    This comment is about your Porch Talk video on the flooding of your property. I live on a sloped property. Heavy rain here can look like a full river. I moved here 9 years ago. The topsoil had been eroded away and was exposing a lot of tree roots. I have a lot of trees... forest like. I first started out laying landscape timbers, tree logs, whatever I could get, down on the ground between some of the trees. Over the years, the soil built up to these barriers, somewhat leveling the property into terraces. I even planted Liriope (monkey grass) along those ridges to help maintain the soil. However, it wasn't enough in some areas, so I began digging shallow swales (ditches) in contour with my hill. I started this about 3 years ago. On the ridges behind the ditches, I planted my fruit trees. Now, when it rains the soil collects more and it soaks down into the hill instead of washing over it. Everything including my pasture grass has grown lusher and greener. I am still working on repairing the soil in various areas of the property. I just wanted to share this with you.

    Thank you for sharing. This is what we were taught on the farm when we were young . I don't believe the majority of the youth today has the abundance of knowledge or the wisdom that we grew up with from our elders. God Bless you guys !

    • @katie7748
      @katie7748 ปีที่แล้ว

      The youth hasn't been taught by THEIR elders. We have 3, maybe 4 or more in some families, generations of people who don't know how to do ANY of this stuff. I feel so gypped that I wasn't taught anything useful by my parents and grandparents, but they didn't learn from their parents and grandparents either. For many of us, it goes back a long way. It's so sad. For the record, we are having our children learn alongside us.

    It's great that you have all that to protect your plants. We don't have a covered place to put our plants under. We can't afford those vertical greenstalks. For those of us new to gardening, we have to go by the last frost date and watching the weather. I'm waiting until after Easter to look at planting anything for summer. We don't have a greenhouse or a high tunnel. You are very blessed. We are doing our best to do what we need to do to have food and a garden.

      You don’t really need to. I don’t have those things either. Let me give you my best solution to garden failure;
      I find a wholesaler and buy what failed.
      I gotta make the calls, drive hours, process the foods.
      One does what one has to do with little fanfare where I am. Stoicism it’s called.

      I recommend keeping a gardening journal. One thing I always write down is the last spring frosts as well as the first fall frost dates. It is interesting comparing the dates from year to year. My garden has had multiple frosts a full week after the average frost free date for my area. I have learned to expect it.

      I don't have much money either but I bought a large 5ft Green Stalk on sale by $40 at the Valentine's Day sale. There is no shipping cost too! It is a lot of space for plants so I decided it was worth it. I'm really happy I bought it.

    My whole life revolves around the weather, pretty much. With livestock, it has to. Crops/gardens, it has to. Haying season...yeah. I've been paying attention to solar flares, etc, for many years now and the effects on all things farming (and people, but that's a nightmare all on its own). Technology is amazing when it comes to weather prediction but sometimes it's more accurate to watch the trees, sky and animal behavior. Cattle and most horses here haven't fully started blowing winter coats yet. That historically means an around Easter cold snap. Looks like that'll be the case in our little corner of 7B.

  • @ursamajor1936

    It'll be 2 more months before our trees look as leafed out as yours. In the meantime, I'm building sustainable, 3 1/2" deep, wooden seed trays and will start seeds outside on the deck.

    Where I'm at in Ohio last frost date is May 10-15. Depending on the year 1st planting by end of May. Last year late frost and didn't get anything planted till almost 2nd week of June. I was so glad I went ahead and waited because it was a couple of clear nights and I would of lost everything. My harvest was about 2 weeks later but still had plentiful harvest except for my peppers. Don't ever do well with peppers..don't think it gets warm enough long enough...but I always have tomatoes to supply the neighborhood! Trying potatoes in containers again this year and hoping for some larger potatoes. They were just a afterthought last year because I had extra soil and containers and they were very small red potatoes. Perfect size for ham, green beans, onions and new red potatoes! They charge a fortune for the tiny new red potatoes at the store!
    Fun watching the cows play! Enjoying the spring weather even if they just want some sweet potatoes!

      We are in Ohio too (the southern part) and never do well with peppers either and we have been gardening for 15 years or more ...this year the seedlings are finally do so well. We built a green house last fall and they are in there but I plan on covering them with jugs too for extra protection. Our green house have been reading in the 80s and 90s these last 3 days we've had to have the door open but I'm a little worried about the cool nights to come since this is our first year using the greenhouse

    3 years ago I had the most beautiful crop of garlic,then it really started raining. Despite my sandy soil and slightly sloping garden,my garden started to rot. I didn’t know any better,having only grown garlic during dry years in NC and AZ. Now I know better and will be pulling up garlic if it’s near harvest and starts to pour nonstop like that. I often get sweet potatoes cracking due to tropical storms or hurricanes so this year I’m growing two varieties and I’m also going to grow some early,some a little later. I plan to harvest at least some of them before we start to get the heavy late summer/fall hurricane season rains when it starts to crack my sweet potatoes. I’ve also had trouble curing them too late in the fall if it gets too cool so harvesting some early will allow me to cure most of them in the barn while it’s still humid and warm.
    I’m also building a small,inexpensive Amazon greenhouse/10x25 feet in order to climate control my tomatoes and other high value crops so that I can hopefully control the amount of water/bugs/disease and extend the seasons some.

    My average last frost date is now April 22, used to be April 11. Either way, I haven't been able to plant until early to mid May due to rain. It's a challenge to NOT get too excited for Spring and start planting outdoors. This year I'm putting in 2 small greenhouses. SO has voiced his concerns about the garden being seen from the road and I agree, so I'll be growing indoors as well.
    The homestead looks great, Danny! Hope the weather passes y'all by and your fruit trees are spared. I really did laugh out loud at the cows playing! They know Spring (and better weather) is here. Much love and blessings!

    Planting potatoes today in my chair garden (chair with a tote in it usually 18 gallon size I think) red and purple probably more than one tote needed) putting tree branches some leaves and shedded paper and toilet paper rolls in bottom before adding soil. Grew some last year but used small pot.could have been better produce still got enough for a few meals. This year using totes for better harvest.. enjoy all your planting and farm information. We live on less than an acre. Plan on towers and totes this gardening season. We are 8a.😊

After watching some of this video and with bad weather coming in our area yesterday, I decided to cover my blueberries and garden boxes I just planted with seeds so they wouldn't wash away with the heavy rains. Wow, I study the weather constantly. I’m practically obsessed with it. However,paying attention to that last frost date has saved my behind many times over the years both here in North Carolina and in Phoenix when most people jump the gun based on a 14 day forecast. Then the forecast changes after a week or two and they get frost, all those sensitive plants are killed.

    With this government's weather modification it is going to be a New Learning Experience for all of us , just as gardening always has been , some of the old ways we do things will have to change , with the Grand Solar Minimum, and weather modification that is taking place there is going to be a lot of challenges in store for all of us . I'm looking forward to see how you and Wanda prepare and adjust to the challenges in your zone, .Thanks for sharing .

    BlackBerry winter. I tried telling a buddy of mine not to plant all his warm weather crops one year but he just couldn’t wait and here came blackberry winter and we had a few nights of frosts and all his stuff got wiped out and I transplanted mine after and direct seeded what I direct and my garden was throwing it on while he was starting over. The pecan leaves the size of a mouses ear is what my grandad used to tell me as well.

    I guess you have use your noodle in order to get enough food crops to eat. My gardening neighbour subscribed to a local farmer’s report newspaper, so I gather she kept up with the weather and general growing conditions of our area. (I just tried to get into the garden between the spring rainfall days). It can be dicey when there is lots of rain, when the soil is too wet to work, so pots and special moveable planting towers seem to be a great way to go.

    Everything looks beautiful. I will pray those high winds don't damage your greenhouses. Those cows are too funny, like children looking for goodies

    I think you are very lucky to have such a beautiful place. My father had a small farm when i was a teenager, growing cotton and corn. He would of liked to have had a place like yours. Good luck to you.
