on the more frequently used colors. A little paper tidbit, if you turn your punch upside down when punching you can see where you are punching and that’ll eliminate a lot of paper waste.
Thanks for the tip!

It may be. I use punches by Fiskars, and haven’t had any problems with jamming.

The circular punch is 1 inch.
Hi, which dimension the oval label ? and which dimension the holes ? thank you
The oval is 1.5 inches and the circulate hole is 1 inch.
Can you tell me what size the oval hole puncher is? Thanks!
Hi Beth! It is a 1.5 inch punch. The oval shape is my favorite to use for floss tags.
Nice tutorial. Thank you!
You're welcome! I enjoyed making it.
Hi Lorrie. What sizes are your punches? The oval, the medium circle & the smaller circle. I apologize if you said it, but I didn’t catch it. Twice. 🤦🏻♀️
The oval is 2.5 inches from tip to tip. I will get the sizes of the other two later today and will comment again.
after you make the thread drops how do you store them when not in use.
I have them hanging up by the ring.

❤ I hope that you will make a few of your own! Making them can be addictive.
great tips!
Thanks Ingeborg!
I wonder if there’s a bobbin shaped die?
What size is the oval cutter?
It is 2 1/2 inches long, and to end. ❤
What size is your oval punch?
Hi Miriana, The oval punch is 2 1/2 inches.
thank you for video
