Interview with Juan Atkins: "I wish people would be more open-minded!"

  • We spoke to the 'Godfather of Techno' just after his keynote interview at Midem, June 8, 2015.
Atkins notably commented the evolution of electronic music since his genre-defining "Clear" (made as Cybotron in 1983) and the EDM sound championed today by artists like Skrillex. "I would never speak negatively about someone who has been successful at electronic music," said Atkins. "I wish that he could probably be a little bit more funky; but I'm not going to be mad at the guy!"
He does, however, "wish people would be more open-minded, to things like what I do. It's not enough to say 'he's the creator of techno'; I still don't fit that marketing model, so they don't really get it."
That said, "I'm totally happy with where I am. Because if I had a major hit, it would probably have to be diluted to fit that model. And I'm not into diluting my music."
Neither, added Atkins, is the new generation of "kids" he mentioned in his keynote, which now prefers to buy drum machines rather than guitars. "The stuff they're coming up with is not a conventional sound. Yet the marketers want it to stay conventional, because that's what made all their money."
He also commented that "not enough people know" that electronic music is it is today would probably not exist without him. We do! "Well that's cool, I'm glad you know," said Atkins!

Juan Atkins style is way ahead of its time and was in the 80s/90s. Always ahead of the game. People don’t understand the soul that goes into this kind of music.

Giorgio De Chirico is sad that techno pioneers and house music is still underappreciated till this day don't get me wrong not everyone should like techno but respect is origins and the forefathers of the genre and any genre of music. I love the Belleville three all had their own unique style and don't bite or trying to steal each style unlike nowadays music scene sadly. I hope more people these days appreciate great music and artists such as the Belleville three group of Detroit.

Juan Atkins is not underappreciated. Techno is not underappreciated. They are genuinely appreciated by their fans. As The Man said, commercial DJ's have way more fans and therefore make way more money. These people came along later and commercialised the music. This happens to any art form so it's not endemic to Detroit or Chicago's music. Like The Man said, it's not a bad thing. The music Industry markets consumable music for the larger consumer market. Juan did what he wanted to do, got his own records pressed and started his own label, was the distributer. Most people aren't ready to do that kind of work, especially when a red carpet has already been rolled out right in front of them. Totally different markets on totally different trajectories.

It seems like many artists that are in the electronic scene stick with the same style and vibe. The same BPM and the same beats. Why not do different feels and approaches to such a awesome medium that has limitless potential.

I totally agree. Techno music as pioneered by Juan isn’t as much about a cultural sect or genre or scene as much a (logical) evolution of music, just like rhythm and blues, jazz or Gregorian Chant. Just new ways to create and enjoy music

I find this style of music is like coffee. Starbucks exists because you have to have consistency. You want to know what you can expect, and what you're gonna get. 70s reggae: whatever it is, the record's gonna be good. Juan understands this but not everyone making some music to an electro beat and calling it techno does. This means there's a big inconsistency in quality within the genre. Bigger than in most genres. This is a cause for the genre as a whole not being taken up. There was a nepotism as its core which corrupted the music.

And 6 years later, Detroit Techno is still classic, Skillrex is no longer the flavour of the week, and mindless hacks are getting record deals for making puffy cute lips on TikTok. It will all pass, only quality will remain.

All of these so called modern techno artist are under the banner of techno, but none of them are truly techno exponents!. They are electronic musicians, but not techno artists!. Without the funk, and on the one pocket groove, It cannot be techno!. Techno is a style!. Case in point, examples like Nucleus and Egyptian lover, are examples of the techno style! European (electronic pop) has no groove or pocket!. It's not on the one!. Kraftwerk had more pocket than today's Euro electronic pop!.💯🎯

It's the syncopation/funk that Kraftwerk didn't have. But the Kraftwerk beat, yes. Detroit techno uses the Kraftwerk beat but sounds completely different because the machines trigger at different times and are not locked.
