Was Hannibal Barca Black?

  • In this video Dr. Rebecca Futo Kennedy answers our question as to whether or not Hannibal Barca the great Carthaginian General that made Rome tremble was black?
    We discuss arguments that rage online involving the Punic Peoples, Phoenicians, Berbers and etc, when it comes to race and ethnicity in the ancient world.
    We also discuss the confusion and complexity of identity in ancient North Africa since a variety of peoples and cultures have mixed through years of population movements in Antiquity.
    Finally when we leave off we come to the conclusion that (1) he skin color doesn't matter, (2) we will realistically never know and (3) in the end he is a great military leader who will always be known in the history of Africa.

      @matius bond now you are pulling another fallacy by mixing up to separate terms. Caesar and Alexander were not white, but they were caucasian, thus there were empires in North Africa dominated by a caucasian society. You don’t need to have white skin to be Caucasian, just as you don’t need be sub-saharan african to have dark skin. When your claims get challenged, or even accepted, you begin to back-peddle like all these other yakubian hotep retards. You came here bitching caesar wasn’t white, then when you realized no one disputed that, not a single damn person in this entire videos comments, you turned to “caucasians never had an empire in ancient africa” You just want to be in a perpetual state of struggle, victimizing yourself for no reason. There are plenty of sub-saharan peoples to discuss and be proud of, but you insist on stealing from others history. I feel sorry for you.

      I was thinking something similar, but I think similarities are superficial, although we can discard the silliness of him being black. But in regards to him looking white, the beard is too curly, as well as, I suspect, his head hair from what's visible. Also, his nose is too large, lips are too full, and eyes a tad too large to be nordic (white).
      What i see is a Mediterranean person. If you want to mis-appropriate Mediterraneans as white, that may be your prerogative, but beyond superficialities, I don't see it.

    Was Hannibal White as in Northern European White is not what was asked and who really cares, the question was was he Black as in Sub Saharan Black. Rebecca is obviously scared that she will never get a job at a University if she actually answers the question of was Hannibal Black? From the bust she displays the only thing that is obvious is Hannibal is portrayed as a generic Mediterranean type who might be a shade paler than Muammar Gaddafi or he might be a fairly dark shade of brown. The only thing that can be said is that his features aren't Sub Saharan Black which is the question and it would probably end Rebecca's career if she tried to actually answer it.

    I'm Egyptian and it's incredibly hard for me to tell if someone is Moroccan, Libyan, Egyptian, Levantine or Iranian just by looks. most people from Iran to morocco have very comparable features. yes there are black people in all those nations but they are a minority. Even North Sudanese people look very different than South Sudanese ones. It's not so hard to see why people living in the desert, and speaking the same family of languages are more related to people living in heavily forested areas were every few meters the language is different, sometimes belonging to a totally unrelated family. I'm sorry but it is just the fact of the matter that people from Tunisia or Algeria are more related to people from the levant than they are to people of West Africa. Tamazight, Ancient Egyptian, Syriac, Aramaic, Ge'ez, Phoenician, Hebrew, and Arabic are all Afroasiatic languages originating on the coast of the Red Sea. Bantu and Nigerian Congo languages have nothing to do with that. I wish Afrocentrists would stop trying to steal North African and Middle Eastern cultures. We should be asking what roles did black Africans black play in their society because the evidence speaks for itself. The concept of white superiority didn’t exist. Africans we’re loved by the Greeks,then feared after the moorish invasion, then used as signs of wealth in pre 1600 Europe. There’s literally black people in every part of history. With Hannibal buress there’s a good chance he’s African or Mediterranean which back in in those times were just lighter skinned Africans that matriculated down from west Africa. Most of these so called finds and history comes from William Henry Holmes a famous archeologists and a known Eurocentric who has been accused of forgeries such as the Egyptian white lady which they did find out was a fake and many more. Punic was a South Caanite Language, while Hebrew is a North Caanite Language. We know that the Berber groups were the main ones to mix with the Phoenicians, and even in Isolated Berber Villages today, they still are similar to modern North Africans.
      This is backed up by the genetic composition of modern Tunisians. They're a majority of Berber mixed with a lesser extent of Phoenician and with around 20% being mainly Arab and European mix (though the Arab is usually a majority of that common ~20%, with the European being less than 10%.) They weren't Black nor European. They were Berber.

First off, who is "_they_ " ? And secondly, if the term "white" is "not a category" then neither was "black". But where is her evidence to say otherwise? I'd certainly like to see it. And what " _lots of things_ " could Hannibal possibly be? I would like to see evidence for this as well but she never says. It is a fact that Hannibal descended from Phoenicians of the Levant and that his ancestors settled in Carthage and if were going to be logically objective, may have had some possible Berber admix. Phenotypically he looks typical of Mediterranean stock, facial hair and all. The host is appeasing a certain certain group of people feel good about themselves at the expense of historical facts and in pushing the blanket-narrative that he was "African". He may have been "African" geographically, but the problem here for racists is that he was not black African and that much is obvious. (Neither were the ancient Egyptians).

    Looking in the field of ancient numismatics, there is a Carthaginian coin minted and issued in Carthaginian Spain during the decade of 230-220BC before the outbreak of the second punic war (221-204 BC). " On the obverse is Hannibal portrayed as Melqarth who corresponded to the Greek god Hades. Numismatists have 2 reasons for believing that the portrait incorporates the features of a young Hannibal: First, prior to this coin, Melqarth was usually depicted as older and bearded; and second, the head displays some of Hannibal's individual features, such as his sideburns, his heavy brows, and his sharp nose. It is known that when Hieronymus, the boy king of Syracuse, allied himself with Hannibal, he grew sideburns as well, as a sign of his allegiance. The portrait wears the Laurel wreath, as was appropriate for both gods and victorious generals."
    Known as the Hannibal Coin, "This Coin has no auction appearance in recent history, although an example from the famous Richard Cyril Lockett collection sold in London in 1955 for 1070 pounds."

      @@Pouncealot2023 nope. it's a mahout. that's not even a carthaginian coin. It's from Capua, Italy. The only coins we know to have been struck directly under hannibal are from his occupation of bruttium, Italy, and they bear a female janiform head (electrum) and a regular female head (silver). Was Hannibal a chick now too? Some Numismatists think a head of melquart on silver shekel denominated coins struck in Iberia during the time of hannibal and his dad hamilcar is meant to resemble hannibal and his dad, but, others deny there is evidence for that. the statue bust shown in this video's thumbnail is the only image of hannibal known to be attributed to being him. not black. makes sense. his ancestry was completely levantine phoenician. maybe the Numidian horsemen in his army were closer to what you'd call black. they weren't carthaginian.

      @Ario 1 Hannibal less so. But the ancient Egyptians definitely. They did have a mixed population as Egypt became more cosmopolitan, and through invasion. But they were from a predominantly/originally black east African base. I'm using" black" as a general ethnographic base, similar to the USA being as "white" culture. There's just too much anthropological evidence that points to the interior of Africa in terms of precursor cultures, contemporary, and remnants.

    • @Hevander75
      @Hevander75 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Ario 1 you saying "all" is not true. But I am aware of the DNA study show mummies being related to Syriac and turkic people in one particular area near modern-day cairo. The study doesn't mention that that area was actually formally an allotted settlement for what I believe were mercenaries from the near east. Either way, you can pick DNA from one particular area and extrapolated the whole region/civilization over time. The Rameses III study showed him to part of a haplogroup with currently highest occurrences in west and central Africa. You can readily find a snippet of the study which was highly publicized. I personally haven't check enough to find the whole paper.

    • @Hevander75
      @Hevander75 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Ario 1 I'm being pretty objective here. I would same for the Carthaginian civilization. It clearly has little to no anthropological ties to interior Africa even if black Africans lived there. The cultural base was clearly Levantine with strong Greco/Roman influences. I would agree with saying Hannibal was most likely of Levantine or broadly north Mediterranean descent since there's more anthropological evidence towards that argument.

Tell that today to millions of Northern Africans from Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Lybia, and convince them they are black. And don't even dare to say they are strictly of Arabic origin, and were thus later invaders, since the Berbers of this region are as indigenous of peoples as you can get, and they are not black. You can not just smash such diverse peoples into one group or category by force. First of all, Africa as an idea of whole and undivided continent stems from European point of view, as does Asia. There are huge differences between people from western, southern, central and eastern Asia, that is plainly obvious. And I mean, racial, physical differences. As there are between Sub-Saharan and Northern Africa. When people say Asian they rarely mean people from the Middle-East, they think of East Asians. And even that is not fair, as East Asians represent some of the most diverse and numerous peoples and languages, and its difficult to just group them together. Just like in Africa. There are clear physical characteristics in the north, and in the ones south of the Sahara. There are obviously some overlapping and mixed groups and areas, and its fair to say its a complex question that needs complex answers, but this pussyfooting around answers and questions that have been overly politicized, just because someone can get offended, does disservice to everyone!
