      duh. that's because T-Mobile does standard gsm provisioning. this is for carriers like VZ that don't.

    I have a t mobile sim is it possible to get it to work or do I need to get a Verizon? I inserted the t mobile sim it knows it’s a t mobile sim but no bars and no connection?

      No TMobile works fine. You might just need to set the apn. Or make sure the sim is already active in another phone/Device first.

      @@joncruz are you sure you got the right apn for your carrier? I'm on Visible (Verizon mvno) and some sim cards have one apn, and some are on a new network with a different one. Sounds like a lot of people are using cell sim cards. I was told that you need a data card and plan. The plan for laptops and tablets

    • @theRombus
      @theRombus  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is no difference between cell and data, a sim is a sim. The only difference is how much it costs and what functions they enable from the carrier. Just like you can get a phone service with data turned off, you can get a data plan with calls turned off. But you don't need to, your unit just won't use the call function. Some carriers want to sell data-only sims that don't have a phone number associated with it, and the only reason this is better is if you can get it for less money than a regular plan.
      But if I refer my Visible account for a month at $5, I'm not sure you can really beat that deal. And yes, I tested it and texts actually DO show up as notifications but there's no real benefit to doing that I can think of. You definitely can't call from it. But it's nice when the carrier texts to let me know the plan is almost up and it shows up as a notification reminder to order another one.

    • @jacksonduval4995

    • @theRombus
      @theRombus  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jacksonduval4995 yeah, I'm aware. I'm telling you that it doesn't matter if you have cell calling enabled or not. There's no reason to need a special plan, they provision the same way, even in a laptop or tablet.

      @@jacksonduval4995 🙄 and I'm just saying you've been told incorrect information. You are welcome not to believe me but there's absolutely no difference. Im currently installing a S8 "standard" double din ,does anyone know if a " Boost mobile" sim card will work? Thanks in advance

    • @theRombus
      @theRombus  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Boost these days uses either T-Mobile or At&t. I have personally used the At&t sim in my S8 ultra before, it has lousy coverage but that's because At&t isn't strong where I live. It otherwise worked fine. The T-Mobile one should work fine as well.

    • @markgilden9044

      sim card empty means it is not detecting that anything is there- as in, it might physically not be there or not inserted correctly. The trick I'm describing above works when it detects a card but won't provision it.

    I hope this question reaches you. I am with Verizon. When I get a SIM card from them, do I need to pay for an additinal phone line? Thanks

    • @theRombus
      @theRombus  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry, I'm not sure I understand the question. If you have a sim card with service active on it, just put it in. If you don't have a sim card with service active on it available, than yes, you need to get some sort of plan active. What I'm describing actually has nothing to do with whatever service you have on your phone.
      I happened to have a data line from a work thing in a tablet, I didn't really need the tablet anymore so I put the SIM inside here. My personal line was on T-Mobile actually (Mint). When that expired, I opened up a visible line (cost me a whopping $5 for a month of unlimited with a referral code), loved it so much I switched to Visible myself and referred myself again with another line (so it was $10 for 2x for the month), and then every now and then I buy a cheap 3 month sim from ebay or refer myself again for $5.
      I've paid on average $5-7 for service per month in the car, and sometimes it ends up actually SAVING me money since my line gets cheaper when I open a new visible account with a referral. But none of that is relevant here, I was just showing how you can use a Verizon service sim (like Visible in my case) which normally doesn't work out of the box, but can if you figure out how to set up the apn.
      If all of this sounds too complicated, just use hotspot on your existing phone and don't worry about it. I love using it this way much more because it's independent of my phone and everyone who drives the car can use it in my family, even if I'm not there. But it's not necessarily for everyone. Good luck!

    I'm thinking on buying the same atoto S8 ultra only because it has the 4G connection. I'm unable to fond any feedback regarding of how reliable it is. Is using the 4G better than opening the wifi? Any input is appreciated.

    • @theRombus
      @theRombus  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is more convenient, that's for sure. I don't need to do anything on my phone and it can stay in my pocket. Better is subjective... My phone has support for more bands and therefore can access spectrum and speeds the head unit cannot, therefore in some locations (like stopping at a gas station in Lancaster PA) my head unit struggled to stream video while my phone had a stronger and more reliable signal, so I turned on my hotspot for that part of the trip. But for things like map data and streaming audio, it's been pretty good both with TMobile and Verizon based networks (using this trick for the vz ones at least). In my other car I just installed an A6 pf which does not have the option for a sim card. I do sometimes miss it, turning on wifi hotspot not only involves taking out my phone to enable it, but it is also a resource hog. My phone actually heated up so much the other day using hotspot that it warned me it could not charge and hotspot at the same time anymore. And if you don't charge, hotspot uses a lot of battery.
      There is an option for Bluetooth tethering which is very battery friendly, and the best part is that you can keep your phone in your pocket and initiate the connection on the head unit with 2 clicks. (Pretty bt2, then the name of my phone. Bam. Internet is served).
      The problem with this is that it is very slow since Bluetooth does not have anywhere near the data throughout that wifi does (we're talking under 1Mbps). Fast enough for Spotify and maps, but not streaming video. For that I need to enable wifi.
      In a nutshell, "better" is highly subjective.

      @@theRombus thanks for your feedback. So I got my new atoto and I definitely had to try the 4G wireless and the wifi for myself. I added a tmobile 4G line to it and it performs much faster than using my S20 with 5G wifi hotpsot. as you mentioned it is much more convenient and practical, basically start the car and the connection is already integrated. I tried video streaming on the major video apps like HULU and didn't have an issue they all play great, the GPS works great. Heck, I installed an phone manager app and a message app and with my tmobile line on it I can actually make phone calls and send messages as if the radio was a car's cell phone LOL. I am in love with the radio and with the system. I am very happy.

      I experienced the same thing with VZW sim with 4G service showing but as you mentioned, no data.
      So what does the APN need to be set to? And again, is this network wide?

    • @theRombus
      @theRombus  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PanhandlePoppy it depends on the provider. Most mvno's use their own APN, although sometimes the carrier one works too (especially with TMobile based ones). The best option is to put the Sim in a phone and take a screen shot of your APN settings. Then go into the Atoto unit after putting your SIM and getting the bars to appear, use the app mentioned in the video to manually add an APN, and use the settings from the screen shot on your phone.
