Growing AMAZING Sweet Potatoes!

  • Today we VLOG our day. We unloaded the truck after a trip to town for feed and hay. Then we relaxed by the pond. Danny used a disc hiller to create amazing rows for our sweet potatoes. We show how to harvest the slips and plant them. We, also, planted watermelons, pumpkins and tomatoes. This wasn't all we did, because someone has to cook, clean, unload the freeze dryer, reload the freeze dryer, work on ETSY and Edit. But this is a part of our day at Deep South Homestead.

People like you folks don’t get enough credit and admiration from the world. I am a gardener myself. No livestock as of yet. But I can easily relate to and admire your channel. I just love to grow stuff. It’s in my blood. Growing up in the mid 80’s- mid 90’s (my childhood years), I was with my papa in the yard. Always planting stuff and tidying up a bit. He was just amazing. Total handyman. He could fix anything. I thought he was just the coolest man on earth. I still do and I’m 42 now. He is not here with me anymore, but I keep him close to my heart. He instilled in me something that I’m grateful for. I wish more people would spend more time planting stuff or having a sustainable mentality. Simple minded. I miss those days.

Danny and Wanda, I just came upon this video in my feed today. Watching it I realized that if someone would download all of your videos that they would have great instructions on how to start their own family farm without having a background in farming. Both of you are wonderful presenters of a human library of knowledge. Again, thank you both!!! ML from a subscriber. Continuing to keep you and yours in prayer as the Lord places you upon my heart.

Today was rather frustrating for me, I didn’t get some of the planting done that needed to be done TODAY. So I was ‘guided’ to your channel and began watching this video. It didn’t take but a few minutes for my ‘irritation’ to dissipate. I am now ready to pinch my hubby for not getting a hilling tiller! But I will redeem him when he helps me start the sweet potato slips! There’s something about watching the planting process that calms me. Thanks for the tip of planting carrots with tomatoes! I’ll surely try that! Be blessed and stay safe. By the way Wanda, I am giddy watching my seeds grow in my Green Stalk! Life is good!

What a beautiful yard! You have worked long and hard and your efforts have paid off. But when you care for and work the land the way that you and Wanda do the land gives you both back so much in return. I live on a five lane highway and the front of my house is about 6 feet from the high way so I might as well say that I don't have a front yard and I have a tiny back yard and there are no trees, no nature only the sounds of card and trucks going by day and night. Looking at your beautiful yard and listening to all of the farm animals is so real, so natural and so peaceful and it temporarily takes me away from all of the troubles of the world. I remember as a kid I loved when all of the vegetables in the garden were ready and ripe for the picking were the grapes on the vines, the apricots, pears and apples...when the pears were ripe we loved shaking the trees to get them to fall to the ground and the pears at the stores and markets are not even half as juicy and delicious as they were back in the days gone by. we gobbled up the vegetables as soon as we would pick them, same with the delicious ripe fruits....and no one ever thought of the fruits and vegetables having to be perfect in every way. Fast forwarding back to the present; the term flash drought reminds me of the old theory of the hole in the ozone layer. That always made me wonder and it did not make sense to me. I wondered "How could there be just one big gaping hole in the atmosphere when the atmosphere is in layers. Instead of a gaping wound wouldn't it make more sense to have a "thinning" that encircled the earth in one of the outermost layers? But what ever happened with that? Same now with the flash drought .... it reminds me of the last chapter in the Good Book, but I am not saying this is the end of the world, but it will soon come to pass that it will be an end to life as we knew it, life that we love and sometimes take for granted, but this is not the end of the world, not yet. There is still good in the world, there is still goodness and happiness in the world... Recently we had Covid-19, followed by the lockdown, now the long haulers, and we all survived and we bounced right back amid the crime that lately is in many places with the possibility of more unrest and violence because of the Roe/Wade.... In some places in the world there is little or no food for the people to eat. There are still disasters like on March 16, 2022, the earthquake in Japan Fukushima; magnitude 7.4....now billions of people are thought of as food insecure; ranging from moderate to severe....and lets not forget the flash drought...all of these things are distractions so we do not see what is coming and when we do see it it will be too late for most and it looks as though there is a light, very slight layer that already hit the fan...but as I continue to watch this video all of those things fade away and makes all of the fore mentioned seemed like an illusion; for a lack of better words. A lot of the fear I am starting to think is from watching too many youtube videos by those that seen to feed off of instilling fear in people. But like driving in the truck when it is raining, when we turn on the wipers we can see things more clearly. and we see what we try so hard to forget....they "they" are slowly destroying America to usher in their one world government...

Spring always brings busy days back to the homestead. The tips for today: buy what you can when you can and in bulk, use a forked stick to plant sweet potatoes, use a planting journal to determine when to harvest sweet potatoes, compare plants by planting near each other, stay busy if you want to get it done, and rest.
So much good information in one video! Well done!

My father-in-law, who grew up gardening in East TX loved yellow meated watermelon. He taught me to appreciate it. He was oldest kid in a big family, where if you didn't grow a big garden you didn't have anything but game to eat.

Danny, just a suggestion from a fellow tractor owner (Kubota 3301L); take your pallets that I noticed in the background and place them in your truck next time so that you can put your hay bails on them as well as bags of potting soil and then use your forks to take easily take the pallets and product off your truck. I don't know about you, but it really saves this old retired man's back quite often! Keep the faith

your feed store should learn that there's a growing community of homesteaders now days who are looking for hay not Sprayed! Luckily I talked to my hay man and asked him to Stop spraying the hay I buy. . Least some of the fields that I get mine from. And Other people told him they wanted the clean hay too. We told him horses & cows actually like to eat some weeds. My horses will eat leaves off the trees. Lol.

Oh we used to go frog gigging and frog legs are so good. The turtles neck is the best meat on a turtle. Y’all don’t work too hard.

Our feed store don’t even buy bales of hay, I needed it for my dogs during the freeze, I ended up bringing them in the house and they were so thankful and I was released

Most people have been so dumbed down and brainwashed ...they will stand on the banks of a river and thrist to death if walmart runs out of bottles of recycled sewage water.

I used to float out in the water and hang a treble hook lure on a long cane pole to catch frogs. If you use the fuzzy ones the frogs thinks it's an insect and grab it. Turtle is good eating too.
