Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish doctor and author, celebrated for his world-famous creation Sherlock Holmes, the consulting detective who set the standard for crime fiction into the 20th century and beyond. In addition to his Holmes stories, Conan Doyle is also remembered for his fantasy and science fiction novels and stories, including 'The Lost World', his historical fiction, and for numerous short stories contributed to magazines over a 40 year period.
'Round the Fire' was the title of a series of mystery and suspense short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, published in The Strand Magazine in 1898 and 1899. After the apparent death of Sherlock Holmes in the 1893 story The Final Problem, the Strand (which had originally published all the Holmes short stories to date) was keen to retain Conan Doyle's talents and persuaded him to compose this new series of unrelated tales. The stories proved to be highly popular with readers in both England and America, and were later published in book form (under the title Round the Fire, although a number of other Doyle stories were also included in the volume) in 1908.
The Story of the Brazilian Cat first appeared in the December 1898 issue of The Strand Magazine, with illustrations by Sidney Paget.
All 12 of the original 'Round the Fire' stories, narrated by Simon Stanhope, are now available on Audible and iTunes.

This was a truly gripping story, brought to life by your riveting rendition. Your voice manages to convey the individuality of each specific character, creating such an enjoyable distraction.

Unusual in that this story is truly suspenseful. So many ghost/horror stories may have a little tension, but fall short of riveting the reader/listener. Thank you very much.

Thank you so much for your beautiful reading of The Brazilian Cat by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

….I couldn’t agree with you more : His mother killed, the kitten taken ( before he was weaned) to a cold, dark, wet environment - the complete opposite of his sunny, warm homeland….
Worst of all, he’s kept in a virtual cave, day & night, around “9’ square” - that’s unaired & unheated, and which has only “two, small windows, high up, which let in a little light”….Exercise” = running in tight, little circles, in the same damp, cold, fetid environment he was forced to live in, day & night….( Oh, and his owner was a psychopath )…🙀

In praise of this great Doyle story with your fantastic narration! But did you know Doyle also wrote The History of Spiritualism? ...after he attended a séance for the purpose of investigating it as fraud, but became a super fan and was compelled to write the book. If you are interested in spirits and hauntings, this is a super classic to read and keep proudly on your bookshelf. Another layer to the many dimensions of S.A.C. Doyle.
May make reading of any writer's ghost stories richer and feeling less "alien".

"The whole afternoon was occupied by this inspection, which included all the birds, beasts, and even reptiles which he had imported. Some were free, some in cages, a few actually in the house." It makes me very curious about the history of English zoological gardens and such like - Whipsnade, for example, is from a good number of years later: Wikipedia says "The first animals arrived at the park in 1928"! I am also reminded of the tastes of Dr. Grimesby Roylott as reported nearly 7 years earlier. Many thanks for such a fine narration of this hitherto unfamiliar Arthur Conan Doyle story!
