Srimad Bhagvatam clearly mentions that as a just rule for any kingdom, King should not charge more than 16%-18% Interest from his / her subjects. Banking has originated from Credit and credit has been part of Bharat from time immemorial
Only three ways money leaves banking system: 1. Bank's balance sheet contracts (less lending once existing lending matures / is paid back) - One way this happens is when bank's profits increase > resulting in money being kept as reserves/surplus or dividends being distributed to shareholders as opposed to those profits being used to increase lending / money supply in the economy for various reasons (hot markets, excessive lending, overleveraging, cautious bankers, etc.) 2. Central banking increases reserves, selling bonds, etc. (Quantitative tightening) 3. Bank's money gets printed into currency notes One Other way that was not spoken about: - Money is taken out of the country - e.g. Wire transfer from a bank in India to a bank out of India. Meaning the individual / organisation is "selling" (paying with) rupee in order to buy the foreign currency. This is what currently has RBI worrying given excessive outflows from Indian Equities by FPIs. It could also be when a bank is paying off its borrowings abroad.
Excellent podcast sameer and neeraj. One area where it will help to connect the dots between central banks liquidity to commercial banks liquidity( L0 to L3) transition. Thanks.
