      I was gonna bs a reason for the mantis but it doesn't fit with how warfare had evolved by the end the human covenant war. Considering both sides had clearly learned that big, slow moving armor was a great way to get soldiers killed, a waste of resources, and almost never used it (there are exceptions) the mantis and the behemoth thing in that one desert mission from Halo 4 don't really fit in the "move fast or you won't live long enough to regret it" style of warfare of the halo games.

    Actually for a space craft you want extra drag for re-entry. I've always been under the assumption that's the only real purpose of the wings on the pelican and the reason the saber has the extra wings. These are vehicles designed mainly for space travel and re-entry. In space aero basically doesn't matter at all and in re-entry the more drag the better. It's why all craft we have for re-entry go to the flatter side when re-entering as it slows the craft down faster and in the thinner atmosphere so it heats up less.

    • @worsethanyouthink
      @worsethanyouthink 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      If we purpose built an aircraft for it we could easily just send it on a transglobal descent and land it on a normal runway but political tensions and the disaster of a money pit that was the space shuttle made it impossible to get working. however if I'm not mistaken virgins soon to be comercial "space" craft should have more traditional designs that coast on the air rather than dropping with the trajectory of a rock into the ocean, but its also not gonna get nearly as high as the iss (which is actually within atmosphere, the more you know).

      @worsethanyouthink I mean there was the sky raker design by Rockwell. It was supposed to be a rocket plane that could land anywhere. The project just never took off though as the plans for satellite solar were pushed off following Regan taking the presidency. Plus following this Rockwell would end up breaking up due to having too many unprofitable ventures. Prior to this they were one of the biggest monopolies in the country.

And on reentry for the first guys statement all you need is counter thrust to maintain a stable speed, the only reason space age craft need so much drag is because we don't have a way of mounting g a thruster and enough fuel without spending 20x as much fuel to get it into space the first time, don't know why I didn't mention that earlier

    Saber was also meant for space/high orbit superiority only. They were launched from the ground via **Rockets** Wing tip thrusters were primarily meant as afterburners, which while A certain liability, cutting the afterburner and compensating with power shifts to individual primary engines to start course correction. Along with the fact that they more than likely have secondary maneuvering emergency 'thrusters' much like we see in other sci-fi for finer maneuvering and also in Halo itself for direct evasive maneuvers on the lateral and horizontal axis. So In either case, for modern military integration it shouldn't be on the list as we have Zero applicability for the craft. Even for the Long Sword it's only half applicable because while it can provide ground strikes, CAS/atmospheric air superiority was primarily meant to be from properly outfitted pelicans and Army/air force Short Sword fighter craft.

    The fact that the Wasp is a light reconnaissance vehicle gave me a cool idea to make it unique in a sandbox where the Hornet and the Falcon are also present.
    The Wasp could have the special ability to highlight all enemies in a certain area around it (maybe all enemies appearing onscreen, idk) or some other feature that provided info to the rest of the team, making it more than just another aircraft that can hover and shoot. This would allow it to have a special place in the sandbox and leave the role of small attack vehicle to the Hornet

    The issue with the falcon in the real world is the location of the propellers make it a hazard for the crew resulting in constantly down forces on those on the sides and making it incredibly hazardous to bail or parachute from. We see these exact issues with the osprey. Yes it can carry a single vehicle and people can jump from it, but they have to jump from it in motion and from the rear like a plane, not like a copter as the downforces can throw people into a spin or screw with their parachute if it opens early.

    elephant and mammoth are classed as mobile bases, mammoths being the local primary forward ops and the elephant as a basic forward op for recon troops in situations that a permanent base is either wholly unnecessary or otherwise denied. The wasp is a strike craft meant for hit and run sorties and recon. The D in D-77 stands for drop ship as that is what the pelican is and more accurately the designation of the unsc pelican is the drop ship type 77 troop transport or D-77 pelican TT for short. The sabre is an experimental craft and the thruster at the wings are afterburners not legit thrusters. Longswords are strike/bomber craft, broadswords are effectively just anti fighter/boarding craft. Scorpion tanks have been proven to be a reliable anti everything that isn't bigger than a fighter and is within 2 km of atmosphere.

    The thing you're missing about the Scorpion that makes it look so unrealistic is that it's built for interstellar ground engagements. The planets it's being deployed to aren't all Earth-like environments, and when gravity is low, you need more mass to maintain grip, and more treads means more mass. But when gravity gets especially low you need to be able to apply differential pressure across your chassis. In the case of Mars rovers you'll notice the hydraulics are very robust and capable of pressing the rover's weight on any one wheel or combination of wheels. The Scorpion is capable of pressing its "foot" down where necessary to gain traction, and lift where necessary to balance the vehicle.
    So while it appears that the 4 tread design is overdesigned, that's because it's designed for many unique alien environments.
    The turret being so high makes it look like the tail of a scorpion and makes it go boom boom, so it's pretty cool when it shooty shoots.
    Kidding, of course. I'm sure there's some kind of sci-fi explanation for the turret considering the people that designed it originally, such as keeping it above water on alien swamp worlds, or maybe something more specific. But I'm sure Jason Jones or someone had at least a half baked explanation even if it's something that could be picked apart in review.

    However, I wish to clarify why the Pelican is classified as the D-77 Pelican Troop Transport. The D stands for Drop ship, and that’s exactly what the Pelican is designed to do, load a few squads into the troop bay, take those troops from the main ship down to the planet’s surface, drop the units off planet side, return to the main ship, and repeat.
    Also, a little bit of fun Trivia about the YSS-1000 Sabre, there was actually a competitor to this craft for the next Exoatmospheric Strike Fighter called the S-930 Pegasus, made by SinoViet Heavy Machinery, there were nine combat ready prototypes ready for the Battle of Tribute in 2552.
    Hope you have a splendid day.

  • @Will_Forge
    @Will_Forge 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Finally finished your video (4 days later) and I got to the Saber part. The Saber is a space fighter, not an aircraft. It doesn't have a tail fin stabilizer because it's not meant for in-atmosphere combat. Its top (fins) are likely artificial gravity field emitters for stability, and the bi-wing design is also likely involved in this kind of concept. Notice there are no flaps for steering. This is likely because it's using the multiple engines, sure, but also because it uses gravity fields for maneuvers. This is why the Banshee also has the bi-wing like design. The rods are part of a full ship artificial gravity control system. This is also why they weren't afraid to lose their thrusters at the tips of the wings. The speed will surely take a hit as the gravity fields will have a tough time compensating for the off-kilter thrust, sure. But it won't send the thing spinning.
    Anyway, the wings are also important for radial thermal radiation. Vehicles in the vacuum of space get hot fast, and you need to focus the heat into fins and wings to let it radiate out as light because there are little to no gasses surrounding the vehicle to absorb any heat. The double wing lets liquid cooling systems flow through the outer engines and then back to a central control system in a way that's slightly more efficient as it allows for heat radiation on multiple wing panels and directions.
    Anyway, the main issue with these is that you're putting them into modern Earth environments and not accounting for the very realistically considered future environments design mentality.
    That being said, these wings aren't large enough to serve as proper thermal controls, and they definitely designed it to maintain a "cool jet" factor visually even as they gave a nod to the hard sci-fi concepts that Joseph Staten and the old guard Bungie crew were known to enjoy.

    • @Will_Forge
      @Will_Forge 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh dang, I paused it before you were actually finished talking about the Saber. 😅
      So the FSS is "Fighter Space Ship". It's a new designation because it's not like anything we've ever had before. It's a space ship and a fighter. Modern fighters would not be able to go into space with trivial small adjustments. They simply can't function in space across the board. New space ships will need to be built on a smaller scale that resemble a fighter, but those won't be fighters that have changes. They will be space ships built smaller and armed for fast fighter like combat. They'll be something entirely new, not an evolution, so they need an entirely new designation, but a partially new sub-category designation of something that already exists.

    I started thinking of what would be a semi-realistic heavy drop ship for colonization efforts, made basic designs for it. Coincidentally, I watched a video about the Spirit of Fire about 2 days later, and facepalmed after what I had made looked very roughly like the D20 Heron. And the auxiliary craft I thought up looked like a fatter D96-TCE Albatross.
    I don't even play or watch much Halo content, I haven't played a halo since June 2020 on the MCC. But Halo wars was always my favorite Halo game since it was an RTS, and on a console too. It was the most modern RTS I had ever played when it came out, my main games on pc were AoE2, Star Wars EaW, and LoTR BfME. It wasn't my first Halo, that was Reach, but it's always had a special place for me.
    As for video comments, I've always felt that Halo was the most realistic sci-fi universe out there. Everything has a significantly more grounded feeling than say, Star Wars. Things just make sense. Things like the mantis would make more sense in the future for a military, you've got dozens of very urban worlds with massive cities on them. The biggest problem mechs always have is ground pressure, but a mix of future lightweight materials and power generation, combined with having massive areas that are paved urban/suburban zones means a mech would be better than a tank. It really depends on how big the mech is, but most of the more realistic mechs, like the ones from Avatar, could easily fit down a NYC alley way where something else wouldn't fit.
    I also have to agree with the statement on Bungie always giving random acronyms, but I love their nickname schemes. All of the classes of aircraft are related in their name, all except for the hornet and the wasp, because Halo Wars also has the sparrowhawk. Most of helicopter/VTOL craft get bird names, pelican, falcon, my previously mentioned heron and albatross. But all the jet fighter types are named after swords types. Longsword, broadsword, baselard, saber, and the nandao.

    I think the scorpion isnt realistic for us on earth but i imagine for planets like mars etc the scorpion could actually prove to be quite useful. The pelican again likely has its advantages in foreign environments. Large transport and cargo capacity. The variable thrusters are very useful for space flight which the pelican certainly does quite a lot of.
    For the elephant, I would say the Halo Wars elephant would be superior to the halo 3 one. The elephant to my knowledge serves essentially as a mobile command centre. Its not a frontline unit but if a mobile FOB is needed it could probably fill that role, carrying supplies, a couple of mongeese or a warthog.
    Looking at the warthog being for special forces stuff, look at the British Jackal wheeled vehicle and those similar to it. Lightweight, can carry a lot of gear and can be pretty fast.
    The sabre and broadsword cant necessarily be considered for realism concerns because they are both space combat vehicles. We dont necessarily know how soace combat will be conducted etc. I know we have neutonian physics and "realistic" stuff like the BSG Viper or the Starfury from B5. Then again the viper has 30mm coilguns and the starfury has pulse cannons and a nuclear reactor for a power plant

    I would like to mention, the turret for the first Scorpian is also crewless, so having it so high up is actually a benefit as it will only allow the enemy to shoot at your crewless turret, and at worse, disable your gun. meanwhile, a turret that requires you to reveal your hull to aim at the enemy, or a crewed turret, is at more of a risk when exposing itself as the crew are now exposing themselves to enemy fire. Of course its not always the best thing to have a high up crewless turret. The closest tank the US has to the scorpion is the AGS, which has the same turret as the Striker with an autoloader, crewless turret, and its quite low profile. If you go hull down with it, aka you only show your turret, your crew is safe.

    I think what so realistic about the warthog is that it combines technology from a developed country with concepts from something that armies in third world counties do. With many armored cars coming from professional armies like the United States, the spot where a machine gun and the gunner are at is protected with armor to reduce exposure to fire. With the warthog, its turret placement and design are inspired by what fighters in the Middle East or Central Africa do, that being strapping on heavy machine guns to their Toyotas, that kind of think you can see in like Lord of War or something.

    My theory on the goofy desig nof the scorpion tank is, due to the limited space on the ships, as well as difficulty in getting spare parts and logistics requirements, they deicded to combine a tank and self propelled atillery piece into one vehicle, resulting in a design that can provide both armoured direct fire support, as well as being able to elevate its gun to indirect fire, while all using the same parts and ammo, instead of needing the materials for two separate systems

    Really great video, and I love how many vehicles got into S-tier. But dissing the Scorpion for quad tracks is wrong as that is one of its key characteristics, and removing them would make it no longer a Scorpion, you'd be better off creating a new vehicle to begin with than changing a key feature that's been there since day 1.

    The Scorpions have GIANT turret rings that would get nailed constantly. Those tanks are the definition of a shot trap.

    One extra detail about the USNC is that they don't carry and deliver vehicles in full. They actually carry them all in parts so that they can be delivered and built at location in short time.

    Thing about the Sabre - it was designed for space superiority. Having more drag is a nonfactor in vacuum, and actually beneficial for reentry. As for the wingtip engines, again, the rules of atmospheric flight do not apply. In space if you lose a wingtip like that it's going to throw your center of mass off anyways, meaning you better have a way of counteracting that in a zero gee or microgravity environment. And if you have that counter measure already? Adding engines further away from the centerline only becomes a net benefit, adding the ability to execute sharper turns and add faster acceleration, things you want in a nimble interceptor. If an engine becomes inoperable you just turn the opposite one off and engage the countermeasure already in place to compensate for your off centered mass. There are definitely some issues with the Sabre's design but a lot of that comes from designing a craft for primarily space superiority while still requiring it to at least be capable of operating in atmosphere.

    I think the elephant and mammoth should be more of a mobile command center type vehicle but still a poor machine
