    Great Video as always David! Thanks again. A little tip for everyone I bought an extra pump basket so I could just quickly swap in a clean basket and get the pump running again asap eliminating the need to manually prime the pump for me. This gives me an extra emergency basket if mine breaks and the time to really clean the dirty basket thoroughly and remove any little debris clogging the holes for a more efficient pump saving a little energy/stress and helps keep my filters cleaner longer. Another tip is you can tighten the lid clamp a little more while the pump is running because of the suction especially if its at high rpm. If you find this info helpful please give my comment a thumbs up so I know my time wasn't wasted sharing this valuable information and feel free to comment for any reason. Especially if it might help out people like I'm doing. Thanks

    Excellent info ! I am a new pool owner and made a mistake by not refilling the pump, it had a bit of water in it and when i started it it made a gushing noise as it primed. Now there is a singular small air bubble, did i damage my equipment or anything?. Thank you!

      There might be some air in the pump but it should leave and not cause an issue.

    I can never get to close my jandy Stealth pump lid all the way to the "Lock" spot unless I use a rubber hammer/mallet. Is this normal? My pump can prime and no air bubbles when running. Should I replace oring?

      See your having the same problem as me.
      But I eventually get it closed after flooding my yard and loosing water in the pool.
      But I'm doing some research now and looks like we have ghost to find away to stop the flow of water going to it.
      I would go buy a new O ring and be sure to get the water lube and put on it.
      Before putting it on.
      Mine is hard to close cause the pressure of the water coming out at the same time.
      If I find something I will let ya know

      @@NicoleGizzy79 I lubed the o ring and was able to close the lid almost to the Lock position. But, but, now I can open the lid, is seems like the lid is seized. Any suggestions?

    • @NicoleGizzy79
      @NicoleGizzy79 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      🤔🧐 hmm my advice would be to GENTLY use a rubber hammer and tap it in the direction to open it.
      Or grab a towel and fold it and do the same with a regular hammer.
      But you need to stop all water flow going to it . So both of your intake holes the ones which suck in water undo the caps inside the pool. And find something around the house to stop then up.
      BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR PUMP UNPLUGGED DURING ALL THIS AND ANYTIME YOU ARE MESSING WITH THE PUMP. You can email me and I will show you what I did to stop the flow of water.

    I have a Haywood 3200VSP. The pump basket is not filling to the top, only about halfway. I've cleaned the O-ring the best I can without removing it from the lid. The only reason I haven't removed it is I can't figure out how. I'm assuming I would need a needle nose plier to pull it out. From what I can see the O-ring looks fine. I don't see any cracks or debris keeping it from being tight. Do you think I probably need a new O-ring? If so, how do I remove the old one? TIA

    Hi there, I'm another new homeowner with an inground pool. Have a such question: when pump is working visually I can see significant large debris, but when I turn-off the pump in order to open it, all these stuff going back to the pool hose. What I'm doing wrong?

    • @SPL

      The system is probably in need of a check valve. Like the part in this video thumb in front of the pump. That is a jandy check valve. The flap inside the check valve will close when the pool turns off so the debris can't evacuate.

    First, thanks for all your great vids! Question. just installed a new pump (Hayward Energy Flow RS) and wanting to clean the basket for first time. Pump manual says release all pressure using manual air valve and also "close valves in suction and outlet pipes" before removing strainer cover. From this vid, you didn't do this first. You just turned off system and took the lid off. Do i have to do this first? Thanks!

    I want to clean the debre out of my Hayward VSP basket. I put it on service mode but the basket pump lid is very difficult to turn. System is all new in a new pool. I don't want to break anything is it normal to be so tight? Will I damage anything if I tap it a bit with a rubber mallet? Do I need to release some sort of pressure before opening or just put it in service mode and twist off that basket lid?

    • @SPL

      +Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 Ok I did it! With a few taps with a mallet it came off very easily. After cleaning I poured water in the pump and it just kept draining. Maybe I didn't pour enough. Pump started priming and noticed bubbles coming out the return line so I started bleeding air out of the filter until I got water as shown in your video and everything was good and appeared normal again. Should I have kept pouring more water in the basket until full or should I have opened the air release valve before the pump started priming? Thank you very much you have been a super big help.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +taskforceripper91 Those pumps have a pretty big capacity so I usually will use a large bucket like one you use to wash your car. That will fill it to the top. But they will prime fine with partial water in them. As far as the air relief I usually open it after the pump primes to let the air out.

      You knew what taskforceripper91 if you have a Hayward super II pool pump then no the pool lid o-ring can get damage and when the pool pump turns off the water will shoot out of the lid if it's a pentair whisper flow it's different it's because when the pool pump turns off the water can't shoot out it's because you can't turn it like your putting on a lid because the whisperflo has a clamp that you can tight

    Why does the bearing go bad every 5 years is it because the pool motor is getting hot or is it because it runs dry or is because the motor goes a lot faster

    • @SPL

      They are all made overseas now and the quality control is just not there. So the lifespan of a motor is considerably less. Got motors that were made in Mexico & the USA pushing 15 years on my pool route any never rebuilt. Some over 20 years old. The good old days.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When you open the pump and clean the basket, then refill it, air will get into the system. To let the air out the easiest thing to do is open the filter air relief valve. Air will eventually work it's way out of the pool return lines so it is not critical.

      Unless your pool equipment is below sea level (below the water line) there is no need to remove the water from the pump - and really no easy way to do that in a lot of cases. If it is below sea level simple turn the ball valve or other valve off first for the suction and return lines. If your equipment is located above sea level once you turn the pool off their is not a lot of water pressure left in the pump.

  • @deejaycherub

    After I turn off my pump and remove the pump basket, water is still flowing out of the pump basket area, dislodging the rubber o ring that I put in place. If I put tennis balls into the skimmers, the flow of water into the pump basket is slower, but still disrupts the replacing of the o ring. What do you recommend?

    What happens if I don't prime my pool pump?

    • @jacksonfev
      @jacksonfev 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The motor requires a certain amount of load to function properly. If it has no load (no water), then it can go into an overspeed or overcurrent condition that "may" damage the motor over time. Also, filling it with water gives the pump an easier time to pull suction as it creates a seal. You want to minimize fluctuations in operating conditions of the motor to increase pump/motor life, that includes the struggling it goes through to catch prime on its own.

    • @TeZNight
      @TeZNight 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      pump runs dry (no water flowing threw pump) can blow a motor, turn your pool green (over time) and melt the insides of the pump (impeller, basket, and sometimes if it gets hot enough melt the housing of the pump)

    Hmm, do you actually have to always put water in the pump before restarting it? The water left in ours after I clean the basket has always been enough for it to get going. It only takes about maybe 10-15 seconds to prime.

    How come water flows back into the pump strainer from the filter when the air relief valve is opened? I would think it would be the opposite with water draining from the pump strainer to filter when air relief is opened.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The air pushes the water out of the filter and it will flow into the pump.

    When you were cleaning the north star pump there is a hose bib. My system has that too. Can I put a small hose on that to fill basket?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, that would be nice but that is to drain water out of the pool if it is getting close to overflowing. So for that hose bib to work the pump has to be running at the time.

  • @BrianRitter
    @BrianRitter 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    After cleaning the basket filter and preparing to close the lid, why is it, or is it, important to fill the basket area up with water before closing the lid? My current pool service person doesn't do that and said that isn't necessary. Thank you

    • @gmcsuburbanspecialist2878
      @gmcsuburbanspecialist2878 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well of you fill the pool pump basket area with water that is really important it's because of you don't the pool pump and burn out I normally don't do that cause I a had a pentair whisper flow with the pentair AO smith motor and we had to replace that it's because the Bering was going out

    • @Huncho623
      @Huncho623 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its not important. If you close your lid, turn on the pop then use the air relief, it will let all the air out as well and fill the pump up with water to prime it. Either way works

    Our pool does not have any kind of shut off valve between the pool and the pump. We don't get a lot of large leaves in our pool and I have neglected the waste basket because of that and not having a shut off valve. Watched this video this morning and threw a tennis ball in there and cleaned out the waste basket. Thanks a ton 👍

      If it's making a grinding noise you will want to replace the motor when it buttons out cause of the bearings my pump is a pentair whisperflo with a Jandy rebuilt motor so my old motor was about 1 years old when we moved In but the motor was really old it had corrosion on the out side of it and so it was really old it was like about 3 years old and and the. 2 years later it will start to hum it will go mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mm

      the air out let will be in the back of the motor like the pentair intelliflo but some motors will have a fan in the front and the back so the air will go through the front by the fan and go out to the back if you put your and below the back you will feel air going out at the bac..

    Hi, this is Lucy. I’m a new homeowner with a pool. I watched your videos and it encourages me to maintenance my pool by myself. I tried on my pool for the first time and it failed and it scared me! We moved to Phoenix and We have never owned a pool before. This house has a saltwater system pool. Yesterday, I cleaned the pump basket, (the pump didn’t turn on, ) then I relieved the air from the air relief valve with the pressure gauge of the cartridge filter, but I didn’t know I should turn the top part of the valve and I turned the bottom part of the valve. I didn’t feel the air come out, so I turned on the pump, and the water pressure pushed the whole valve part with the gauge flew off the filter. It was so scary and I turned off the pump. I found the whole valve and the pressure gauge on the ground near me, so I put it back on the filter then turned on the pump. It was leaking in the middle. I turned off the pump and the pump timer. I was scared if I leave the pump on, it might explode, so I turned it off. I don’t know what should I do now. I was going to clean the filter, then clean the salt cell, then test the water to see if I need to add salt in the pool, but this thing happened at the start. what should I do next?
    I really don’t know what should I do now, please help me out🙏 thanks!
