    Excited because I didn't know that Domus Aurea still existed and that one can go there. I'm absolutely looking forward to the next year to look all this beautiful art by myself. 👍

      of course it does, you silly goose. it is a seminal source of the Renaissance art of painting, decoration and architecture. It is the most complete Roman palace complex to survive until today. the reason was it complete burial by Trajan (after stripping it clean of all that could be removed and reused). it was buried because it was made of very thick and hard Roman concrete. it was too expensive to raise it to the ground. so instead it was filled up with dirt and new structures built over it. NOW, those other structures are gone, but the Domus survive, complete with its grottos and grotto art.

    *Domus Aurea - The Palace of Nero*
    For us, the Domus Aurea is the most impressive monument of Roman architecture. The height of the rooms and the dimensions of the halls are nearly unbelievable

    I visited the Domus Aurea twice. Once when it was just opened to visitors and allowed more leisure. The 2nd time not so much time to explore. Even with the much stripped away , it is magnificent and so appreciated the video that captured the vastness and size. Hope to visit again for the 3rd time soon. Thank you for filming.

      Thank you again for your wonderful comments! I think it was luck! We visited the Domus Aurea 2014. We did not know that it was opened only for three months, because they installed a new drainage system. After our visit they closed the monument again until 2018. So we think that not many people knew that it was open! You can download the video and show it your kids, but not public and not in the internet! All the best and have a great time!

    The Coliseum is cool an all... but an almost intact Imperial Palace is mind blowing, the level of engineering for it to actually survive being buried for almost 2 milenia is quite a accomplishment, the only other ancient structure I would have loved to visit is the Temple of Artemis, too bad it was destroyed in a fire :c

      Thank you very much for your outstanding comment! I share the opinion regarding the Domus Aurea! Its sad what happened with the Temple of Artemis, but also impressive ( a little bit smaler) are the Temple of Paestum, near Salerno! All the best and have a fantastic time!

    Big question is how much of this building was pillaged by the church under the various pope's for the construction of St Peters. All the probably gorgeous marble decorations as can still be seen in the Pantheon have been stripped off the walls .The amount of ensuing breakage can only be guessed at.
    The glorious buildings of the Imperial city were likewise mined for use even to the very bricks they were constructed of . A huge cultural tragedy.

    • @myvideomedia
      @myvideomedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you very much for your great comment! Most of that what you say is correct, but St.Peters was build in the 3th century. Domus Aurea was destroyed 80 p. Chr. So I think the most of the material was used for the collosseum and the baths of Titus and Trajan. Best wishes and have a great time!

      @Bruce Burns
      The Protestant revolution (the Dissolution of Monasteries) under Henry VIII between 1536 and 1541destroyed over 800 monasteries. What was left standing was further destroyed under his son Edward who had whitewashed over wall paintings in most churches, smashed stained glass windows, destroyed statues. burnt rood screens, smashed baptism fonts, etc. Every cathedral to every small parish church suffered some form of vandalism.
      This is just an example of England. Switzerland also experienced the destruction of its medieval art. Swiss churches built before 1500, their interiors were colorfully painted...they were not intended to be white.

      Thanks for the great comment! The Domus Aurea should have been open to tourists again since 2018. It was temporarily closed to tourists because water seeped in and a drainage system was installed. Probably the safety of the visitors could not always be guaranteed because of falling plaster. We were there as tourists and the visit was even free. However, at that time the Domus Aurea was only open for 3 months. Greetings and all the best!

    And the peak point of the excursion is the VR presentation where the palace is shown in full magnificence...
    Interestingly Trayan wanted to destroy the memory of Nero and covered his palace with a hill - by this the place was preserved much better than Palatine palaces that were luted by the "people of Rome"

    Warum liegt es scheinbar alles unter der Erde? Oder wurden die Fenster zugemauert? Oder ist es tatsächlich heute im Erdreich aufgrund der Anhebung des Bodenniveaus?

    • @myvideomedia
      @myvideomedia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Vielen Dank für ihr Interesse! Es wurde sehr viel Erdreich in die Domus Aurea eingebracht, da oberhalb die Trajans Thermen gebaut wurden, um dem Volk von Rom das Gelände wieder zurück zu geben. Die Fenster sind wohl nicht zugemauert, sondern lediglich mit Erdreich verschüttet, weshalb relativ viel Wasser eindringen konnte. Deshalb wurden die letzten Jahre Drainageleitungen eingebaut. Viele Grüße!

      I am heading to Europe in the near future for the first trip outside of Australia now I am retired and we have no history of the European style to talk of as this continent has been pretty desolate and mildly populated , so I cannot wait to feast my eyes on the Roman ruins for the first time as I am amazed at the quality and the style of that civilisation , the marble and metal work are stunning not to mention the lingering effect of the Roman civilisation in our daily lives right now , amazing .
