Ingram is the kind of guy who you feel like has done nothing but at the end of the game the announcers are like “another stellar performance by Brandon Ingram” and you check the box score and yeah, sure enough, he had like 19/5/5.
@@TheTemper-King he has improved his shot a lot, and is a better player now. but i dont think it's easy to say that he's all-star level, stuff like RPM and PIPM still rank him at around top 125, which may be missing some of his value, but not to the point where he'd make such a massive leap.
Love most of your analysis. Most of Ingram’s weaknesses on offense and defense was put on full display in LA. Luke very intentionally and deliberately tried to make him into a point guard and intentionally forced him to guards 1s and 2s. As someone who watched every lakers game this was most of the reason for the inconsistency. With the pels he’ll slide into a more natural role being the 3rd creator and being asked to guard his own position more. I suspect he’ll reveal who he really is and I also think we’ll see a vast improvement in his shooting. Especially based on his college shooting percentages which were really damn good from 3. His shooting mechanics are solid. The free throw percentage worries me a lil tho.
Maybe Ben should do a video on how to accurately predict someone’s shooting ability. After Lonzo happened, I stopped putting any weight into college three-point percentages and started trusting the free-throw percentage. I also know people who look at floaters to measure touch.
7 Foot Schnitzel I also put less weight on college shooting percentages. I’m sure there’s probably big correlation to freethrow percentage and 3 point percentage but I don’t think it’s the end all be all. Shooting is such a multi dimensional skill it’s hard to project growth in that area. Lebron a good example. Bad free throw shooting and above average 3 point shooter. Ingram shot 39 percent from 3 his second year and the second half of last year he was at a very high percentage as well. Now they were all on low volume but I do think he has a lot of upside as a shooter still.
Kano Briggs I actually think free-throws represent LeBron’s shooting ability pretty well. His career free throw percentage is slightly below league average and so is his career three-point percentage. In both categories, he also has some years above the league average and they tend to go further above the average on threes because the sample is lower. Anyway, I’d just love to have a study on the correlation between free-throw/threes in young years and their actual shooting ability. That’s so interesting to me

@@nblade66 I agree, to a certain degree. Ingram's improvement is not just his Jump Shooting imo, and that's why I'd love for him to revisit it. However, I do think the shooting unlocked a lot of the other areas of his game for him. It was really up to him to capitalize on those extra abilities and angles for him though. Because, if it were just his shooting that was unlocked, he would just be another bonafide 3&D player, maybe like a Bogdanovic or the other Bagdanaovic or however you say it.
@@MarcusExum97 Oh yeah, I totally agree. I didn't mean it was all his jump shot. I meant that was one of the main areas where Ben underestimated Ingram's development.
nblade66 he also underrated him athletically. BI is a pretty good athlete pretty explosive too. However he can’t do it consistently due to a lack of strength. This year as his strength has gone up so has his blow bys and crossover speed. He’s also showing more bounce than he was given credit for. Turning the corner is getting easier and easier for him. This combined with his newfound shooting touch makes the KD comparisons more and more valid
There are some positives to glean months after: He's now getting comfortable finishing with contact inside. Which compliment his ability to attack the hoop and slowly understanding to use his length to finish with that advantage. WIth his FT% numbers going up, it could mean well for his future having consistent jumper. But yeah for people trying to say he's super improved, keep in mind that he's shown the ability to put up big scoring number in short bursts in the past. The good news is he's under under Gentry now so they will definitely work on him. But he's still got a long way to go to reach that crazy ceiling of his. Otherwise he's just a long wing who can score big on bad teams.
BI issue is his lack of leg strength and overall weight. Dude gets pushed around to easily and can't jump at the end of his long strides. BI gets blocked at least once a game.
Someone came up with an old player comp for his current game: Andre Kirilenko. Both long and great instincts on defense, which is no surprise to those defensive numbers on the rise. The question really (at least after he comes back from injury) is if the Magic can start putting him at the 4. Kirilenko had a similar dilemma in his career before but in this case, the benefit is better for Isaac where he can be used against many smaller lineups.

He’s only 21-22? We still haven’t seen him at a prime physical level that I think will eventually allow him to bump people on drives. Secondly, your description better describes his first half of the season which is why it seems Incostistent. His transition last year showed him going from the 1st option to complimentary to Lebron. That second half he started making those midrange js and managed his aggressiveness better. Your anaylsis of his defense was quite truthful I think. Additionally if you look at his game from year to year he has added something useful to take his game to a higher level each time. That second half he took more in rhythm 3s which helped his efficiency there. I think his offensive game has so much room to grow. He also didn’t play that many games due to his injury -sort of. To top it off he’s also playing with an organized system and talented players around him, where I think they’re transition game is going to shine. I really feel like he has a chance at being the best player on that team this year provided he stays healthy.
What you feel or think doesn't matter. He has played almost 200 games, so to expect significant growth in the future is very unlikely indeed. He is a good player but expecting greatness is expecting too much.

You r good at this i learned about basketball and one of my favorite players Ingram can learn from this and u could have a nba job with this level of critique
Love your breakdowns man. You are one of the inspirations for why I started my channel. I made a Brandon Ingram video on my channel a few weeks ago with my take on his play style and what I feel he needs to work on to make the jump if anyone wants to see it. We see him very similar ways.
Great breakdown... now get ready to be proved REALLY wrong on that take of "hopefully top 75 NBA player this season"... Brandon Ingram is poised to position himself as an easy Top 30-40 player this year and will likely get a Max Contract offer from several teams and ultimately decide to go to the Charlotte Hornets
Great analysis as always. So on offense he’s a good tertiary offensive player at best on a good team, on defense he’s sort of Klay Thomson esque in that he’s very good at smothering smaller players with his height and length, but is susceptible to getting bullied by strength (easier than Klay mind you) so you don’t want him on a whole lot of 4s, 5s, and stronger 3s, but his length still makes him a bit switchable on a part time basis. Maybe a strong defensive coach can iron out a bit of the offball stuff, but who knows. So in an ideal situation, he should be in a switching defensive system, where can mostly guard 1s and 2s, but allows him to not have to fight over screens so much, with two higher usage offensive players, one of which should probably be a pull 3 artist. In that case, New Orleans is a really terrible fit for him cause not only does he obviously exacerbate the spacing problems they have, but they already have 2 better guard defenders in Jrue and Lonzo, plus only one high usage offensive center piece in Zion and obviously no pull up 3 guard or wing. Plus while he’s a plus passer, the pelicans already have plenty of passing between Jrue, Lonzo, and Zion, and while you can never have too much passing, his strengths are a bit redundant there. A more ideal fit would somewhere like the nets, who have 2 offensive center pieces in Kyrie and Durant, who also happen to be pull up 3 gawds who are only average to above average passers at best. Plus he could take the tougher guard assignment there, since all of their guards are varying degrees of bad at defense. Also I tend to be impressed with Kenny Atkinson as an offensive coach at least, although the nets defense has left something to be desired he past few years, although you can probably chock a lot of that up to personal. He wouldn’t exactly be a world beater there, but he’d be a decent 3rd best player and great 4th best player on that team I think, since they’d allow him to play to his strengths and mitigate his weaknesses. Maybe some kind of Ingram/Caris Levert swap would make sense for both teams
@@tepsicouch Livingston pre injury was better than Ingram is, barring injury I'm sure Ingram will become better but right now his decision making is really holding him back
My summary watching him as a Lakers fan and life long basketball player/watcher. BI, yeah he is ok/decent. Very quiet guy that never gets fired up. However, he will explode on occasion an try to assault someone on the floor. His length is amazing, only guy I have seen that can guard/stick w/ KD and bother his shot. Otherwise, I would trade him, all the Lakers young core, and a ton of draft picks for AD...oh wait that happened! :)
Ingram really is one of those young guys you want to see hit his stride. Here's hoping he does because I believe in the dude. I wonder when we'll get to see flash get his analytics review..
This guy gets it. Even though it may be easy to jump the gun asduming the Lakers over spent to get Davis, after breaking down the players involved while keeping in mind the L.A. was able to retain Kuzma, then and only then will you be able to understand the full impact of the trade.
Love your videos but could you make a video breaking down what makes players into certain levels? Like what makes all star players all stars, etc. I know there would be variation but there has to be some sort of consistentcy there or we wouldn't use those terms.
I think the "33% 3pt shooting in his career" is a bit misleading. He's was 39% as a sophomore. And he was a terrific shooter at Duke. I get the concerns with his FT shooting, but there's reason to believe there's a good shooter in there. My bigger concern is definitely with his reluctance to take them. His whole ORTG is dragged down by his shot selection.
So basically this video tells me 3 key things: 1) He needs 15-20 more pounds (230-235 is probably best since he’s already kind of slow) 2) He has the IQ and skills to be a great playmaker if that’s the route he chooses, just has to play more games so everything can slow down for him. 3) Has to learn some iso moves and be consistent with him if he wants to be a scorer. He also needs a better jump shot off the catch and/or pick and roll. A floater is good for any player in any role so I’d get consistent with that too. All that being said, he’s definitely living up to his potential imo. After he got his weight up we started to see what he was actually capable of when he didn’t look like a big ass 12 year old on the court. Now he knows what he’s good at and just needs to build on that. Pelicans treat him right and they’ve got their centerpiece.
I've watched Ingram play since day one. His first play in summer league as a rookie he drove to the basket and his leg buckled. That happened many times through out his rookie season. His legs were, and still are weak. Ingram has strengthened his legs over the last 2 seasons but even last year his right leg buckles on some of his penetrations. His defense is great when he wants to play it. At the end of games he was able to focus in and be a factor in shutting down the opposing team. His commitment to defense leaves a lot to be desired. Nobody with that length should be an OK defender. One thing that he developed last year was a face up dribble ISO at the top of the 3 point line which-given his length on drives- had to be respected by defenders; which in turn allowed him to one dribble pull up and shoot a high release mid range shot above his head. Defenders were not able to stop back pedaling and leap forward to effect his shot given his length. If Ingram can strengthen his legs and commit to playing defense all game long he will be a really good player. He is working at it. His body has gotten stronger each year and he has added elements to his offensive game piece by piece.
Floor Spacing is critical in 2019 NBA. If you don't have two 3-point shooters on your 1st Unit, your starting off 1 foot behind the current trend of NBA Championship teams.

DohanJoe07 huh? tf... I take it you haven't watched him at Duke or in la....the kid is a beast....we shoulda kept him
@@tepsicouch Livingston pre injury was better than Ingram is, barring injury I'm sure Ingram will become better but right now his decision making is really holding him back
@@vince2778 Livingston pre injury averaged 7 points per game
@@tepsicouch I guess you never watched games then? Plenty of players who average low ppg are much better players than Ingram
He became a ALL STAR‼️ NEVER DOUBT. I always believed in his abilities
Before, watching the video I believe the comp will be James Worthy.
Damn, not what I expected but great video as expected
not2famous .m he's like a more skilled version of Trevor ariza, just needs experience and a good coach who actually helps him develop...
Finally Tiny Dog got a breakdown lol
Ingram really is one of those young guys you want to see hit his stride. Here's hoping he does because I believe in the dude.
I wonder when we'll get to see flash get his analytics review..
he has
This guy gets it. Even though it may be easy to jump the gun asduming the Lakers over spent to get Davis, after breaking down the players involved while keeping in mind the L.A. was able to retain Kuzma, then and only then will you be able to understand the full impact of the trade.
Was averaging like 28 the last month or something crazy
Can u do a top 100 players video?
Love your videos but could you make a video breaking down what makes players into certain levels? Like what makes all star players all stars, etc.
I know there would be variation but there has to be some sort of consistentcy there or we wouldn't use those terms.
do a lonzo ball
pt2
I think the "33% 3pt shooting in his career" is a bit misleading. He's was 39% as a sophomore. And he was a terrific shooter at Duke. I get the concerns with his FT shooting, but there's reason to believe there's a good shooter in there. My bigger concern is definitely with his reluctance to take them. His whole ORTG is dragged down by his shot selection.
HA u was kinda wrong hes an ALLSTAR NOW
How did you find nba.com matchup data?
So basically this video tells me 3 key things:
1) He needs 15-20 more pounds (230-235 is probably best since he’s already kind of slow)
2) He has the IQ and skills to be a great playmaker if that’s the route he chooses, just has to play more games so everything can slow down for him.
WILL BE A MVP CANDIDATE BY 2021 SEASON !!!
Floor Spacing is critical in 2019 NBA.
If you don't have two 3-point shooters on your 1st Unit, your starting off 1 foot behind the current trend of NBA Championship teams.
Which is better RPM or PIPM? Would averaging RPM wins and PIPM wins be a good basis for comparing players?
I was excited to watch the young core Lakers (pre-LeBron) Im kinda Iffy on Ingram since I heard he said hes ok with just being a ok player
Video request: kemba walker breakdown?
Before watching the video: Yes!
After the video: Still Yes!

Ben do you think NBA teams use these videos for scouting reports or to help coaching? Or did they already figure this information out?
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do a video on Willie Cauley-Stein and D'Angelo Russell and their new team GS.
Jesus I did not realize how long this mans legs are, crazy strides
Can you do a analysis on Kyrie Irving
If I'm a talent scout or assistant coach, I'm secretly watching Thinking Basketball videos instead of doing my own work. :)
40 POINTS HATERS.
Let these bron stans know this dude ain’t trash
In DMS Like Deez he’s trash
Music?
Can you please do Lauri Markkanen?
he’s been cooking these past 3 games, averaging like 25 ppg
what are the advanced metrics on his on court scuffles tho, particularly when being 3rd man in?
Will you do a Kyle Kuzma analysis?
I think him playing for a competent coach this year is gonna help him improve immensely.
If you look at fan comments in any forum there is no such thing as a competent coach lmao
He's jack of many trades because he's gonna be traded many times and will achieve jack.
Think that him adding 5 - 10 lbs in muscle would help him get more explosive and body defenders more.
Do one on Kemba Walker
He has the Unicorn Factor. This guy is gonna be a machine once he gets in the zone. He needs to gain some weight though. He ain't no Durant.
Do one for aqua man...Adams 🌊🔱
How do you get all the game film?
