    What the mask looks like on 1:10
    Skip to the tutorial 2:15
    Bonus tip, line it with a piece of microfiber cloth, it gets less... moist. 6:32
    The elastic is 64cm/25 inches.
    P.S. If anyones looking for ideas on where to find cable wire ties from, search the back of the wifi router, behind the TV, any boxes of electricals, boxes of kids toys, fluffy craft pipe cleaners would be good, or jewellery or gardening wire.

    Girl.... you have no idea how wonderful this pattern is. I have a very prominent bone in my nose and every mask had the bridge right on my bone putting so much pressure on it, but this pattern had a high enough nose bridge that it doesn’t hurt at all!!! I am so happy! Thank you so much!! 💗💗💗

    Thank you for posting this video. I was really skeptical at first regarding the fog free claim, but this mask really is fog free. I did zigzag stitching above the nose area and treated the stitching just like a casing. Then, I inserted 5 inches of garden wire underneath the stitching. I also made the top seam 3/8 of an inch to allow enough space for zigzag stitching.

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great idea to make the top seam bigger! My tiny seam was quite fiddly. Thank you!

    I like the straps. I work as a cook in a restaurant, were required to wear the mask if we step out in the dining room floor and we're "supposed " to wear them in the kitchen. (Try cooking in a hot kitchen full if commercial ovens,grills and deep fryers in August in Texas and being an asthma sufferer with anxiety problems) anyway I live it because I can pop the mask on and off quickly and when it's not on my face it hangs around my neck so I don't have to keep up with it! I do find that wire etc seems to dog my glasses even more, although I don't know why that should be. Anyway thanks for the tips!

    Looks good, but I personally make a small almost pocket for the wire on the lining fabric so that I can remove the wire and toss the mask in the wash. Also, for straps you can cut 3-4" of 1cm swimsuit-esque knit fabric and use those as the ear loops like you see for medical masks. I did this as a trial and it's the easiest mask to put on quickly.
    I will say though that I love your idea of using a wire twice as long as what I have, as I was going by medical mask examples that use a short thing to just hug your nose. That part doesn't fit as snug as the medical ones, but this I'd say could. 😁

    thank you! I have been making masks here in Wisconsin USA for a few months, and they have been fine, however my boyfriend was told he was going to have to start wearing mask all day long for his job at the dairy. I was concerned about the mask hurting his ears as the ones I have been making loop over the ears. But I love what you have done, and I was able to also incorporate the wire for the nose to keep his glasses from getting foggy. Thank you so very much.

    Great video Emma. I’m using T-shirt yarn for straps. Get your family to donate old T-shirts and you can find a tutorial on here. It’s nice and soft with a gentle stretch and you can have balls of all different colours to contrast with your masks.

      Do you use the t-shirt ties to actually tie the mask on or does it work like elastic?

    • @karinpapps4467
      @karinpapps4467 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ilovemypugdog I use it just like she uses the elastic. Just thread it through. You can then leave it for people to adjust for ears or cut enough to tie around head. Does this answer your question? 🦋

    Hi Emma, thank you so much for this tutorial. I've managed to make four of these masks so far for Hubby's commute to work. I'd been wondering how to solve the glassing misting up problem, so thank you so much for the nose bridge idea. I used pipe cleaners from my crafts box. I also used pieces cut from a couple of those micro fibre cleaning cloths (I love those, never without them and had a new pack in the kitchen) for the lining fabric. It worked great and Hubby is totally chuffed with his new masks, thanks Emma, I've subbed, hugs x

    Thank you do much for this video. I'm in Melbourne Australia, and we've just gone back into a 6 week lockdown because of a few clusters of cases - hey, it's better to be safe than sorry. Plus, it's cold and flu season here, so this will also help with thay. Anyways, I've decided to make some masks for myself and my family, but had hesitated because we all wear glasses and, well, fog. (I also have a medical condition that causes me to swear a lot on my face, so super fog. That last bit of advice, to add in a microfiber towel piece is perfect. And, it will also help as a bit of a filter.
    Thanks again!
    P.S. It's so nice to see someone else handsewing. I feel like we're a dying breed.

      Finally found white 1/4 flat and round elastic string on Amazon. After I made husband and I mask out of a bra in February, ran out quickly in March of bit of elastic I had a for waistband. Cut lengthwise, but very uncomfortable. Had to replace with cut up old t-shirt for string ties. Annoying to slip on and off, but soft. Try Amazon now (end of July 2020.). Choose braided as is soft. Or do the headband with buttons thing. I find headbands hot in summer.

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tracey, the wire is coated in a rubbery plastic and has a flatness to it. It measured 3 millimetres wide, but it's very flat. Inside is a silver wire. I think the plastic coating gives it more rigidity. I've also had success using garden wire. That seems to have a green plastic coating on it. I hope this helps!

    Do you know how much elastic to use if I’m making them just go around each ear? (Not all the way around my head)

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think 5 or 6 inches would fit me. You could try tying the elastic before cutting it just in case it needs adjusting. Also hair elastic(s) could be an option!

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes if you prefer the ear elastic you could try around 5 inches to see if that fits. I prefer behind-the-head elastic for wearing the mask for a long period of time. I wore my mask today for 5 hours and it was comfortable. It is a little more fiddly to put on over my head so I like a pony tail to hold the elastic firmly. Hope you find something that works for you!

    • @EmmaSandy

      I dont have a larger pattern to hand but you could open the PDF on a computer, set it to 100% size then zoom in a little further (maybe 105%?) and trace from the screen. Alternatively. You could pin the pattern to a light coloured materials and use a pencil to draw slightly further out from the pattern. Hope this helps! Stay safe.

    How bad does it shrink after washing? My mom made a few (not ur pattern) and after washing the shrunk so bad they weren't usable for an adult anylonger

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've hand washed mine lots of times and never had any shrinking problems. I have also sometimes steam ironed them to clean them. I've never had any shrinking. It might be the material that is causing the shrinking... I used 100% cotton or thick T-shirt material (that doesn't let much light through). Hope this helps!

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd try tracing the pattern from the computer screen at 60% zoom. Check the size of one inner fabric to make sure it covers half of the face enough. You could also print it out at the normal size, then cut a perimeter (id try around 2cm) from all sides. Hope this helps Barbara!

    Instead of elastic, could I use ribbon?

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that should work! I'd leave the ribbon long so it's easier to tie. A high ponytail might be needed to keep it steady if it's slipping. You could even make the ribbon tie at the top and tie it around the ponytail.
      If you're having trouble with the ribbon slipping out, you could sew it into one or two places on the sides.
      Best of luck with it!

    Hi. What kind of fabric is the lining fabric? Thanks

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is 100% cotton, quite soft but not stretchy. I got it from hobby craft in a pack of fat quarters. I've also used T-shirt fabric to make masks. Trying to select the one that let the least amount of light through & was the thickest to stop any particles with virus getting through the material. Hope this helps!

    • @EmmaSandy
      @EmmaSandy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Gisela, for a smaller mask you could set the pattern PDF on the computer screen to 90-95% size and trace it. Or, you could cut off the outside border, 0.5-1cm from a paper template. Remember to leave enough length to fold over for the final edge (where elastic threads through). Hope this helps!
