    I recently got tested for vitamin D and turns out I have a *significant* deficiency even though I live in Mexico. My doctor just prescribed supplements and said I wear too much sunscreen?! With a history of melanoma from my dad?!!!! So I really needed this. Thank you for everything you do, Michelle 💛

    Finally a credible source of information! There is so much data about the topic and it was hard for me to know which guidelines to follow. Thank you so much for this video, keep up the good work :) Quick question: Korean sunscreen seems to get the praise for not feeling "heavy" on the face. Have you tried any brands you would recommend? I usually use physical sunscreen so I'm not used to it feeling light.

    Great video! As someone with darker skin (Fitzpatrick scale V) and living in UK, I have always been concerned re Vit D deficiency, though more recently I've also been thinking about UVA damage! I like the logic of the Aus guidelines being dependent on UV index which I've always thought is more sensible than a blanket approach that I've always struggled with. We all live in different climates with different levels of exposure, different UV index and different skin tone and many guidelines don't take this into account. Whilst skin cancer risk is very real and devastating, vitamin D deficiency is also very harmful to health and needs more recognition!

    • @LabMuffinBeautyScience
      @LabMuffinBeautyScience  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes! I wish there were clearer guidelines based on skin tone as well, but the UV index guidelines are very useful! I guess it could get very complex very quickly, with amount of clothing, skin surface area etc...

    • @natashad1272
      @natashad1272 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lab Muffin Beauty Science yes that's v true but at the moment most guidelines (except the Aus ones) are too blanket. I think it's also great that multiple specialties came together to develop those guidelines, which probably resulted in a more "rounded" recommendation.

    Hello!
    I live in a tropical country and was amazed to learn that a great deal of population is vitamin D defficient. While I do take care about my face and neck, I usually do not protect arms and legs but found out that still, I 'm vitamin D defficient. I'm taking supplements now and will be rechecked.
    Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention!

    I've been taking a Vitamin D supplement for years. I learned long ago that I do not tan, so never got into laying out in the sun. Skin cancer is prevalent in my family, so I've avoided being out in the sun for many years. I'm Irish, so tanning isn't our thing. Lol ....in more recent years I've become sun sensitive, so I avoid it even more. Because I've been taking a D supplement for many years, I am not deficient. I surprised a couple different doctors because majority of their patients are.

      The sun is anti-cancerous. Believe it or not. Blocking the UVA/UVB rays has detrimental effects. Vitamin D supplementation is not a replacement for full-spectrum sunlight.

    This really helped me make sense of UV protection guidelines! So far I've been using sunscreen only during mid spring and summer, because it "feels" like sun is doing damage then. And rightly so, I checked that where I live currently UV index is next to zero, and during summer it can climb up to 5. So really I should be getting more sun exposure in autumn-winter season if anything.

    LOVE this video. Simple and so informative. She is just great. The older I get the more paranoid I am about aging and dammage. If we still miss some spots with sunscreen, will those spots be at risk for cancer? I also wish I could find a video on if a steady tan is healthy or just awful? It's evolutionary, no?

    • @Cr4zyLady
      @Cr4zyLady 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know you asked this a long time ago, but I have heard a few ideas on these interesting points you make.
      Missing spots: layering a few protective options can help (sunscreen+UV foundation+hat etc.), and hopefully you wouldn't miss the same spots day after day (though yes, then they would be at risk)
      Steady tan: apparently a tan is the skin reacting to damage. The melanin we produce is not fantastic at stopping future UV, but it's the best our skin can muster (and yes, some people have an evolutionary advantage and produce more, but this only increases protection by minutes, not completely). So a tan is always a sign of sun damage, it's never 'healthy', and never completely protects.
      I'm not an expert, and this might also be incomplete information, but I found it important for myself as I always felt protected by my natural tan when I was younger 😕😮‍💨🤦

I no longer look like a burn victim. However, I still wear SPF 50 sunscreen on my face everyday (I'm very pale). I have decided to accept the risk of the UV treatments because of the profound effect they have had on my quality of life. I feel like a walking contradiction XD

      Lab Muffin Beauty Science thanks for your quick reply 🙋🏻‍♀️🌻...... You need to expose a sufficient amount of skin to sunlight to maintain healthy vitamin D blood levels. Wearing a tank top and shorts for 10-30 minutes three times per week is sufficient for lighter-skinned people, while those with darker skin may need longer. ....That's what I read ☝️

      @@dianne6046 The only good way to find out is to get your levels checked - without that information you won't know if you're unnecessarily risking skin cancer, especially in the Australian summer.
