Let’s talk PRICING! This was always the hardest part for me, until I figured out my formulas & now I can just trust in the math 🤓 I have a cake pricing calculator that I built out, where I can input my grocery costs and recipes, as well as hours spent on each cake, and it will spit out a recommended price. This is a SAVIOUR, especially with the constantly changing grocery prices these days, because it’s easy to update each ingredient cost as needed. This spreadsheet helps me value my time and expertise, because it’s hard to argue with the numbers! All facts, minimal feelings 😂 If you’re struggling with pricing your cakes and baked goods, I got you. I have a blog post on cake pricing (helpful on its own!), which also includes a link to my shop where you can purchase my pricing guide template for your own use of building your own sounds like too much work. It comes with a detailed video tutorial & one on one support if needed 🤗 #cakepricing #smallbusiness #cakebusiness #homebaker #homebakery
To everyone complaining about the cost, you can always buy some low quality mass produced junk from Walmart if you want something cheap where the employees arent paid enough to even meet their living expenses. She explains the costs of everything very clearly. If you dont like it, dont buy it 🤷♀️ I personally wouldnt budget that much for a cake, but im also not a fancy person in general. Some people value aesthetics and experiences more than penny pinching. Also, cake is by default a luxury item. No one NEEDS cake.
Couple of years ago I started a little business of selling cakes and other sweets... my ingredients were top quality, starting with the vanilla, my cakes were from SCRATCH, not "boxed cake", my cakes were beautiful and tasted delicious with my fresh ingredients, prices were very reasonable AND people loved them, BUT when it came to price they complained, and I ended telling them "go to Wal-Mart , BJs or Sam's Club and get yourself a "factory line cake" 😂😂😂 Needless to say that I don't bake for selling anymore, only for family and very special friends on certain occasions.
I agree, I understand the cost, she makes it very clear, however I would never pay anywhere near this price for a one time use cake 100% going to a regular bakery, not Walmart but most bakeries have some cakes just ready on hand, higher quality than Walmart but still only 30-50 bucks
@@NewTechNerd I think you’re forgetting that we live in different areas. Where I am, a Walmart cake is $40. A “typical bakery” is $100. Custom made (like mine) is $150-200.

That’s one reason it’s good you have an engineer brain and can calculate your cost so precisely, and therefore easily justify your cost!🙂❤️
It’s more than I thought, but then the price of ingredients was much higher than I’d expect - where I live buttercream wouldn’t be a much as that. But you know your own worth, you know your skills and you can charge what people are willing to pay for them.
What always surprises me is how many people these pretty cakes feed! The cake may look small but is rich in flavor and can feed a crowd. I never believed it until I started buying celebration cakes from a small bakery in my city. Similar pricing to yours and so worth it (imo).
It's a hand crafted quality cake w quality ingredients I'm assuming, not low end grocery store brand ingredients. For me it would fall in the category of a rare treat that I would enjoy on special occasions and it would be well worth it.

In NYC, yes, this is good and could probably be much more! So I can confirm that the price depends on the location. Also, "If you're selling to everyone, you're selling to no one." ✨️ This cake looks perfectly elaborated, fresh and high quality!
I disagree with charging hourly with most handmade, homemade things. Salary or percentage is the best way to do it imo. Keeps your products affordable & with you having a good income. Thanks for this video. I think your cake is beautiful and worth $150. I’m in the first year of being a cottage food baker. Licensed, insured, etc. just did my taxes and my accountant said I’ll never see a profit from the business unless I raise my prices. I know he’s right but I’m so insecure about charging $30 a dozen for my drop cookies (not giant size or stuffed. Just old fashioned types.) made me rethink my home bakery as a business since right now it’s a side thing.
I imagine for the amount of buttercream made there's a few sticks a good quality butter which can be quite pricey in itself. Powder sugar tends to be more expensive than regular sugar too and then if a good quality vanilla is used that would be a lot too. Idk the type of buttercream but if it's swiss meringue it would use eggs which are expensive! Also prices and how expensive certain items are can vary by region/state/country too.
Butter costs more or less depending on where you live. I use Walmart butter and it would still cost me nearly that much for a batch of buttercream to fill, frost, and decorate a cake like that.
Pricing is a big issue I'd have with selling baked goods. Family and friends tell me all the time that I should sell the cookies I make but I just can't see myself pricing them for more than like a $1 or $1.50 and that just wouldn't even be worth my time, especially considering the more specialty/time consuming ingredients I use.
