This is how you clean your pool pump basket if you have an Above Ground Pool or if your equipment is located below the pool's water level line. In that case if you just take the lid off the pool will drain down. Here I show you the Tennis Ball trick if you don't have a valve or working valve to close the suction line. I also show a pump with a functioning ball valve that you can use to close the line.
The last pool is just a fun look at an engineer with two much time on his hands. He designed the pool to sit some 200 ft. from the equipment and 40 ft. above it. It is a crazy system powered by a 6 HP brass pump. If they ever cancel I wish the new pool guy

If you just have a standard pool that it at the same level as your pool water then watch this video instead --as you will need to charge the pump with water -- unlike the pumps in this video.

Ha! @Minute 1:48, when your pool is draining out water down the side of the hill because you popped off the lid and water is continuously flowing... you find a way to get the lid back on. How I didn't break the tabs off where the lid locks on because I was frantically turning the lid the wrong way was a miracle.
Never thought about a tennis ball for when I clean my above ground pool. I'll be putting that to use.
Easy way to get the pump lid closed when equipment is below pool is just turn the pump on then place lid on. Water flows in and motor does not run dry. You're welcome.
Yeah, but you still got a solid few seconds where water is gushing out the pump and flooding the equipment area while you’re trying to clean out the pump basket 😂
That last pool why was his equipment comerical grade with 2 filters is that pool that huge or is it because how far the equipment is from the pool
Wow. I’ve seen complex but not as complex as this. Did you replace that pump because of it being a brass pump.
Yes, most brass pumps are now gone.
Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To - SPL with the last example you can drain the pool if you open the pump basket or filter without shutting off any valves. That is if you have the main drain on a separate line.
I have this same problem. My pool equipment is in a vault and the pump and filter sit approx 4-5 ft below the water level. The return and pressure shut off valves are bad and need to be replaced. How can you shut of the flow on the return side so I can the DE clean filter? Can the shut off valves be replaced when the pool is full? Any help is appreciated.

That could be a problem. One trick I've seen work is to put a 3-4 ft threaded pvc pipe into the skimmer suction hole. That assumes that your skimmer has a threaded suction hole. With the pipe sticking up 3-4 ft above the pool water level that should counter the gravity of the water. You might have to make your own pvc pipe in this case. Worth a try.
Pool places usually sell a threaded plug with gasket for the skimmer and a plug for the return jet as well. I've had to do that. As I also need ball valves on my pool too.
what happens if the pool pump turns on can the lid fly off or can the pool pump suck it

Sometimes depending on how your pool is plumbed. If not even with the tennis ball water could still continue to run. I have two accounts plumbed that way with the equipment 10 ft below the pool equipment. In your case you probably have a ball valve in front of the pump suction also.
You can replace just the valve handle on that ball valve
