Stick Commander footage of 3 PPCLI paratroopers being "Off-dropped" during Ex Maple Flag. Nothing says pucker factor than the fear of a pine tree up the tail! FYI, drills worked, amazingly one one minor injury.
When I was with the 82nd Airborne, the exact same thing happen to me, except my jump was at night. I prepared for a hard landing in the trees, and my feet barely touched the ground. Softest landing ever. LOL
Strange same thing happened to me in 85. Canadian Airborne we worked with 82 a lot it was at night jump I went straight up almost 1000 feet this is impossible I got really scared when is it gonna end I landed way a way from the drop zone peaceful dropped my kit and it set me down so gently.
***** I'm not sure it had anything to do with the pilot.. He threw the streamer out, ignored it, got the greenlight and just jumped. If he did his homework right, with the wind and possibly the plane being a bit off zone, he shouldnt have sent them.. Which he can do..It's one thing if only 1 or 2 land in the trees, it's completly different when 8+ land in the trees
His buddy didn’t notice if you look to the left of the the screen his other buddie said of fuck shit bc if you look to the left he was going down in the trees aswell
WTF... "coast over the trees"???? Give us your best guess at how much horizontal distance a CT-10 parachute can cover when the jumper is dispatched at 800 - 1200' AGL.
@@jamszalay "Bro", if you're actually a jumper (and a JM) you should know it's the job of the crew on the Herc to communicate with the DZ controller and ensure the path of the aircraft will ensure that when the green light goes on, the stick will be dispatched with any wind drift resulting in the stick landing somewhere close to the center of the DZ. Not the JM. You should also know that when the JM is last in the stick and follows the last jumper he dispatches out the door, he doesn't stop, pause, and look out the door before exiting. Thanks for coming out, eh!
Ram air parachutes are almost certain to collapse if they ran into each other, combine that with a pretty quick forward thrust that they generate and about 100-1000 troopers in a square mile. You'd have soldiers free falling to their deaths with nothing but a streamer above their heads. The parabolic chutes used in the video and by all low level static line jumpers will stay inflated in most collisions and provide easier simpler descents but at the cost of maneuverability.
I just graduated Airborne in June, and we only jumped the T-10D once (the one you saw in the video). The other four drops we jumped the T-11, which is not much different, just a square version that falls a bit slower. The whole point of both of them though is to drop a paratrooper fast enough so that he is in the air the least amount of time (as to not take enemy fire from the ground, or air for that matter) but still land safely with a full combat load. All about quick insertion.
I like the T-10. I feel more harnessed. T-11 I feel like I'm holding on to nothing. I don't like the toggles. Who-Wa Airborne All The Way Bad-Asses 🪂🤘😜🇺🇸
FTW AWESOME.....good work fella! Hat firmly in my hand. as soon as you jumped we could se you tugging just to try and get away from the trees.. whoever was your spotter should have been buying the beers that night for sure.
What a great video! The look on your face when you couldn't believe you stood it up was priceless. Hope you get into sport jumping too. You would fit perfect.
FUNKER530. I noticed a lot of your videos are are taken around the third infantry division. My brother is currently serving with them, he's an MP with a bomb detection dog. Right now your videos are hitting close to home. Thank you.
For your info Stacey, in the Canadian Forces, it's not the responsibility of the jumpmaster to spot the drop when jumping from a fast moving aircraft, it's the navigator's in the front of the plane.
Cause the aim of the drop is to have everybody gathered right after landing. That's why parachutes are not steerable. If so, everybody would be so spreaded around. There is tons of other reasons, but this one is the main. The plane drops soldiers at 65m/s with 1 to 1.5 seconds interval. So on the ground, theoricaly, distance between 2 soldiers should be routhly 65-80 meters
I always wondered why paratroopers don't use modern steerable chutes? Can they not be deployed instantly and used for low altitude drops like these "old school" chutes in the video? (sorry for lack of proper terminolgy)
Their goal is to get to the ground as quick as possible without getting too injured. These chutes allow for just that. An extremely fast descent while minimizing injury from the landing. A steerable chute would have them be airborne for much longer unless they went through extensive training which the military doesn't want to do. They just want to throw these guys out of a plane and have them be on the ground and fighting ASAP. Hope this helps!
Something similar happened to me. You're lucky you didn't land in that logging trail. Funny how everyone seems to be heading in the trees too. You can hear the closest guy yelling "WTF?"
I have no idea as I have no training what-so-ever in parachuting. I would however believe it to be both cheaper aswell as easier to learn, not to mention the fact an injured trooper would most certainly die if he was rendered unable to control his glide chute.
LMAO! That was epic! He was just able to touch the ground like a string puppet! Im glad everything worked out! That could have been REALLY bad plus he would have a long wait for help because the rest of his group was WAY AHEAD of him!
check the spot, especially jumping a roundy. you got no penetration after opening. i've never jumped a roundy. how much airspeed can you get on one like that? i've jumped the perinea on one once but didn't get a very long flight
He did not cast any curses, he merely uttered words that reflected exasperation and his realization that he was about to land in a forest of pointy trees instead of the cleared landing zone. Fortunately he managed to land unscathed and in a perfect standing position, instead of being impaled on a tree, or hitting heavy branches on the way down.
To elaborate on my last post, the navigator calculates the release point using a ballistic table, weight of jumpers, air speed, air temperature, altitude, type of parachutes used and programs the result of the calculations in the GPS. You may or may not know that the navigator is an officer and that officers are never wrong. So the only logic explanation to the off DZ drop is that the Drop Zone moved due to global warming...
The main reason is because they are a lot cheaper. This jumps looked exactly like the training ones i've done in normal parachuting course. 1000 meters, instant opening (rope attached to a plane), and all this with a modern chute, so i dont think there is any difference.
This was a Hollywood jump. A tactical jump weapons are rigged with rucks and battle rattle, strapped to body. About 50' above the ground, ruck, gear, and weapons are released to hang below the jumper on an 18' lowering line. The "thump" of your kit hitting the ground tells you you're about to arrive (really helps on pitch dark night jumps).
When you jump out of a plane in a fashion like this you rely on the pilot to tell you when it's safe to jump. They can not steer their parachutes so they have to jump when they're safely able to reach their designated spot. They're supposed to land in the treeless area but due to pilot error they didn't. He did NOT almost die but landing in a tree can result in serious injury.
Let's start out with "What is the job of the navigator, sitting up front with the pilots as the aircraft lines up with DZ? Who decides it's the right time to turn on the green light to dispatch the stick(s)"? Then let's move on to "What is a DZ Controller? What is his job, who does he communicate with, and what information does he pass to those he's talking with"?
This was a hollywood jump, if it would have been a combat load drop, he would have had a weapon strapped to his left leg (in a nice big, flat, wind catching weapons case), and an assault pack in between his legs. That doesn't exactly make it very easy to sky dive without tumbling, or control a steerable parachute. Trust me the prop-blast alone on that weapons case as you exit makes you tumble enough, especially from a C-17 lol
When I was with the 82nd Airborne, the exact same thing happen to me, except my jump was at night. I prepared for a hard landing in the trees, and my feet barely touched the ground. Softest landing ever. LOL

With the 18th Air Corps, 50th Sig down the street from ya. Way to go Airborne 🪂. All the way with the tree landing! 🏆
I laughed so hard when he landed safely and startet to laugh cause he was so relieved XD
1:41 his buddies notice
plot twist: That was actually another paratrooper falling into the forest xD

*Read in Cleavland's Voice*
Been there...not the best feeling goin into trees but the lucky standup landing was nice
Million dollar smile. Been there
not too sure what went wrong, but that was amazing! i thought they were kidding you too..
That plane was over a forest they shoulf have landed in the open area
@@Invalid06 Thanks, Ken.
Pretty sure it's the pilot's job to not miss the km wide dropzone, not the guy in the back with a 3 foot door to look out of.
Should have held LT, RT and stick back to coast over the trees.
LOL
WTF... "coast over the trees"????

Nice! I was fully expecting him to land in a tree 30 foot up and get a tree up the butt. Pleasantly surprised, he mannaged to fall in the prefect spot
“Gotta be fucking kidding me”
Seconds later lands on feet completely fine
YOU'VE GOTTA BE FUCKIN KIDDING ME!! Bro your the JM...
He's dependent on the pilot (green light)?
He can choose not to send them if the landing area is not clear or if the plane is off zone.

The safe and efficient dispatch of paratroops and their equipment. Being lined up to the Dropzone is the air crew's job.
"I might actually die" to "Better than I could have hoped for"

You got to love that he knows that he's going to hit the tree line and when he does, he lands on his his feet like ''WOW I DIDN'T HIT ONE TREE."
His reaction when he landed. Gold
Soldier: I'm dead!
when landing, hah i'm still alive!
I admit: I closed my eyes at 5 seconds before landfall lol. That looks like a bad time if it went wrong
I just got to laugh with you, if that was me I would have done the same. Good job and glad your alright. :)

1:40 you can hear another paratooper across the way yelling "bro what the fuck"
Dude I was just doing some jumps in Twin Falls, Idaho and cats here were talking about this video. Your famous!!
Did that same thing at Ft Richardson once. High pucker factor.
I am unbelievably happy for this guy XD
Fu*& yeah.. ROSI thats awesome! Glad you did get hurt brother...Hope everyone else is safe too.

An extreme way to clear piles, the sharp end of a pine tree up the khyber pass would bring a tear to a glass eye
We'll see you soon enough Mike, has a good one out there!
That UCP actually looked green for a moment i kinda liked it tbh

I would like to use this footage in a documentary. What is the best way to reach you? Cheers and thanks
Cracked me up!
Rough terrain jumps are the worst, we used to jump them purposely on Bragg...Grenada DZ...
blame the air force
And the blind jump master it was broad daylight did even look
Does anybody know what company in 3 PPCLI does Paratrooping?
1:41 "OH WHAT THE FUCK!" lmao
that's one heck of a lucky bastard :D
What did they throw out the window in the beginning?
I landed in a tree once! It was AWESOME! I had to climb down my reserve.
Funniest bit is at 1:50 when you can see that they're ALL going into the trees haha!
Rip! Lol
Training for that also takes longer too. We have square chutes, that is just the next stage of training.
Surprised that you made it to the bottom without getting hurt too badly I wonder how many people got stuck in the trees
Fucken miracle! 18th Air Corps Ft.Bragg

Just so you know... nine years later, you just won the Internet for today with that response.
C-17 Hollywood! Sometimes you can't slip away I guess, glad it wasn't too bad
what was that thing he threw out the door in the beginning?
Probably a barf-bag. I used to exit with mine and drop it when under canopy. (I got sick alot)
oh jeez that must have been awful
is the speed he is "landing" at normal or is the trees compromising his parachute on final descent?
Perfect.
1:42 "Oh. What the fuck!"
WTF indeed.
Ummm I think you missed the DZ. How many other people ended up in the woods?
well done
Perfect
It's actually smaller than what other armies use for chutes.
What a boss.
my brother in the 82nd landed in a tree and stuck there for 2hrs he said he climb down head first..his last parachute jump too...
So dope

My first tree landing I took a small flexible branch near the top into the nuts.

Well, what IS the jumpmaster's job, if it's not to make sure that the stick isn't going to come down in wires, trees, or water?

Is it just me, or was that a surprisingly soft landing ? I know i'd expect to break some bones there.
Why would they even use that type of parachute anymore?
