I started into Stoicism with the Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday about 4 years ago and found it to be an easy way to just get a daily dose and I still read it every day, even now. Besides Meditations that you already have, I would look at the book "How to be a Stoic" by Massimo Pigliucci. I just picked up "Letters from a Stoic" by Seneca and am reading a letter a day. I have found the philosophy to be helpful in helping me handle the things that life or fate throws at me. Good luck on your journey.

Thank you and sorry for the late reply! I will check out the Pigliucci book! That is what fascinates me abotu stoicisim: that it can be a way to face whatever life throws our way with calmness or at least less anxiety.

I have the same edition of Meditations. I have been dipping in and out. Some things really resonate and some don't. I also have anxiety but I also can be stoic :) It will be interesting to follow you navigating this stuff.

I have a really hard time with being stoic. I wonder if a part of me is sceptical of the whole premise: but that is probably because I only have a superfical understanding of what they were really getting at.

This video is a month old. How are things going? I was getting into this stuff a little bit, but it kinda drifted away from me after a couple months. It definitely seems like a valuable, and relevant practice. Actually, this book I read, How to be a Stoic by Mossimo Pigliucci, it was quite similar to a book called The Heart of Buddha's Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh. I'm not religious, but I wanted to learn about this stuff and the book was actually very good. It's very stoic.

Hello! I only now really have time to dive in. I was underwhelmed by the entries in the Daily Stoic and so let that go quickly. The Pigliucci book sounds interesting and I like the parallel you draw to Thich Nhat Hanh. This time last year I started down a Buddhism rabbit hole. I'll have to check my shelves, I think we have a Thich Nhat Hanh book.

I think adhering to source material is probably the best way forward. Not all reinterpretations are created equal.... Stevie Ray Vaughn's versions of classic Jimi Hendrix tunes....awesome....Ryan Holiday not so much, for me at least. I think you had this realization yourself anyway. I have got a lot out of Meditations as my very beat up copy can attest. I do understand your aversion to the popularity of stoic philosophy at the moment. Without social media we would be less aware of trends and so would just follow our instincts more. Either way popularity doesn't diminish something's usefulness. I take away what's useful for me and that's all I expect of it really. Thanks.

SRV's rendition of Little Wing is legendary!

I am fed up with the Daily Stoic. The little descriptions are just annoying. (which is not a very stoic attitude but still...) Not a Hendrix afficianado but he is one of the musicians whose stuff always impresses me when I hear it: time for another deep dive? I'm fascinated by the intersection of academia and "the regular world" and love finding non-annoying examples of it. The Overthink Podcast is a great example imo.
