Keep up the good work. You're videos inspired me to try to replicate your adventures on a much smaller scale (only 1 week at a time). It has been a great experience and your videos hold me over until I can get my feet back in a stream. Thank you and stay safe!
You were right Drew. The fishing past that trailhead is fantastic! Also, I have had that guy yell at me too. He even drove around and parked so I couldn't get out of that access to yell at me. He wouldn't get out of his truck to talk it over, but was sure acting like a tough guy. That little bench down by the cliff is a great lunch spot. 👊

That dude wasn't that bad. People build houses out in areas like that to not have strangers 50 feet from there door. That being said.... what did he expect? He built his house off a lovely river!!! You are a gentleman as always brother. Fun video.
People build houses on one side of a busy highway with a small active airport's runway on the other side of the road. Then, after they've moved into their new house, they complain when aircraft fly overhead... Paradise Valley in south central Montana. 😮
Yea, he started off sour but I think when I pointed to my gopro and explained I was recording everything...he knew he was in the wrong and it was being documented!
Guy didn't seem bad at all i would have had enough respect to not fish directly behind his house when i had a whole stream to fish. Then his dog followed you because you didn't move on. It seems like the whole interaction was avoidable.
@jim Campbell ha, dude said he couldn't believe I walked a f#×king mile and you don't think that's angry! You'd be fishing behind houses also pretty much all there was from here to the closed section. But brings up an interesting point...if you build your house on a public stream you should expect people to fish behind your property. And clearly I moved on. These guys came back in front of a different house 1/4 mile away.
There is always that one person, no matter where you are, you handled it well both times . I am a new subscriber and I enjoy your videos, keep them coming.
I have had a few incidents like this with land owners in Montana (and Wyoming). Know the law, quote the law, stay in the stream and stand your ground. Some of these land owners will harass you, try to get a picture of them and make a report to local fish and wildlife. Harassing someone who is legally fishing is a violation of the law.
Dude, I’m in North Idaho and have never had this problem. I often get land owners offering easier access or some good spots they’ve found. I’m a guide in this state, so I run into folks often and I’ve yet to have an unpleasant encounter with a landowner.
Good video. Good response. Explain yourself, take the high road. As far as wading a mile in the stream? I have waded long distances in streams (in Michigan). Wet wading! I get scratched up legs, sore feet, mosquito bites. I got lost once. Waded a creek down to a river branch. Followed the branch down and caught some bigger trout. It was getting late so I started back and I missed the turn up the creek! I finally figured it out, turned back, found the creek, and waded 1/2 mile in the dark back to the road. I was tired, fell a few times. Thought I was going to spend the night in the woods... but I spent all that time in the water. Tight lines Drew.
Newer subscriber, found one of your videos in this series about a month ago and have just gotten caught up and have started watching the series from 2021. Really enjoyed the content. Thanks for being a great ambassador for the fly fishing community as this video demonstrates.
Montana is a 'high-water' mark state and regulations were passed decades ago addressing issues like this. Handled it well. You could have not said anything when he asked you about his dog but didn't. Shows you have integrity and character unlike the property owner. Best wishes for future successful fishing adventures.
Seriously people? If I GOD blessed me with a house in a beautiful place like that I would be offering beer to anyone that would talk to me and knowing the rules.
Well if I ever single female out there I'd be freaked out some guys outside of my house... As a former park ranger I've dealt with a lot of homeless and they all are con artists and on drugs that I've dealt with. Please wake up people it's not the same world you grew up in
Ive learned to either ignore the person completely or explain myself one time clearly and slowly in one sentence and then ignore them. Happened today. I had talked with a game warden that told me about a flood control pond i didn’t know about and how to access it. I did exactly as he said. Sure enough, billy badass comes down onto the state wildlife conservation property and tells me I’m trespassing. I told him this is state property and I’m fishing. They yelled for 2 minutes then called the cops which called the game warden which came back and ran them off. Lol they were trying to scare me out of there because it was good fishing!
I used to live in Montana and have been through this before. Its crazy how pissed off people get when they see somebody wading in the river. You played it well.
Awesome places and really good fishing! Normal for that guy to find out more if you see a stranger so close to your home. Sometimes hapens to me here also. Situations most of times gets solved explaining we r not camping, not making fire, not going leave garbage or making noise, and just walking and fishingcatch and release- I also go with a couple cofee cups with my logo to give as a present to residents that show ( and to show) friendly attitude
I totally get he came to check on what had his dogs barking which is why I explained myself and tried to be polite. But when he said, "you walked a f##king mile" that's not cool and I didn't appreciate it. He had his answer and knew I wasn't doing anything illegal. There was absolutely no need to be disrespectful
Just found your channel, love it all, you gotta add Upper peninsula of michigan to your bucket list, pretty amazing brookies and browns, I've got lots of vids to watch now!
Drew, I fished Montana for 3 weeks a couple of years ago. Only had one time that I ran into land owners and they were really friendly. This was on the Ruby river. I guess I just go lucky, because the locals told me the owners on the Ruby were A...holes. Great video, you handled the encounter very well.
I live in Powell Wy. About 75 east of the east gate of Yellowstone. The opening of the video with all the sheep reminds me of the north fork of the shoshone. Very cool to see you around where i live.
“Not surprised your dog didn’t wanna live with you” 🤣🤣🤣 omg that’s funny! Hopefully some day I can live on a stream and I’ll be angler friendly!!! Stop in for an espresso!
I love summer fishing those sweet small streams. I have a few favorites here in New Zealand I call it boots and shorts fishing a small backpack with some sandwiches and a bottle of water a nice light rod and a warm days fishing ahead of me. I have had land owners or even just nosy locals mildly harrass me but like this instance an open honest and direct answer without escalating and we usually part on friendly terms if I am in the right which I genuinely try to do. Once I was actually in the wrong (I had unknowingly crossed the boundary) but again I made my case the land owner made his and I listened apologized and offered to back out the response was "no thats OK carry on I can see you respect the land and stream'' now I have a new permission in an area no one asks because of the "grumpy" owner.
Yea, gopro audio turned up 800% and still struggles to get what his comments clearly. Basically he didn't believe I waded a mile up the stream from the national forest access...him, "you walked a f#%king mile." You expect me to believe that and a bunch of other I don't believe you comments.
That guy didn’t seem too upset. I will say I have ran into places here in Ohio that landowners do own the river bed and it is considered trespassing in some parts of you touch the bottom. It’s legal to float the river but you cannot wade nor anchor your vessel
Yeah same thing in Ontario.River bottom rights. The land owner pays taxes for that whole plot of land so that means he owns the river bed.Legally you can only drift over it..
I had a very friendly encounter with a rancher downstream on this body of water. I walked in on a public access point and he came down and asked how I was doing and talked to me for a while and told me I could fish the beautiful water going through his ranch. He told me where to park and to just hop the fence! What a cool guy. I caught some really nice sized trout on that water. I wish most encounters were that positive. I had a guy pull a knife on me while I was legally fishing next to his property in Pennsylvania. He was on some sort of drugs so I left without confrontation.
Enjoying your videos.. Curious if you can advise me on a good telescopic fishing rod and reel. We're going to vacation in Montana next month. Good fishing Jim
My dog fishes with me.I catch a lot less fish, but i'd never change a thing. Riverside property owners........Dang, i'd love to be one. Naw, too constrictive, restrictive, blah But............Heck i'm happy as that white dog that we have as good of access as we do. Mighty grateful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Drew, watching your flix makes me more grateful! Could be much worse. Mend more..............J
I've always heard you gotta let them dry completely. I've considered interchangeable felt soles that korkers makes but my last pair from like 10 yrs ago did not last long imo. The tab on the back of the boot broke in under 18 months. Probably bc I changed soles often...likely more than what's considered normal use.
Drew, this happened to me. For some reason folks in Montana either dont know the rules or they wished the rules were different. There is a movement in Montana to change the law.
Nothing worse than newcomers escaping where they came from and then trying to make their new place just like the one they escaped from. That's Montana.
@@OregonOldTimer Reminds me of where I live in Washington. Lovely trees everywhere, a couple from SoCal moved onto the parcel next to ours and clear cut all of the trees. Then they moved a few years later. *sigh*
I’ve had that experience while hunting in Montana plenty of times on public next to private. I may have had to walk 3 miles uphill to get here and you had to walk out your back door but I have just as much right to be here. People suck everywhere even in the last best place!
I have ran into guys on the Milwaukee River who had a bird because I went by their house in my kayak or gave me crap like I was catching all their fish by their dock... One guy was fishing the bank by his house and I asked him what side he wanted me to pass on so he says far side so I quietly paddle by and he goes nuts saying I am spooking all the fish LOL
he bought his property all backed up to bureau of land management thinking he had the feds at his back... he later found his vision of solitude shattered when some dude from arkansas hikes up stream with a montana state law book. montanas stream law is always under pressure from these land owners.
Fished a lot in Utah. Can't be in the stream. If feet are on the ground it is trespassing. People don't realize some of us could be good for the area. Anyway, you kept your cool...Keep having fun out there..
I can totally understand the guy grilling to make sure you came up the river and not on his property. some people out there start with warning shots so he wasnt too bad.
It's funny not only is that completely legal here in VA but there is a 5ft easement from the bank that a fisherman is entitled too, in case of an emergency like drowning. 👌
It happens more now that there are a lot of implants buying up riverfront properties unaware of the laws they move into. You’ll see fences built into the river all the time. 😂 Can’t wait for floating season. 😎
Private owners! Be kind to others please, especially those fly fishermen that are on the river LEGALLY! did I say LEGALLY? Love your LEGAL videos Drew!
Early in my adult life I learned that as soon as I give someone a hard time, it’s usually not too long before I have to ask them for something. So I just quit giving people shit. That entitled db needs to learn that lesson.
I do love MT. but it's access rules are junk. It seems like almost everybody goes straight to accusation instead of friendly banter and make sure the rules are understood. Such a sweet dog she looked like, I agree, no wonder she wanted out. Thanks for staying positive and no escalation happened.
I have read all the John Gierach books of his fly fishing experiences and he wrote about the land owners and their abilities to make a mountain out of a mole hill.
See guy standing river right near his home .He just see what going on no big deal Put shoe on other Foot. See guy standing river near your House middle of nowhere what would you say
@Jim Munro I totally get he came to see what his dogs were barking at. I do the same when my dog barks....but I don't open the door and ask the people in the street why or how they got there. I certainly don't say, "you walked a f*#king mile!" I answered his initial question out of respect b/c I'd investigate what my dogs were barking at also but when he saw a guy fishing...he had his answer. No need to be disrespectful.
And that’s why I don’t go to MT anymore. Too many uptight people from CA. Hey wait, I’m from CA! Love how you handled it though and didn’t let it ruin your day.
Sad to have a state with reasonable water access rights, and yet there are still people like that who think they own everything. He's probably not a Montana native, either.
He crossed the line into harassment. He needs a ticket lesson. This wasnt the first time he asked a fisherman 3 times same question. Advise him of the law.
You handled that well, but it may not be the best idea to lead with.... I'm a navy veteran who's been living in my van for 7 weeks....that describes a lot of the squatters and trespassers you see in many parts of the west.
I can relate to that. I was FLOATING the Rio Grande near Creed Co and I had a lodge owner yelling at me that I couldn't fish there. I told her I wasn't touching the bottom and she just continued yelling.
Just to play devil's advocate, you don't know what kind of people he has had to deal with over the years. Love The videos keep up the mile long hikes 👍
I'm sure the landowner is quite versed on the law yet he 'chooses to deal' with these law abiding fishermen by confrontation and that makes him an a!!hole.
Some landowners are a pain. Some are great and appreciate the resource being used (legally). If you live next to a stream (with public access) you should expect to see fishermen. This guy built his home so close to that stream that it will likely end up wiped out by a flood sooner or later.
Rich people that gets to enjoy such a beautiful home. I'm sure they didn't work hard for it one bit.....grandfathered in type money. Judges. Politicians kids probably.....
It kinda depends on what this guys previous experiences were. Highly probable he was just being an a$$, but sometimes people get this way after several bouts with people who actually are trespassing, poaching, littering, etc. You handled it well. It’s best just to know the laws, clearly state you are obeying the law, and move on your way. You never know if they’re packing, maybe they had a bad day, maybe under the influence. The risk:reward ratio for escalation isn’t worth it.
Good job man. Here in Colorado they're trying to pass legislation so riverfront property owners can own the river bed. It'd be trespassing to wade the river. ugh! Maybe this has already taken effect in some other states?
It’s been back and forth in Utah. As it stands right now, private land owners may own the riverbed and only navigable waterways are allowed floating over private property and you may not get out on private property unless for portage safety reasons. It is a pretty lame law. You will notice its effects when you see how much more concentrated the anglers will be there. Good luck in CO!
I thought the current law was that property owners owned the riverbed. Can float but not wade or touch bottom if the property owner restricts access. Been a few years since I fished in Colorado so maybe it changed. But I remember a lady yelling at me that I could wade half way across a stream but not beyond a rock which marked her property line.
@@LooknFishy Your are correct. I'm a Colorado native and that has been the law in Colorado for as long as I can remember. You can float through private property but not wade.
I don’t understand why people have to be like that. Seriously like him arguing with you and yelling at you would ever get you to admit you trespassed, even if you had. Which I completely believe you were telling him the truth.
Some people just can't believe there are other people willing to wade for miles in a river just to enjoy fishing. These people should probably go out and enjoy some fishing.
Each state has it's own property laws. MT is a, as long as you access the stream from a public access, you can stay under the high water mark, and use the stream for any recreational purpose. Other states are different which creates confusion.
Again, you handled it better than I would have. As a retired WY Law enforcement officer and then 5.5 years as as probation Agent I do not have a lot of patience for people that attempt to bluff their way to harass people doing the right thing. I wouldn't if I were you either. I'm sure you've seen enough real problems to last a lifetime!
I've done exactly the same thing....public access, stay in the water for a mile, and got harassed. She finally gave up but she was difficult. Good job
Had a similar occurrence, Boulder river. High water mark law in Montana, when I see a house in the river now I just turn around. Be careful out there.

he bought his property all backed up to bureau of land management thinking he had the feds at his back... he later found his vision of solitude shattered when some dude from arkansas hikes up stream with a montana state law book. montanas stream law is always under pressure from these land owners.
Oftentimes the locals put up counterfeit Road closed or posted signs which are supposed to be Public Access
Iv run into this sort of thing before Where I'm at as long as you're below the high water mark on a river they can't say anything.. You did good
Gotta stay positive!
As the philosopher Frank Miller observed, "You've got to expect that sort of thing when you're dealing with people."
That is so true!
I do love MT. but it's access rules are junk. It seems like almost everybody goes straight to accusation instead of friendly banter and make sure the rules are understood. Such a sweet dog she looked like, I agree, no wonder she wanted out. Thanks for staying positive and no escalation happened.
The dog was a people person...the dude, not so much lol!
So did the dog sleep in the topper with you or in the cab for the rest of trip ?
Well at least you can see the fish in the water so know where to cast 👍
Even the dog said , can I go with you!
I have read all the John Gierach books of his fly fishing experiences and he wrote about the land owners and their abilities to make a mountain out of a mole hill.
Truth!
See guy standing river right near his home .He just see what going on no big deal Put shoe on other Foot. See guy standing river near your House middle of nowhere what would you say
Well if guy had a fly rod and is standing in the river in Montana I say, “Hello, catch anything.”
Great job. Some peeps just ware you out. Nicely done.
can you use a fly on any rod??? and have you ever tride?
Montana law states you have access up to the high water mark… you were fine. I lived there 20 plus years… and fished some great streams….
And that’s why I don’t go to MT anymore. Too many uptight people from CA. Hey wait, I’m from CA! Love how you handled it though and didn’t let it ruin your day.
if you hadn't been waving that noisy 3wt. around like a crazy man...
lol. nice fish and stream.
Haha can't take it anywhere!
can someone explain the montana laws he was talking about??
“ Entitled “ is how I would describe that guy! What harm were you doing enjoying a bit of fishing?
You Gotta Love the Karen's! Interesting video! keep em coming Drew!
Sad to have a state with reasonable water access rights, and yet there are still people like that who think they own everything. He's probably not a Montana native, either.
Beautifull vidio,super mister.
Thank you!
Had the same thing happen to me in a drift boat near Gunnison, CO with a guide.. Huh, I think I'm in the water!
I can relate to that. I was FLOATING the Rio Grande near Creed Co and I had a lodge owner yelling at me that I couldn't fish there. I told her I wasn't touching the bottom and she just continued yelling.
Crazy!
Just to play devil's advocate, you don't know what kind of people he has had to deal with over the years. Love The videos keep up the mile long hikes 👍
From his words he'd never seen anyone else lol! Actually another guy commented this dude did the same thing to him and waited at the bridge also!
I stand corrected he's an ass!🤣
I'm sure the landowner is quite versed on the law yet he 'chooses to deal' with these law abiding fishermen by confrontation and that makes him an a!!hole.
I would have definitely offered him a beer or a meal after hearing how far he's traveled
So what did you name your new dog?
Some landowners are a pain. Some are great and appreciate the resource being used (legally). If you live next to a stream (with public access) you should expect to see fishermen. This guy built his home so close to that stream that it will likely end up wiped out by a flood sooner or later.
For sure and this was an easy wade from the public access. Another guy commented the same dude yelled at him also...guessing it's his thing!
I hike miles in the water every time I go fishing 😂
The biggest head scratcher is that this guy thinks a mile is a long ways to go.
Rich people that gets to enjoy such a beautiful home. I'm sure they didn't work hard for it one bit.....grandfathered in type money. Judges. Politicians kids probably.....
You can walk the shore by law it's the high water mark you have to stay within
It kinda depends on what this guys previous experiences were.
Thanks for being a Professional.
Even when dealing with an Asshole.
Great video
Drew! Some people... Luckily you went on.
It was still a great day!
I’d take that hassle to be out there landing fish any day!
Got to say that was a really nice dog, would have been a highlight for me.
If you're floating in Colorado, you cannot step foot on the river bed if it's private nor can you drop anchor@@russlehman2070
Carry bear spray with you. It's good for two footed critters too.
I think he was surprised. Probably never seen an angler do it the right way.
Some people!
His dog wanted to hang out with you instead of him...that's a statement right there.
how is it possible to trespass on land that is there for all to share .
Each state has it's own property laws. MT is a, as long as you access the stream from a public access, you can stay under the high water mark, and use the stream for any recreational purpose. Other states are different which creates confusion.
Should have burnt down that 2bit fake sign. This is America!
