    In case anyone is wondering..... Price at Amazon as of July 2023 is $975. Thanks for the review... I find it informative and useful.

    Great review, thank you for covering this. I like your thinking that buying a helical head planer is the best way to go rather than upgrading later.

    I just received my G0940 planer yesterday, and will be testing it shortly. I had no damage to this unit, but the Styrofoam was fairly badly broken. This is the third Grizzly machine that I've bought. I purchased a table saw, and a sanding machine, previously. I will say that their packaging leaves a lot to be desired. I have done quite a bit of package design during my career, and would say that all of the packaging that I've seen from Grizzly is under-designed. My guess is that the packaging was designed to survive shipment on pallets from overseas, and to maximize the number of units that will fit on a pallet. Since this planer is shipped via UPS as an individual unit, handling is much rougher than it would be subjected to on a pallet. That said, I love all of my Grizzly machines. They perform well, and come at a very reasonable price.

      Agree, love my grizzly machine, I think you're 💯 accurate on the packing. It's a year later now and my planer is still a workhorse and cuts as smooth as it did when brand new. The spiral cutter head is great.

    Ha Ha Ha!!! Look how smashed up the styrofoam is at 0:20. Not suprised to see damage to the machine. What a shame. That is embarrassing.
    Thank you John E for a candid real-world review.
    Wish Grizzly kept the PA location open so I could pick it up damage free.

      I saw that crack in the styrofoam and thought "Whoops, somebody dropped that" and sure enough it was bent when he opened it. At least the granite wasn't cracked.

    I had the same issue with my G0940 Planer and had to perform the same fix. The only difference was that the cover was bent on the rear right hand corner which prevented the depth dial from operating until I removed the top cover and hand straightened it. Otherwise this was an exceptional buy.

    This Grizzly looks exactly like the Craftex planner I bought from Busy Bee here in Canada. Except fo the colour, I'm sure it's exactly the same machine.

    Thanks for being the guinea pig on this planer. I have the Dewalt 735 and I'm not thrilled with it and was looking to replace it with this. Can you tell me (and I assume they are) if the gears underneath the machine are steel or cast and not plastic?

    • @xisotopex
      @xisotopex ปีที่แล้ว

      good question, didnt even consider this until I was watching a video, where they mentioned the gears were plastic, and in fact a lot of reviewers dont even mention it, but plastic is not the way to go for gears...

    • @davidd3442
      @davidd3442 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would also be interested in knowing if the gears are steel. I recently had to replace my Bosch table saw because the plastic gear teeth started to break. Not cool.

    How was the infeed and outfeed tables, did you have to make any leveling adjustments? Also is it possible to make adjustments for them?

    • @johne.5941
      @johne.5941  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tables were level out of the box, however they are adjustable with 2 set screws on each side of the Infeed and outfeed table.

    How is the noise? My neighbors are pretty close so I mostly use hand tools but I really want to pick up a planer. Noise is the one thing holding me back.

      I would say it's on par with a random orbital sander. The less material you take off per pass the quieter it is.

    have you tried wide figured hardwood for snipe? if even that is snipe free, homerun, thanks

    • @johne.5941
      @johne.5941  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've planed 12" wide highly figured maple. There is a little snipe, however if you add longer infeed/outfeed support it goes away. Also, if you lift slightly on the board as it goes in/out, it also goes away. If you mean tearout (not snipe), that is nill if you don't take too large of a bite.

    • @schoppworld

      Ran 8/4 walnut and maple through it yesterday and 0 snipe.

      I’m having that same issue, can’t plane anything wider than the depth gauge because the way the frame is cut out for it. Thinking I’ll have to return this because of that defect. Can’t find a way to make it work. Anyone else??

    Does it blow the dust like the dewalt? how does it compare to the dewalt?

    • @johne.5941
      @johne.5941  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dust collection is very good actually. It doesn't "blow" dust anywhere, just a little bit of chips around the plate after planing.

    • @johne.5941
      @johne.5941  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never used a dewalt but the helical planer heads should outperform any straight cutters.

    • @Dahna_
      @Dahna_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johne.5941 oh ok thanks for the reply . I asked because the dewalt actually has a blower on it that will inflate the dust collection bag all on its own without it even being on. So I was wondering if most others do that or if that was something special.

    • @keishabaskin2174
      @keishabaskin2174 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dahna_ the Dewalt 735/735X is the only benchtop planer that I have heard of that has a blower to help with dust collection, it could be fitted with a helical cutterhead for about or a little more than the price of this planer.

    Yay for Grizzly!!!! Replacing that tried and true long lasting metal with cheap plastic everywhere they can get away with it now.
    Yay again for Grissely customer service!!!! Someone at UPS stole my planer when it was a mere 50 miles away.
    UPS admitted it had disappeared from their system, but would Gribbly send a replacement for my lost machine?
    Hell no.
    It was now my problem.
    Could I just ask for a refund for my missing machine and my $900 dollars?
    Hell no.
    They told me I had to give UPS 8 days to try and find what they had done with my planer.
    No replacement, no refund, just wait you lowly customer, we're beholden to the shipper, not you, the guy who saved, shopped and finally gave your money to us!
    Oh, now don't complain to us after a months wait when it finally shows up in a crumpled box, you ordered and paid for it!!!!!
    You get what you get when we give it to you, that's the Grossly way!!!!
    Don't even get me started on what they did when I ordered a bandsaw.
    Screw Grizzley!
    I have 2-3 generations of their products, and they just get worse with each new offering.
    They used to offer a little vaseline when they bent you over, now they charge you extra for a good 'Ol sand pounding up your backside.
    Did I say screw Gizzly yet?
