    I have seen so many people replacing these drives on TH-cam. I decided to do a teardown and try to fix the drive instead. I found a Chuckee Cheese game card, 2 DVD's (Gene Wilder Double feature), insurance card, a nickel, a quarter, 2 stickers, a torilla chip and a piece of a balloon inside. Even after the drive made horrific noises that lead me to believe there was no way it work again. After removing all of the foreign objects, the drive would still not load or run a disc properly. I kept messing with it until I finally had 5 sucessful load/reads. It now works quietly and properly.
    The most time consuming and frustrating part about the whole process was not having a tri-wing screwdriver that was skinny enough to fit into the deep holes on the case
    It was a nightmare. I decided I will not put those screws back in but rather replace them with some Phillips head screws .
    The mystery part shown at 2:54 was the other problem. On my Black Wii which seems to be slightly different, there was a metal clip that slips over that White plastic mystery piece. I tried to put the clip on 3 different ways and nothing would load/run properly until the third try (the right way). After that it all worked perfectly.
    I had the correct Tri-wing 1/4 inch drive tip which worked until I had to get into the deep hole. I would highly recommend to anyone attempting this to take the time to order the tri-wing screwdriver online. It will make things much easier for you. Thanks for the video.

    I think that if you're going to open the disc drive, you might as well lubricate the metal shafts, stepper motor rod, and gears with some lithium grease.

    • @FantasticQuack
      @FantasticQuack  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The existing grease still looked okay on these but generally don't disagree if you have some handy. However if you're gonna do that you need to be prepared to remove the old stuff with a solvent before replacing it, otherwise you're just putting new grease on dirty grease.

Once done, it not only wasn't able to read discs, it also made a weird sound and a message popped saying that there was a problem and I should restart my Wii lol. Problem with the wii is that you can buy used/working ones for ~$40 so that often makes more sense than paying someone to fix a bad one. But they are extremely useful to the modding community even with a bad disc drive--people like to make portable wii/gamecubes with the main boards. You could sell them for parts to fund a working wii if you or your handy friends aren't comfortable working on it, just a suggestion!

    My son's wii has a dirty lens I think? I tried to take it apart but got stuck on the different type of screw. It plays some games fine, but super smash brothers doesn't work, and zelda twilight princess goes on for a minute and then gives an error. Do you think if I can take it apart and clean the fan it'll fix the issue? There's no crunching sounds, just the disc read error.

    • @FantasticQuack
      @FantasticQuack  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would check the problem games themselves as a first step. If they look scuffed/scratched I would get them resurfaced and see if that fixes the issue. If the games aren't the problem, clean the lens with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. If still no improvement, I'd look at adjusting the laser power potentiometer to a slightly lower resistance (for more laser power).

      @FantasticQuack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did try cleaning the lenses, but not sure if I mentioned it in the video. Interestingly, of all the disc read errors I've fixed on various consoles, I have not once found the issue to be a dirty lense.

    I have a Wii that reads one game (Wii Sports), but with another game (Wii Party) I get a disc reading error about 10 minutes into playing. When I eject the game and put it back in, it just gives me the error again, but this time right away. This doesn't happen to my other game, so I'm unsure as to what the problem is. Can it just be that the Wii Laser has trouble reading the information in one game and not the other or something?

    • @FantasticQuack

    Ok so I have 2 Wiis (it's a long story) one I *just* got from my dad, and the other is one I grew up with. The new one *shouldn't* have any problems... but the one I grew up with was thrown into a dumpster by its previous owners before my dad found it and gave it to me. But for some reason, the brand new one won't read the Wii Sports it came with, while my old one plays it just fine. Both Wiis play other games completely fine, it's just the Wii Sports that won't play on my new Wii.
    Edit: it is only the 1 disc that does this. Also, it doesn't just tell me it can't read it, it FULLY tells me to take out the disc and turn off the Wii, which tells me that it isn't a disc problem
    Edit 2: the disc is VEEEEERY slightly scatched. Such a small amount that it shouldn't even matter at all. You can't even notice the scratch unless you look extremely close

    • @FantasticQuack

      A cordless drill will fix a lot of things, but probably not your video games.

      I didn't really know what I was doing going into this. In some cases the drive is just toast and you're better off replacing it.

    This is the exact game I'm trying to play too 😭😂😭😂
    It recognizes the game and all but it won't read the game disk
    Luckily mine isn't making any weird noise and it reads any other game but this game is in perfect condition so I'm so confused

      Sometimes the drives just die, if the issue isn't obvious it usually makes more sense to just replace the drive vs spending hours troubleshooting. Hope you can get it fixed up!
