    This little band saw has turned out to be the best tool purchase I've ever made th-cam.com/users/postUgkx5ZrqmYO2uJq_nuU8TopyWxVzn8vqmPUL Once doing the set-up as per the included suggestions, this table top tool has been my go-to saw ever since (8 months as of this review). There are few things I wouldn't attempt with this saw. It takes up much less space than my table saw yet delivers twice as much punch. I've used it to create slices of wood no thicker than an 1/16th of inch by using the POWERTEC BS900RF Rip Fence. For small shop projects this tool can't be beat.

    Truer words were never spoken.
    " Everything in this shop is dangerous." And be not mistaken everything in that shop is out to remove fingers hands and arms. And an occasional eye. I grew up in a welding shop, auto repair and now have a very well equipped machine shop of my own. I'm old now, and have been fortunate enough to still have all my fingers, and eyes a few scars to show for 55 years in and around all kinds of Dangerous equipment. I thank God for the opportunity and talent to have spent a lifetime making a living with Dangerous equipment. And for the people like Mr. Pete that have dedicated their lives to teaching a skill and defence from those machines that are out to get us.

    Mister Pete, I just found you. My shop teacher was Mister Pete, Peter Peterson. I wasn't a good student (Girls). Mister Pete also taught drafting, I was poor at that as well. After High School I went straight to the military, early Viet Nam era. After the military I worked for IBM, GE and GM after just a few years I became unhappy, quit and became a General Contractor doing small remodel jobs at first that led to bigger and bigger projects like Apartment Complexes, Shopping Centers, Retail stores, Malls and Auto Dealerships as I got older I started Custom Design Homebuilding. Now retired I spend my days doing for me, mine and the animals on the farm. I do so enjoy making things, and making things work. I enjoyed watching some of your doings today. Signed A new Subscriber. Brilliant Mr. Pete! I've seen dozens of videos on building a stand/ fixture for portable bandsaws and this is by far the simplest and most practical of them all. I have a Milwaukee in my shop and use it frequently. Would love to see your take on a stand for the Black and Decker. Thanks for all your effort, your work is viewed by thousands and is well received by the metal working community. Merry Christmas!

    I bought one of these new from Princess Auto (Canadian version of Harbour Freight) on sale for about $70.00 Canadian. I didn't have ready access to plate steel to make the table so I used 1/2" Baltic Birch plywood. Yes, you do have to use substantial pressure to make the cuts on thicker material, but it works GREAT! The only thing I would add is that the use of safety glasses in this case is second to the use of hearing protection. These are VERY loud saws!
    Thanks for the videos Mr. Pete! I love watching them and have learned a great deal!

    This is a great idea, if you go down this path instead of buying a fixed band saw then you have a multi purpose tool, more options without taking up too much space in the workshop. I didn’t even know that these portable band saws existed until a couple of years ago when I saw one on a U Tube video. This would have saved me a lot of work years ago when I was cutting 12mm steel plate with a hacksaw to build my own indexing head for my combination lathe/mill as I couldn’t buy one small enough to fit it and I didn’t have room for a fixed band saw.

    Hello sir! My name is Blair. I am an aspiring bladesmith blacksmith. I've only been doing it just about a year now, however in that year I have accumulated a fair collection of tools and power tools. One thing I do not have is any band saw, be that vertical, horizontal, or handheld. So naturally I've spent the past month or so really trying to find the right saw to buy. Concentrating mostly on metal cutting saws, however I've read and been told that even wood cutting saws, be it through patients, can in fact cut metal. Anyway I'm saying all this to say that I almost fell out of my seat watching your video when you said that you got your portaband for a mere $25!!! Needless to say I've spent like I said, the better part of a month looking for the perfect price. Therefore I cannot contain my envy and jealousy when you said you got your portaband for $25! Anyway that's all I wanted to say, Enjoy your videos, keep up the great content!

    I made my first mini bandsaw in 2001 with a Milwaukee deep cut setup in a vice like yours, for a while I thought I would start a conversion adaptors tool business and call them vice tools. I noticed you designed your table that it has to be removed for blade change, I did that too on my first one, much better with the slot in front. My latest build is with a Makita Bandsaw, it has a adjustable light, a blade shield in the back, just where the blade goes from bottom wheel to the top. I have been thinking of building a new set of blade guides to keep the blade parallel with the tires but seems too difficult. Next to my lathe my vice bandsaw is the most handy tool I own! Enjoyed your video as always!

    • @mrpete222
      @mrpete222  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds real neat. I did not know Makita made a bandsaw. Several people have mentioned putting the slot on the front instead of the back. That is a brilliant idea and I never thought of it. It would be great for changing blades. But of course I have not had to change the blade yet.

    • @MrUbiquitousTech
      @MrUbiquitousTech 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mrpete222 You did it right Mr. Pete, if the slot was in the front you'd have to remove the blade just to remove the table to use it as a portable say again.

    Mr. Pete a few years ago I had more less the same idea. I gave the design a lot of thought and figured out a way to mount the saw on a 1/2" thick steel plate with non slip rubber feet so that it could be used like yours plus I added a vice and was able to have the saw pivot. It can be used three ways. One as the original portable mode, two as a small table saw and third as a tilting horizonal saw cutting material clamped in the vice.

    Yes "Norm Abram" was the quintessential builder/teacher ever, IMHO. He actually had only 23 minutes of time, albeit opening and closing minutes of a 30 minute show. He could build a very complex piece of furniture, etc, and dazzle us with hand footwork like NO one else. But the brains behind all the accolades was the producer of the show, Russell Morash-"The New Yankee Workshop". And Norman often mentioned how great Russel was when it comes to directing a "shoot". "None finer!" I have every video; and every time I watch one; I marvel at his "gifts" from Jesus. Like Lyle Peterson, he shares it with all that wishes to watch.
    Put together; Norm and Russel became, IMHO, THE "standard" of DIY videos. Also, Norm was one of the friendliest persons I EVER met, on several occasions. He gave me an autographed picture and autographed my Shop clock yrs ago; which I shall treasure until the day I die. It will never come down either as long as I live.
    Also, IMHO, If Norm watches DIY's today, I'd betcha one of his "favor-rites" would be our "Mr Pete". Betcha yuz bottom dollah! and...
    "Yes-Sir-Ree-Bobweiser!

    Great video, these portable bandsaw‘s are very handy- especially when your mount them up like you have. I’ve seen this before but this was a great bunch of ideas. I have a HF Version of this daw that I bought for a specific job. When I first turned it on it smelled like a plastic fire and I thought I was going to throw it in the trash. A few minutes later the smell went away and it has been a beast of a saw ever since. I’ve made hundreds of cuts with it through heavy material like 3 inch box - quarter inch wall and 2.5”x 3/8” angle. I have two other metal cutting bandsaw so I don’t know if a stand is in my saws future, but this would be totally satisfactory if I didn’t have the others. Thanks for another great video!

    Mr Pete, you inspired me to make this project. But first I had to buy a saw. I bought the Horror Freight model and I am impressed. The quality seems to be quite good for $129.00. Great idea and thanks for sharing it.

    Pete, as someone without any tooling I may not be watching every video you put out, however once I put together a shop, I will be running back through these. Even the videos that don't get heavily viewed right away may be important. They are like tools waiting for the right task. Don't doubt their value.

    I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. You are the only person so far I’ve seen use a vice bench mount which I think is superior to the free standing designs for saving space and using less material! I am hoping to replicate this design.

    A company called SWAG makes a nice, heavy stand for portable band saws. I bought one for my Milwaukee saw,. That saw went from being my least favorite tool to my most useful instantly. I zip-tied the trigger on and use a foot switch to turn it off and on. Not cheap, but recommended! Mr Pete has given us a good, DIY alternative here.

    Great video! I have a Milwaukee bandsaw that I mounted on the wall with an aluminum plate as the table. One of the best tools in the shop. I use it all the time. It was a Home Depot rental that I bought from a guy on Craigslist.

    Very cool. Some time ago I gave some thought to getting a portaband and a SWAG Off Road kit for my shop. I passed because of the single blade width and the narrow throat. Instead I picked up a used Chinese made 14" wood cutting band saw off of Craigslist. I have a Jet but I think all of them are pretty much the same. I replaced the plastic guides with an all ball bearing guide setup made by Carter Guides (cost more than the saw!). I also built my own stand around the stock motor and a jack shaft. Got the blade speed down to about 180 fpm. Metal cutting blades in various widths and tooth counts are available on line for less than $20 shipping included. I'm not offering this to trump Mr Pete. I just want folks to know that they are not SOL if the portaband does not have the capability needed.

    • @mrpete222
      @mrpete222  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a good alternative. The porta band is really a very poor substitute for a real metal cutting bandsaw.

    Good topic! I made one of these too and wish I'd have done it years ago it is so useful. I found that one of those urethane vee-block shaped jack-stand pads fits just right as a rest or cushion for the end of the saw handle where it rests on the table. It could be zip-tied on but mine stays in place just by the weight of the saw.Also, (as you know but just for others planning to make this) many local steel yards sell the pre-cut 10"x10" 0.25" thick plates.

    Marry Christmas Mr. Pete. I was fortunate Jim Dedmon from sawlongs plastic hubs needed room in his shop he had one but after he made a larger bandsaw for his shop he told me to take his small one to give him room. For my small shop I use it all the time and love it.

    Seasons greetings. Brilliant idea, I recently spent most of a day cutting large pieces of aluminium up with a hand hacksaw for parts to make one of your 'wobbler' engines, which I made with my grand-daughter, she was kept interested for several sessions of around half an hour until we completed it. 3 more Grandchildren so 3 more engines to make, I can definitely see the benefit of one of these saw adaptors, all I need is the saw.

    Great idea on the disposability. Just tuck it out of the way under the vise. It's not like one cuts steel parts like that every day (if not using the horizontal). The variable is definitely a BIG plus. I may try this myself......wish me luck...😊. Thanks again Mr. Pete.

    Absolutely! I have a Milwaukee set up in the SWAG Off-Road vertical stand. It gets used all the time. It's probably #2 on the most-used go-to list. The list is: Bench grinder, Portaband, VFD-controlled drill press.
    It's on my schedule to acquire a Craigslist 14" woodworking vertical band saw and VFD'ing it into a full-sized metal machine eventually.

    Mine is not simple and practical but I love it!!! You must be a brother from another mother sir I thought I was the only one using paper patterns these days. I cut a 1/2 inch by 8inch metal plat with mine in 8 minutes' time. I had to flip the metal over to do the full cut. These can do very precise work if you need them to. One of my favorite tools these days.
