The Silver Hatchet by Arthur Conan Doyle (1883)

  • The Silver Hatchet is an interesting tale of murder and the supernatural set in Budapest in 1861. It is an early Conan Doyle first published in London Society magazine in December 1883.
Two inseparable student chums, Schlegel and Strauss have their friendship put to the ultimate test. Do these characters and this plot perhaps foreshadow the unbreakable bond between Holmes and Watson? Er... maybe!
It is read by me, Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio.

Second listening, and enjoying it even more. The true sign of a well-produced and read story is that it can be listened to over and over, and that's certainly true with your stories.

This story, as some of the others, suffers a bit from people expecting one genre and getting another. Taken as a horror story, and not as a detective story, there's startlingly visceral horror in it. This has to be one of the darkest stories he wrote in that regard. The concept of what the Silver Hatchet actually does to people is horrifying.

Two little details, not adding to or devaluing the story in any way (probably just my daily shot of snobism): The story could in no way have been set in Budapest in 1861, as the Hungarian capital has only been existing under that name since 1873, when Budapest was formed from the unification of the cities of Buda, Óbuda and Pest. A contemporary cover picture would neither have contained the silhouette of Margaret Bridge (opened in 1876) nor the Parliament Building (opened in 1904).

I think you mean that Budapest existed under that name from 1873 (not 1973), on 17th November which was the date of unification.

*SPOILER ALERT* I like the ending as it implied a cursed object that was not cursed ...that's all I'll say so as not to *spoil* it for anyone new to this story🔪
