I had the privilege to pick this man up back in '91 hitch hiking outside of Beaverton Oregon. Most down to earth dude, regular guy, and a legend. I was sad to hear of his passing.
Roddy Piper was a more formidable fighter than many people realize. He was a skilled boxer who earned a black belt in Judo under Gene LeBell. While most of his contemporaries were pressing huge amounts of weight and juicing with steroids in the gym, Roddy Piper was hitting the bag, and sparring with boxers, catch wrestlers, and judo competitors.
I know a guy that was friends with him growing up and he was indeed a tough guy. He described him as a skinny kid with acne that knocked out full grown men with one punch, np.
The more i read and see on this guy the more i know deep down he was a Legend in every sense of the word "it's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and i'm all outta gum" RIP Roddy
Met gene at a judo tourney and met rowdy at team quest and trained with rowdy's son. Mad respect to both men. My dad even took on gene's moniker in honor of him when entering into mma.
We miss you Hot Rod! You were a good man in an industry full of not so good men. So glad that your daughter Teal is following in your footsteps. She is a sweet young lady.
Man, piper sees the long game He’s got a great vantage point to see the problems. I imagine he have Riowdy Ronda some good pointers. A great guy, got outbid to buy his leather jacket at a show. A class act he may be gone but I’m still a fan
One of my childhood heroes. What a mind. People thought he was just a big-mouth but you listen to what he says he's totally right about this. Those MMA fighters make around $12,000.00 a year, olympic athletes make less, nothing and have to pay for their own training, our gov't doesn't pay for any of it. Isn't that great!!
I never knew Piper with his real voice. He faked me out...lol. Wish I would have had a chance to meet the guy, but he has gone to better place. We miss you Piper!!!
Funaki and Sayama started Shooto before the UFC was around, I think like 1986ish. Japanese Shootfighting and Brazilian Vale Tudo were the parents of MMA.
Too bad nobody will listen to Rowdy Rod. I quit watching "wrestling" not long after he and Hulk fought out Wrestlemania. Roddy was my favorite. I was pissed he lost. "They Live" is an awesome movie, and I'll fight anyone that says differently. Peace.
MMA started out as guys of one style vs other guys with only one style though. MMA originally meant that all martial arts were allowed. Rather than karate vs karate or judo vs judo, the competition was "mixed", hence "mixed martial arts". It referred to the competition, not the competitors themselves. Watch the early UFCs. All the matches were like "karate vs judo" and shit like that. Of course it has evolved far beyond that now, but that's how it started back in the day.
Its a shame most people dont know who Judo Gene LeBell is. Hes up there with Bruce Lee. This guy is a true American Martial artist bad ass. Trained Bruce Lee in Grappling. All Bruce knew was striking until Gene taught him. Olympic gold medal winner in Judo as well. Also made Steven Seagal shit his pants haha
The wisest words ever spoken sir. Gym wars are where every fighter develops slurred speech - NOT the fights. Train hard but please train smart. Pretty please, with sugar on top?
Roddy has a blackbelt under gene, I don't how much he knows, specifically, in regards to gi grappling, or if it's more just an honorary thing. Though, he mentioned hooking so he's probably familiar with the catchwrestling influence of prowrestling and gene's style of mixed grappling style.
Ive been saying this about these flakey MMA camps that have sprout up like weeds all over,Im a traditionally trained Judo guy with Boxing and traditional Karate and and as rough and all out as we allways went we allways had very astute and competent trainers supervising us and stopping things before someone got injured. My teacher always said no the difference between hurt and injure. Now days I see my nephew come home from MMA training beat all to hell and has only learned to be a punching bag.
I've always loved Rowdy. As a kid he was my favorite wwf superstar. Have Scottish nationality so I love the Kilt & the Bagpipes. I just recently found Gene Lebell and watching videos about him and reading articles & I think he's a real badass in a real fight like Piper said. Wikipedia's article about Gene is not very flattering. Calling into question about his affiliation with Bruce Lee. They he's a phony & I don't believe that. Watch the guy you can tell that his stories are sincere.
Brocks problem wasn't taking free damage in training. Brocks problems was no one was allowed to hit Brock in training. So when he got the the fights he couldn't handle being hit.
It happens to be a great movie period, regardless of the fact that a pro wrestler is in it but it certainly is the best movie with a pro wrestler in it. Roddy is the FUCKIN MAN! They Live is one of the best movies ever, it's astoundingly underrated and fucking awesome! "Gloria....you look like shit!" "Hey bahhhby, what's wrong.".......roll credits Does it get any better than that?
Basically, Dana White gets rich off of his fighters without paying them what they deserve and earn and not taking care of the people who make him rich. Another Vince McMahon and Don King.
Piper has always struck me as the absolute nicest, sincere, humble and humble pro wrestler. He tells it like it is and gives credit where it is due.
Far and away the best man pro wrestling ever knew. R. I. P., Rowdy.
@Tim Cotton 👌👍👏
Not only was Rowdy a great actor in and out of the ring; he was a great guy and a REAL average joe when you would meet him. RIP, straight shooter.
He did have acting chops, loved him in John Carpenter's "They Live"
I had the privilege to pick this man up back in '91 hitch hiking outside of Beaverton Oregon. Most down to earth dude, regular guy, and a legend. I was sad to hear of his passing.
It`s so sad he died so soon..He was a bit of a mixed martial artist himself..He knew wrestling, judo, and boxing..
He was right about MMA training and the lack of care for the athletes especially at the amateur level
RIP to the last real class act...
He still juiced, but not to such a ridiculous amount. Loved that guy. For such a tough beginning in life, we was a very good man. RIP Hot Rod
He really was one of a kind haha one of the most entertaining and legit pro wrestlers ever
I know a guy that was friends with him growing up and he was indeed a tough guy.
He described him as a skinny kid with acne that knocked out full grown men with one punch, np.
Had a good amateur record as well. His name is judo gene Labelle but he was actually a catch wrestler before judo.
He did one hell of an acting job in the movie “They Live”.
I came to chew bubblegum and kick ass!....and i'm all out of bubblegum.
I watched they live last night fucking amazing film way ahead of its time
Always loved Roddy back in the day and here he just won my eternal respect!
The more i read and see on this guy the more i know deep down he was a Legend in every sense of the word
"it's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and i'm all outta gum"
RIP Roddy

Wise words from a legend.. RIP roddy
We miss you Hot Rod! You were a good man in an industry full of not so good men. So glad that your daughter Teal is following in your footsteps. She is a sweet young lady.
All you can eat turkey legs and blueberry pie? Take me there now.
Roddy Piper was a first-class gentleman, through and through. RIP, Rowdy Rod.
They Live is a sci-fi classic and Roddy was great in it!
Roddy Piper, good man with some good ideas. Who's taking care of the fighters? Hopefully they have a manager that is as wise as Piper.
Roddy was a Class Act, miss him. Judo Gene Le Bell is a great guy. A Gentleman, love him.
Hits the nail right on the head regarding unions...
Greatest of all time! Love you Rod!
Just imagine the financial ups and downs this guy had in his life he was on top and he was on the bottom what a rocky road piper walked

A wise and respectful man!
I've always wanted to see it, but never had the time. Thanks for reminding me about it. I'm gonna go watch it now. Peace.
RIP 2 one of da greatest always talks straight up
One of my childhood heroes. What a mind. People thought he was just a big-mouth but you listen to what he says he's totally right about this. Love Gene..... He would come in to Honda of North Hollywood weekly.. The most fascinating individual I have ever talk to. RIP 🙏 GENE
I used to love Rowdy Roddy Piper in his wrestling days, now I pove his appearances on Sunny in Philly.
SO underrated in always sunny lol, fucking great
Roddy Piper was one of the greatest. 🤼🏽♂️
A wheelbarrow of respect for Mr. Piper.
I miss HOTROD; What a great story teller.
R.I.P. Hot Rod !
Agreed! They Live is hands down the best movie with a pro wrestler in it.
Mr Piper, we miss you, you brother are wrestling! RIP
I never knew Piper with his real voice. He faked me out...lol. Wish I would have had a chance to meet the guy, but he has gone to better place. We miss you Piper!!!
Karl Gotch, John Pesek, Stanislaus Zbyszko, judo gene LeBelle and Masakatsu Funaki come to mind when I think about the godfathers of mma.
Funaki and Sayama started Shooto before the UFC was around, I think like 1986ish. Japanese Shootfighting and Brazilian Vale Tudo were the parents of MMA.
And Billy Robinson
We miss you Pipper
Rip. piper I remember see u at the Olympic auditorium When I was only 7 years old
ROWDY RODDY PIPER BABY!! HE'S THE MAN!!!!
I watched a video of Hackman awhile back. He said in his gym he's not letting people go full contact when they spar anymore.
Rest up Hot Rod love you bro R.I.P
They Live
Great movie also has the best fight scene in movie history and one of the greatest quotes "i'm here to chew gum and kick ass and i'm out of gum".
Too bad nobody will listen to Rowdy Rod. I quit watching "wrestling" not long after he and Hulk fought out Wrestlemania. Roddy was my favorite. I was pissed he lost.
"They Live" is an awesome movie, and I'll fight anyone that says differently. Peace.
Some really truth words!
So sad watching this. R.I.P.
Gene tells the blueebrry pie story in his book, too, "The Godfather Of Grappling".

This is relative today. Fighters being thrown away and not being taken care of today.
my favorite wrestler.

btw, "They Live" is an awesome movie with an awesome Rowdy Roddy Piper!!
mama don't like tattletales.-rowdy rod.
The bottom line is in the world of combat sports the only thing that’s square is the ring. Apollo Creed said it best; “Be a thinker...not a stinker”.
Yes, I agree with my comment.Thankyou!
RIP...

Brocks problem wasn't taking free damage in training. Brocks problems was no one was allowed to hit Brock in training. So when he got the the fights he couldn't handle being hit.
