Lucky Louis wasn't a great show in my opinion and I'm a huge CK fan. He spoke at length afterwards about his view on it and acknowledged why it wasn't received so well. They were going for a honeymooners style with a pared back set and people didn't get it, the live studio audience was outdated at that point and people thought it was canned laughter. Some of the acting was really poor, in fact Jimmy's performance was absolutely shit and he discussed how bad of an actor he is himself numerous times.
Louis explained that there was a bit over-production at play too which was overworking the script and the punchlines, the writers room though talented was not producing a better end product and dealing with a complicated layers of staff and beurocracy was getting in the way of Louis' ability to execute on the vision.
Louis on FX ended up being the show that Louis wanted to make - it's a lot of the same premises and content, but shot and delivered in the way he wanted, without a large studio networks interference and it shows. It's far superior and the ratings and reviews showed that.
I don't think Jimmy and Louis are on speaking terms any more either, in fact I'm pretty sure Louis' material about "finding out who your real friends are" was proabbly written with Norton in mind. During Louis's scandal and before the facts came out and we could all see the nuance involved Jimmy was saying on air about how "You never really know someone" and how "We don't want to believe that we've been so wrong about a person".
They guy's a spineless little worm who can't take even the slightest criticism. I couldn't be happier he's ended up in obscurity doing some dogshit satellite radio with Sam Roberts.

I generally love Jimmy Norton and hate critics, but oof, this was not a good debate for Norton at all. You can tell Norton is trying to trash the critic's taste by insinuating he's a fan of Friends, but the critic never said he was a fan of Friends, so I'm not sure why Norton kept bringing it up. And the argument Norton makes that The (U.S.) Office can't be good because it was taken from a British sitcom is pretty ridiculous considered All in the Family and Sanford & Son were both lifted from British sitcoms as well.
To play devil's advocate, the critic could have done a much better job explaining why certain comedies are funny, instead of giving the generic "if it makes me laugh, it's good" line.

I love Jimmy, but I have to agree with the critic here. I liked Lucky Louie, but it was a bit clunky and dull at times. I enjoyed it enough to watch through and it has some hilarious moments, but it's not one I go back to. C.K.'s second show, Louie, is much better in my opinion and remains one of my all-time favorites.

This guy gave his reasons & Jim just completely dismissed him. Jim was just to thin skinned about this.
It’s not like the same lame comment of “This show sucks” with no follow up reason as to why.
When you say “This is a good show/movie people hardly question you. But say “this show/movie sucks because….” you’ll easily get questioned. And most that do get offended are hard to argue with. It’s not about convincing that person/people to change their mind. It’s about understanding why they don’t like something. Again your reasons are opinion based.

  • @NxDoyle

I've written and deleted two comments. They started on topic and quickly degenerated into telling you all (again) how much I despise Opie and the reasons why. So, third time's the charm.
I love Jimmy and I thought his work in Lucky Louie was really solid. And people who work in the arts shouldn't feel they can't engage with critics. But Jim's vitriolic response to negative critiques is a tacit admission that his feelings are hurt.
There's an old saying amongst thesps that "those who cannot do review". It's a flippant line, but it sometimes holds true. But unless the reviewer is clearly coming after the production with a view to ruining it, you generally just have to suck it up.
I know that Louis felt as if some critics were doing just that, because some of the criticism was so visceral that it was reflected in the venom of their critiques. Lucky Louie was not an easy ride for audiences, and some critics. The problem with the critics' gig is that they are working to a deadline and don't have time for nuance. So if they watch three screeners plus god knows what else in a week, chances are your form-bending 18+ multi-camera studio sitcom is not going to get the finely limned critique it deserves.
You just have to suck it up and move on, sometimes.

I'd say you have a point, but I absolutely disagree with the guy's opinion of the "Why?" scene, and his idiotic "four letter words" comment. Jimmy hit the nail on the head when he said "That's just how people talk." It's refreshing to see a sitcom use that kind of language completely uncensored, and I'd disagree with anyone who said that language was overused. That is how people talk, and if you think it's overused in this show, you're probably far more sensitive than the target audience. Not to mention the *blatant* dishonesty of this cunt when he implies the studio audience's laughter is awkward and forced. He deserves most, if not all, of Jimmy's rage during this segment.

You using the phrase "comically bad" to describe a bad sitcom for some reason made me think of a joke by an old comedian from the UK called Bob Monkhouse. His joke was:
"They all laughed at me when I said I wanted to be a stand-up comedian... well they're not laughing now..."
