Love this video. Sure brings back memories. Grew up in League City. First job was at the McDonald's in Alameda mall. I was 15. Spent most of my paychecks at Astroworld. Last visit was in 1979. We moved away. Anybody know why it became six flags & then why it finally closed? Houston is huge. how are they not going to have great business at a theme park? Thanks for sharing & bringing back what was some of the best times of my life.
Six Flags saw a lot of potential in AstroWorld when they purchased it back in the mid 70s(1975 to be exact). They already had three parks under their belt: Over Texas, Over Mid-America(St. Louis), and Over Georgia, which were originally built from the ground up by Six Flags. After awhile Six Flags stopped building parks and went into the business of acquiring some of the existing parks, in which AstroWorld was the VERY FIRST of many that were purchased under the Six Flags banner. AstroWorld continued to thrive for many years until gangs took it over, thus hurting the overall business and chasing other park goers away, plus parking issues across loop 610 with the completion of the THEN newly built RELIANT STADIUM(now NRG Stadium), and all of the events that were going on at that venue. The icing on the cake which led to the closure of AstroWorld was towards the end of the 2005 season, when the former CEO of Six Flags(Kieran Burke) thought it would be a good idea to sell the land on which AstroWorld sat on in order to help get Six Flags out of a 2.1billion dollar debt. The land was "SUPPOSEDLY" worth $150M, and Kieran Burke was looking to score big on that deal. Unfortunately, after AstroWorld was demolished, not only did Six Flags NOT receive the $150M that they were expecting, but also ended up having to spend $20M to demolish the park.......MIND YOU.....OUT OF the amount received out of the deal: $77M. So.......That was....pretty much the sad outcome of why AstroWorld was closed........NOT just closed....but completely DEMOLISHED!!! AND WHAT MAKES IT EVEN MORE SCREWED UP.....for ME anyway.......was that I never was able to visit there.....ALMOST...but not quite. I hope your personal memories of AstroWorld continue to live on. And I also hope that the upcoming GRAND TEXAS THEME PARK in New Caney will fill the void of AstroWorld when IT finally opens in 2018-19, and I'll be able to attend.
I remember going to Astroworld once. When i was 8 back in 1988. Only memory was riding a roller coaster for the first time. It was the roller coaster that I think it had a corkscrew section. Awesome video though.
Nothing can replace Astroworld.

Great video - but it makes me sad. Keman and the Pleasure Pier just can't fill the void.
When I was a kid ( 1984 ) I was in the XLR8 TV Commercial I would love to find it on here
