Am I insane for thinking that it would have been easier to cut the dovetails in the wood, then use the wood to mark the stone with where the cuts need to be?
Why make someone a gift if you don't want to put any effort, time or money into it. It looked like crap and you couldn't have cared less about gifting someone it, this just seemed you wanted to generate some money from TH-cam vids so you used a "gift" as a the reason then put no effort money or time into it to be stingy just to make profit from the video. And the result was a poor video and a poor quality bench and unfortunately a poor excuse for a gift

@@TheWebstaff Wait, the side down has big holes in it, parts are splitting, why is it better? The thing that makes me go "meh" about this is that they did not even out the top of the stone to be level with bench. And the stones, I don't know, they could have work on them more, so they don't have markings from previous use (or visible markings from their work). Also I suspect that it will become wobbly with time (if it is not wobbly already) since it is just laying on rocks.
It’s like all the last few videos have been Jon starting a project, just to not do it the way it was supposed to be done. Then giving the half baked results to us to watch. Still love your channel.
Flattening out that other stone, so you ended up with only a half dovetail, was probably the only way you could have salvaged the project. Good flexibility that. Did a quick check over at the Total Boat site, and it said that you'll need to re-coat the wood 1-2x a year. So good thing it's not really attached, so you can lift it out, give it a quick splash, and re-lay it on the stone.
In a world where everything is obsolete before it leaves the factory this bench will stand the test of time for years to come, I think its an amazing gift the family will enjoy. Love your honest, raw videos!!
Watching videos like this reminds me that he has an actual wooden furniture business aside of TH-cam, which I really hope receives more time and effort than the furniture that gets built in these videos. Love the return pallet videos on the Unscrewed channel though, that stuff is genuinely entertaining
I know everyone says it looks like garbage but cutting rock sucks, it would be real hard to make myself redo it 😂 you’d be better off to re-start completely and why let that one go to waste, I don’t think it looks that bad, wait and see how the slab holds up outside before going too far 🤷🏼♂️ I’d be happy with it
All the people saying don’t rush videos do not understand that John probably has commitments to sponsors that require weekly videos or at least on a specific timeframe. Also the algorithm rewards creators who post often and on an exact timeline. Consistency is the key to longevity and often times wins the fight over performance. That being said TH-cam channels are constantly evolving and changing. Just like musical acts creators product and mindset change and evolve over time.
I one-time rented a 26 ft, put a trailer behind it with a Toyota on it and took it all the way from Arizona to Oregon. It was freaking crazy. I was just as long as a semi truck, that should absolutely require a special license
Concrete saws arent so bad they cut nicer when tou run water through them. One time landscaping we did a patio entirely out of slabs of rock cut by the quary most where well over 200 pounds i had to mark and cet everyone by hand the real trick is getting it held straight and starting your cut straight it wont walk too much once your going. I also suggest getting the rpms up a little but before starting your cut.
I made one aswell. I grinded a slight curve in the rock under the tails and drilled a hole through and though. Thinking it would allow for water to seep out. If i make one again i would taper the tails and the rock so that instead of a hole though, there would just be a slope of 2 3 degrees. Fun project
I do it all the time, I use a spray bottle in one hand grinder in the other, and spray the front of the blade as it enters the cut. Works really well at keeping dust down, I still wear a mask though because I like breathing. As long as you don't soak the body of the grinder you won't get shocked, even if you do resistance is high enough you just get a little tingling.
I know you've gotten some hare lately, and there is always room for improvement, but you seen like an amazing leader and a great guy to work with. Keep up the good nan!
I guess before I make all the same snappy mean judgments as everyone else on here, let me ask how you guys arrived at the decision to not do both sides dovetailed by getting another stone? I assume there were some good reasons. And, I think this concept is super cool and you're onto something here. I'm cutting you some slack because this is your first time doing this and I truly believe you can get better. It's a functional bench! Also, what made you elect not to fasten the free side into the stone in some way?
After seeing the amazing stuff that has been made on this channel, I'm shocked that you would make something this unappealing and uninspired. You're right, I couldn't make a better bench, but you 100% have the talent to do better than whatever this was lol.
12:35 you are in a shop with electricity, get a corded jigsaw, they are not only more powerful but also have consistent power delivery. Not having to run a cord only saves time when you dont have to switch batteries 7 times
Great project. I agree, if I had all the wood cut I would have been itching to get it up. I applaud your determination but I am truly cheering when you figured out that you got as far as you could on your own. Thank you for sharing and staying safe!
I don't think it's horrible. I think getting a higher quality stone is crucial though. You can't put that beautiful walnut with limestone in my opinion. Like the shark table, this might be cool revisited. I think trying to curve the wood to truly blend into the rock would be better than conforming the rock to the wood. First tries are always rough. I'm not mad.

I rented the biggest truck they had, went to hand them my class B CDL and they let me know -- no air brakes, under 25k lbs... no CDL required... I guess technically thats correct, but seeing how people drive passenger cars it seems like a questionable idea. ;)
Hey guys. I’ve only recently been subscribed so I’m binge watching.
Thanks for the wisdom but most of all I see a cool business owner with a lot of tolerance and a huge cheerful disposition.
That’s awesome! I love the environment and willingness to let other fail in the attempt to learn. Then keep on laughing.
Thanks again.
Thank you! Thank you so much for adding Latin audio, now it's really an experience that is 100% enjoyable! Without missing details having to read subtitles or missing phrases with "slang"
Big hug from Argentina!
I'm a woodworker of 30+ years, a mom and a grandmother. If someone took the time and effort to build this for me there would be happy tears for days. Great job. Awesome project. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I'm excited to hear your jokes about the response toward this bench. lol
I left a comment exactly for that reason. Can’t wait for the response video 😂

GC and Woodworker here, Demo Saws like that are easily my favorite tool to use hands down. So much raw power in your hands, not as noisy and messy as a jackhammer. Might have to try this project sometime
It may not be for everyone, but I can say I'd definitely sit on it and enjoy the pond. So job well done!
After seeing the comments looks like nobody is liking it.
Lol, You had to see the comments for that ?
C'mon man, develop some judgement skills of your own instead of relying on the internet hive mind.

It was a perfect fit to the yard and perfect hight for her it was perfect in all ways the change up at the end made it look better in my opinion and if the stones were foundation stones for the old family barn you just brought it back to be the foundation of her family memories and that sir is perfect 👍
id ask you to take it back. looks like someone built a diving board out of building site trash.
That’s kinda what I thought too. Looks like a diving board. 😂😂
This was extremely wholesome every step of the way
John Malecki taking other people great ideas and then recreating them as it you've suffered repeated bangs to the head!

Listen, Colonel Sanders making an appearance randomly, ALWAYS appreciated. Also, I feel like John and the gang are the personification of "it's more about the journey than the destination." None of us are likely to go out and even attempt this, but I enjoy watching them try something they've never done. It's great!

We could hear the thought in the back of his head when she said that "shit!" lol
Ok ok. I'll be the one!
Ummmm...looks great. Keep up the ahhhh..work!
LMAO
22:16 “thing we can do now is smash the rock, Joe said it would look best” is where that sentence should have ended. Missed the brief on this one fellas in the nicest way possible as I normally love your creations
I expected much worse having spoilered myself with the comments. Y'all are judging it based on what you personally would enjoy. What i see is sentimental rocks that have retained a lot of their original looks, of which is very angular and sharp, it sorta makes sense the piece of wood is also quite sharp and with harsher lines, but that just my opinion. It seems the person who it was given too really enjoed it ❤
I respect the effort and venturing into something you don’t do every day. I think only dovetailing one side turned off people. It’s unique and I am sure she loved it. That’s all, that matters not a bunch of internet opinions good or bad.
Should have gone back for one of the other rocks and made it properly. Also the dovetail sitting under the stone looks like shit. Functional though!
yeah the more i have watched this guy the more it seems like everything he makes is just a bodge job XD
I love that they didn't! One side dovetail was the way to go, has a modern touch, simple yet elegant
@@heyjohnsmith it looks like a half made abandoned project tbh
He said it was the first time he’s ever done something like that. How many dovetails cut into stone have you done?
Please link the video of you making this, please? If you can't, then maybe you shouldn't criticize others who at the least try.
I don't do any woodworking, but this is still my favorite TH-cam channel. Thinking of starting though
you need to lower the guide on the bandsaw until it almost touches the wood. then you wont get as much deflection in the blade.
Am I insane for thinking that it would have been easier to cut the dovetails in the wood, then use the wood to mark the stone with where the cuts need to be?
Jepp, thats how i do it, and it works just fine. Strait cuts at the dovetails, less work
Why make someone a gift if you don't want to put any effort, time or money into it. It looked like crap and you couldn't have cared less about gifting someone it, this just seemed you wanted to generate some money from TH-cam vids so you used a "gift" as a the reason then put no effort money or time into it to be stingy just to make profit from the video. And the result was a poor video and a poor quality bench and unfortunately a poor excuse for a gift
literally so wrong
@@stillfree14 exactly 💯. This was an insult, not a gift. How is this woman supposed to deal with this? And honestly, you don't treat your crew with enough respect to also disrespect their family. Poor form all around. 👎
My granddaughters could have done better than that. This is why I rarely watch this channel
Pretty nice XL charcuterie board with a 2 piece pedestal for it to stand on
John, you should hook up with Marmota Works and do a project challenge!! You guys are both on top level skill.
When you inevitably revisit this, I think it might look cool if you use one stone, and book match it so the insides are all straight and the outsides will have the natural look to them.
Am I alone in thinking the end result looks like trash?
One side looks ok.
It's a shame they decide to put that side face down.. :D
Nope!
Then do it better if youre so good
@@syriuszb8611 "yes" to everything you've written
So John Malecki, what’s your take on the Egyptians making the pyramids with hand tools?
I think some shaping to the end of the dovetail so it's not sticking out square & better matches the rock would make a ton of difference.
It’s like all the last few videos have been Jon starting a project, just to not do it the way it was supposed to be done. Then giving the half baked results to us to watch.
Still love your channel.
Aww adorable puppies
I once drove a 26 foot U-Haul with a trailer on the back, carrying a full size 1984 Chevy pickup. No CDL or experience required. It was wild!
NGL... I don't even lowkey hate this. I hate this with all of my being.
This is awesome. I also grew up in a middle class family with a middle class bench and middle class shotguns
In a world where everything is obsolete before it leaves the factory this bench will stand the test of time for years to come, I think its an amazing gift the family will enjoy. Love your honest, raw videos!!
Great... Now I need a stone pile... Thanks Malecki!
Watching videos like this reminds me that he has an actual wooden furniture business aside of TH-cam, which I really hope receives more time and effort than the furniture that gets built in these videos. Love the return pallet videos on the Unscrewed channel though, that stuff is genuinely entertaining
Nice project. It’s fun to try new things
I wasn't expecting a Michelangelo sculpture in any means, but jeez...
😂
I love how you own the company and you have guys working for you but you're still the muscle.
Fun project
Did someone comment on the water mixed with the grinder yet? 😂
I was waiting for the 'Bang!'
tingle?! Lol.
@@jparky1972 yeah guess 110 doesn't sting like 230 does 😅
I know you've gotten some hare lately, and there is always room for improvement, but you seen like an amazing leader and a great guy to work with.
You should try using Alginate or another material like it to make a mold and then use the mold to generate the dovetail. It may work well with stone.
This ain't the 80s homie. New battery are better than cored
Great project. I agree, if I had all the wood cut I would have been itching to get it up. I applaud your determination but I am truly cheering when you figured out that you got as far as you could on your own. Thank you for sharing and staying safe!
i love the Bam stuff in this video, b/c yesterday i watched the Bam documentary 🤣ahhh memories
Love how you all have your "Shopshades" on while your driving to Joe's house.
Hey look! The dolly has come in handy!
I like it. It pays homage to the old property, and it's somewhere for people to sit and make more memories.
task failed successfully
I don't think it's horrible. I think getting a higher quality stone is crucial though. You can't put that beautiful walnut with limestone in my opinion. Like the shark table, this might be cool revisited. I think trying to curve the wood to truly blend into the rock would be better than conforming the rock to the wood. First tries are always rough. I'm not mad.
Good save John the none dovetail side works very well. Since I’m any idiot to you give me confidence I could do it to.
Pros know how to make the save.
So I think you should really make a badass swing set for her! Go all out on it. Get back to wood working my man. The Woodwright's Shop tv show back in the day got me to love wood working. Leave the trends to other folks.

I'm gonna have to give a HUGE thank you to Joe, Who's editing all this, for giving me the gift of Larry Enticer which I for some reason did not know excisted up untill a month ago when John said I'm still gonna send it and the 10 out of 10 MAN that is Laryy Said "Still Gonna Send it" and I saw him race his Yamaha up a jump and crash and burn.... Thank you Joe. It has changed my life.

Lotta dust coming off that angle grinder, I'd be wearing a respirator. They're your lungs though, if you wanna fill 'em with silica that's on you.
I think it looks nice, don't necessarily need to be an extravagant piece for an outdoor bench.
