In our latest Elder Scrolls video we have a fun little discussion about Alduin and Mehrunes Dagon facing off.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

I'd love to see a timeline where Mehrunes Dagon succeeded in the Oblivion crisis, only for Alduin to show up later. That would be very chaotic.
Well it’s the Dragonborn destiny to defeat alduin, so it will happen no matter what.

Jagar Tharn fully controls the empire, but daggerfall is freed because of the nuimidium and Morrowind freed by Dagoth Ur. Jagar Tharn calls Dagon to help him but Dagon invades with the help of mankar. Tharn flees to skyrim. The talmor take the opportunity to do there thing. And then Alduin comes and this a big showdown between all the villans

Dragons can only be permanently killed by a Dragonborn. Alduin included. Alduin in Tamriel cannot even be slain there. The one thing that can kill him, had to go to Sovngarde and use a shout specifically meant to make a dragon mortal and even then he was not killed permanently, his soul was taken by something else. Dagon cannot use Dragonrend and so cannot kill Alduin, and cannot kill Alduin's armies because Alduin can revive them again and again. It is entirely possible that Alduin can actually consume Dagon as he does the world. Lorewise, Dagon cannot kill Alduin, and even in his weakened state Alduin just cannot be beaten by anything other than a Dragonborn with Dragonrend.

Alduin is not Akatosh. They are fractions of Aka and Alduin is "created" by Akatosh but they are separate entities.

Then there's the fact that the Dragons *ARE* made from the residual magicka of the Aedra from creating Nirn----including Akatosh.

"Firstborn of Akatosh" is a figure of speech that refers to him not existing until time (Akatosh) flows.
He's not a fraction of Akatosh. You need to study your lore better. Auriel is the start of time, Akatosh is time as it passes and Alduin is the ending of time. Aka and Akatosh are on different levels. Being a fraction of Aka does not make you a fraction of Akatosh. Hit the books.
Look at it like this: Mehrunes Dagon has yet to succeed once in his attempts at world domination. While Alduin has only failed once in the however many times he has destroyed the world.
He wasn't even trying to destroy the world this time around, he was trying to rule it.

Dagon never failed either, because he is the Prince of rebellion and change. He accomplished just that by creating a rebellion and altering the course of history during the Oblivion Crisis. So Dagon didn't really fail, as he wasn't necessarily trying to destroy Nirn either. Still, Alduin was stopped by the Dragonborn and was killed. Dagon was met by the Champion of Cryodiil, the Dragonborn Emperor, and f***ing Akatosh himself... Alduin seems a lot less impressive in comparison. I mean, there's probably a reason he only messes with Nirn and not the planes of Oblivion.
I would give this to Alduin because of what he represents and, thus, is. Alduin is the destructive aspects of time, that is to say, he is literally _entropy._ While entropy can be delayed, as we did in Skyrim, it can never be stopped. Eventually everything does end. To give an IRL example, Alduin is *the heat death of the universe.*

As I see it, like the lore states, the daedra are more powerful than the aedra since they kept all their power by not sacrificing part of it to create nirn, and since Alduin is just an aspect or a ”son” of Akatosh he’s not even a full aedra, which would overall make him significantly less powerful than Dagon.
But as said in the video the circumstances are hard to decide for who would win. And as said in other comments here, daedra lose a vast majority of their power when they enter the mortal plane, and even then they’re mostly just avatars of themselves.
I would say that in mundus or the mortal plane where Alduins powers were actually meant to be used, since his purpose was to be the end of time and a part of the rebirth cycle of the mortal plane of existance, he would be more powerful since as said previously, Dagon would lose a vast amount of his power just by entering mundus.
If the fight or whatever was in Dagons plane of Oblivion however he would definitely win 100% since a daedras realm is literally just parts of themselves. Also time has no meaning in Oblivion so if you are an aspect of the god of time you have literally no power there.
So deciding a winner is almost impossible since you have to match two enteties from basically different realities.

true but I don't se the reason why alduin would bother with coming to the plains of oblivion to stop him since he can stop any plans dagon has in the normal world making it pointless for him to go there and alduin has the power to resrect dragons on the spot meaning that dagons army would be dimnished and need time to replenish while alduins army is practicly infeate since he can keep it up at much higher speeds of resurection and I don't se how anyone excpt dagon could even fight a dragon in the plains of oblivion so it would literlay be dagon vs all dragons at once even in his own plain I don't know if he could win that
Tobias Ahlin The thing is that in a daedras realm, everything is the daedra. The air the dragons would fly in, the ground they’d land on, everything would be Dagon. He could make it literally impossible for them to even exist in his realm. Nothing can beat a daedric prince in their own realm if they don’t let you. But I get what you’re saying with that ultimately Dagon WANTS to invade nirn, but Alduin has no reason to go into Oblivion, so in that sense I could see Alduin being the winner since he has controll over the desired ”territory”
In the end it’s up to how you see the victory condition.
Robin Ydal That isn't exactly how it seems to work. While Dagon physically is his plane of Oblivion, if he could simply smite anything that walked on it, his plane would be an impregnable Fortress, which we know isn't true as the protagonist in TES 4 was able to enter and exit without simply dying. Imagine this, his plane is his body, his vessel, and just as any other creature, he can't simply purge it of parasites, or in this case, other beings. Being a god however, he can manifest his power in his own body and take a physical form, but even so, if Alduin can consume all of Nirn, then he's clearly capable of more devastating powers than we've seen.
yeah Im not sure the Daedra have anywhere near that much control within their realms, they're more like greater daemons than Chaos Gods.
You could say their planes are "small nirms" but from being their "pure essense" they get weaker when away from it but they don't seem to have the same properties of their creators to take any form, else they could destroy anything that set foot on there which don't seem to be the case

And because he was heavily weakened, in his most powerful form he could kill dragonborn with a sneeze, but because at the time of the main questline the kalpa wasn't supposed to end so he couldn't use it
@Juggled Lotus Are you an IDIOT? Even if all the Nords know how to use dragonrend it wouldn't still be enough since Alduin can not die, even the dragonborn can't absorb his soul. The Dragonrend's purpose was to cripple the dragon for a short amount of time, in other words the shout forces a dragon to experience the concept of mortality, not to kill it. It doesn't matter how many times you slash him, as long as you're not the dragonborn, you will not be able to wound Alduin. Alduin lost to the "3 nords" because they had an elder scroll which they used to banish Alduin temporarily, without the scroll tamriel would've been doomed during that time. Alduin cannot be defeated, he's one of the entities that makes up reality in that world, he's The END. Even though Alduin lost or what u all call "defeated" in the last skyrim questline, he did not die. We can see that as he vanished or exploded in Sovngarde, he did not leave any bones nor the dragonborn absorbed his soul.

I believe the story “The Seven Fights of The Aldudagga” is on the Imperial Library if I’m not mistaken (pardon me if I got the title of the story wrong). Basically this fight already happened. It was stated that Dagon was the only
Daedric Prince brave enough (or foolish enough depending on who you ask) to wake Alduin in his slumber. The end result was Dagon getting washed by Alduin every time he did it…………..Also if we took Alduin with an army of dragons vs Dagon with an army of Daedra, Alduins army would wash given Daedra can be beaten or pressed by mortals from Nirn without the Thu’um (even the weakest dragon in ES is directly tied to the concept of time spiritually, can manipulate the truth on a conceptual level, and can reality warp)
Alduin has also stated Shor (Lorkhan) wasn’t a threat to him, and he told his father Akatosh he wasn’t bound by him & couldn’t be stopped (until TLD showed up)

Not just that but Dagon wasn't always a Daedric Prince. He was a King Leaper Demon and became a Daedric Prince when Alduin cursed him so Mehrunes Dagon, the Daedric Prince was created by Alduin wich would mean that Alduin isn't just more powerful than the Daedric Prince but that he is far more powerful than Mehrunes.

Mehrunes Dagon already crushed Molag Bal and his empire of Dreughs in the previous Kalpa. In fact, they were squashed so hard the entire continent of Lygg (their home) was sunk and the species' collective intelligence was severely diminished.
Bookofwords and Molag bal isn’t bullshit at conquering, he didn’t succeed in conquering Tamriel, but he captured the prophet, Lyris Titanborn (though through a sacrifice) and Sai Sahan, so he would win still

Eating a planet filled with mortals and protected by powerful mages and warriors is impressive, but eating a literal gods plane of existence is a whole different ball game. Especially considering he FAILED to eat the mortal plane to begin with. Dagon would wreck Alduin, especially if he invade d the Deadlands. That would be suicide for the dragon.

This one isn't actually a tough call, Mehrunes Dagon was transformed into a Daedric prince, much the same way that Trinimac was changed into Malacath by Boethiah, by Alduin. Alduin himself is either an aspect of Akatosh, a creation of Akatosh or a literal CHILD of Akatosh, but despite this, he is the most powerful aspect of Akatosh(if you prefer the aspect theory). Martin Septim, after changing into an avatar of Akatosh, kicked Mehrunes Dagon's four armed tuccus but good, that was just an avatar of a weakened entity that was dreamed up by one of two first entities.....what do you think the world eater, the firstborn of Akatosh, his most powerful aspect(effectively the beginning and end of each Kalpa) would do to the very Daedric prince he created out of the leaper demon king? Probably devour him and his whole derned realm....at least that's what I think.
Also it is not sure if Alduin exactly created Dagon since the Destruction already existed before Alduin was created by Akatosh which states that Dagon probably already existed from the beginning of time.
duke of nuke, such is the paradoxical nature of the Aedra, Daedra and almost all other aspects of elder scrolls lore. However, don't take My word on this, Canon, for the Elder Scrolls at least, is less about what Bethesda says, and more about the "legends" that are espoused by current and former Bethesda Employees, and the volume that says anything about this, Michael Kirkbride's Aldudagga(former Bethesda Employee who actually is continually responsible for a goodly deal of tES lore, see link: en.uesp.net/wiki/General:Michael_Kirkbride )explains that Mehrunes Dagon was actually created by Alduin through the act of "cursing" him to oblivion, only to return when all the things that he'd "Stolen" to the new Kalpas in previous incarnations had been destroyed. This was effectively the creation of Mehrunes Dagon, however, when he was cast from being a simple demon king into being a Daedric Lord, he was effectively locked into and always was and just created at that moment situation.

It was prophesied that Alduin would return to end the world if the dragonborn wasn't there to stop him. Dagon fell to an Amulet of Kings which is an Aedric artifact, no artifact bests Alduin but the very thu'um Dragonrend which would disorient him for a short time. It's up to the dragonborn to combine thu'um and skill to take the mighty dovah down which in the main story - you had help with 3 legendary warriors who learned the ways of the thu'um thanks to Paarthurnax and Kyne to aid you. Without the Aedra, neither would fall, without the Dovahkiin, Alduin would've ended the world. It's really a pantheon vs pantheon when you think about it. We would need Bethesda to come up with an actual lore-friendly and official power scale.

However, I do not believe this is in game canon. MK has written tons of things outside the game that are unofficial, and some things just seem like Bethesda would not clearly accept them (the 5th age sci-if stuff) so you can’t take any of it as canon.
I think this fight largely comes down to who is fighting in their sphere.
The Alduin that fought LDB was weakened, because he was trying to conquer rather than devour, and so was outside his purpose/sphere.
The Dagon that fought Akatosh/Martin was weakened because he was on Nirn, and Aedra should be more powerful than Daedra on Nirn. Though, whether Martin had anything like Akatosh’s full power is also unclear.
So that should mean Alduin wins easily on Nirn if he’s trying to devour the world, and Dagon wins in the Deadlands. With it being unclear who wins on Nirn if both are trying to conquer - both operating outside their sphere.
My question though, is does Alduin need to devour the planes of Oblivion to start a new Kalpa? Or does he only eat Nirn?
Because if he eats the Oblivion planes as well, then even in the Deadlands, if Alduin is trying to devour Dagon stands no chance.
I would think that to reset a Kalpa, Alduin would need to devour everything including Oblivion planes, else the Daedra wouldn’t reset. But I don’t recall reading about Alduin devouring anything but Nirn...

Maybe the main reason why almost all daedric princes in skyrim wants the Dragonborn to be their champion is because they fear Alduin and it would be a great help if they made the Dragonborn more powerful by giving him/her their artifacts just to ensure that Alduin really is defeated.
Not quite correct. TLDR; every single PC of every ES game is a Shezerine. That's why the Daedra are willing to help you to pull influence. You're a BIG prise to take.

And to be fair on Dagon's side, this "weak avatar" of Akatosh was created by none other than the Amulet of Kings, the most important Aedra artifact on all Nirn and the one who used it was also a Dragonborn. The entire Septim line are Dragonborn. That certainly sounds more impressive than 4 ordinary Dragonborn, 3 of which were dead. Not to mention Dagon didn't even die. He was simply forced back into Oblivion and locked inside

It's important to keep game mechanics and lore separate. I've seen this in a lot of comments and it doesn't make much sense. I'd also like to point out a couple of other things.
The dragon born 'defeats' Alduin with the 1 ability that it can be done with. Dagon is not dragonborn, he doesn't have that ability.
Mehrunes razor (although entwined with lore) cannot be assigned the same abilities that it has in-game, otherwise Alduin could pass the collision boundaries in white run and become immune to all damage. Hence, it is important to define between the two. The razor is just a very sharp dagger belonging to a daedric prince from a lore perspective.
Assuming a mutual combat zone (I.e Nirn), BOTH parties are weakened because they're both just fragments of the true power that thier gods represent.
I'd ask a question of the comments because I don't know, would the daedric technically be affected at all by an end of time? Like, the aedra aren't, right? So surely the same would stand for their evil counterparts...

Lore wise alduin will at some point destroy the realms of mundus, aetherius, and the planes of oblivion, so if he was at full world eater power he would annihilate dagon no question, I'm not sure how how strong he would be on nirn, but he is an aspect of akatosh and as we saw before, an aspect of akatosh can defeat a weakened mehrunes dagon on nirn.
Akatosh Is weakend by sacrifising part of his Powers to create Nirn. Merhun refused And have all of his Powers. Aedras Are in general weaker than Daedras. Becouse part of them Is Born itself And after end of Nirn they all be gone. Alduin Is Akatosh creation. Acatosh Will end with Nirn. Merhun Will still be sitting in his Oblivion realm.

Alduin. Both are godlike beings and neither would permanently die, however, the army of daedra would not last against the army of dragons, simply because dragons would fly and shout down, where as only archers and mages could do anything. yes, many dragons would be killed but more daedra would be. plus, alduin could easily do his ritual to bring them back. as for dagon and alduin, as you pointed out dagon didn't do to well against dragon fire last time, and i think alduin would be stronger than an avatar of his father

I'm not that good on the lore of akatosh but most of the nine divines, aside Talos are Aedra I think. And Aedra lost a lot of their power creating Mundus whereas the A Daedric prince is still full powered alneit they are weakened severely on Nirn. So if akatosh is a Aedra(which I belive he is) if akatosh straight went to oblivion to fight Dagon wouldn't Dagon technically be stronger? And Alduin is a fragment? of akatosh. Trying to scale gods is difficult, as we are not sure what they are truly capable of. I suppose from a logical point, in the deadlands I would say Dagon, however in Nirn I'd say alduin.

1. Alduin is the strongest aspect of Akatosh, we previoulsy witnessed how just an Avatar of Akatosh defeated Dagon.
2. The only way to "defeat" Alduin is with the Dragonrend, a shout which makes Alduin experience "mortality", meaning he is a God.
3. Aside from the fact that he can only be beaten with the Dragonrend, Alduin is well... a Dragon, meaning he can only truly be "defeated" by another aspect of Akatosh (Dragons/Dragonborns)
4. Alduin is immortal, he can't not be killed, not even the Last Dragonborn, the strongest Dragonborn of all time, a possible Demi-God and the reincarnation of Shor according to some theories, couldn't absorb his soul, he just delayed the inevitable, the end of everything

I think Alduin has the advantage here. Dagon also has an immortal army but Alduins forces can be revived on the spot by Alduin and they are more powerful than lesser daedra. Not only that but they all fly and can dragonshout. Beings like dremora would require time to reform while it takes literal seconds to revive one dragon

ANYWAY I do agree that Alduin would have to win. I mean, even if Mehrunes Dagon summoned an army of Daedra, would they stand a chance against an army of Dragons that Alduin could call? Also, Mehrunes Dagon was actually DEFEATED a lot more (granted he attacked a few more times, at least that we know of). The only time Alduin was every truly defeated was against the Last Dragonborn, and before that Alduin was kinda just cheated. I mean, nobody, and certainly not Dagon, could stand against an Elder Scroll.

if we throw game mechanics and limitations out the window and look solely at lore and logic, alduin wins.
it would not be a question of strength or endurance, if alduin fight the battle intelligently, dagon would not be able to touch him, alduin can do great ammounts of damage at long distance and posesses the power of flight, another difference is that alduin has the stronger army, not just in terms of strength but also in terms of durability, when a deadra is destroyed it takes time ofr them to reconstitute in their plain of oblivion, so dagon can not rally on his forces replenishing themselfs fast enough, the dragons on teh other hand can charge the prince of destruction without fear, if one of them gets knocked down, all alduin needs to bring them back are three words of power and when dagons forces are banished and scatered back to oblivion, he has to contend with an army of enemies who can blast him with frost and fire without geting into his range.

Dagon cannot be killed. he is one of gods, and on the same level of Akatosh himself. Nobody know whether the dragon that sent Dagon to his Oblivion was Martin, aspect of Akatosh or Akatosh himself. Only Ocato said it was the avatar of Akatosh. and Avatar does not mean that it is weaker than the principal. Most of all, the winner was not the dragon in the battle of imperial city. Dagon got injured, and went back to the Oblivion while the avatar of Akatosh died becoming a stone. You cannot say the avatar of Akatosh won against Dagon

Yes but the fact, that Alduin is the son of Akatosh so he is weaker than his father, and Akatosh even almost lost against a heavily weakend Dagon states that Alduin wouldn't stand a chance even when having his full power.
Then that means Alduin in World Eater mode could just destroy mehrunes dagon in full power because he is at his full power.

Think of Oriel as a being with multiple personality disorder, the personalities being Akatosh, Oriel and Alduin. None are more powerful than the other.
Or, an easier example, the Holy Trinity in Christian Mythology. They are all the same thing, just manifested in different ways. Oriel is God, Akatosh is the Holy Spirit, and Alduin is jesus.

Not all shouts are destructive. The Throw Voice shout misleads, Ice Form freezes objects (people/animals), Unrelenting Force just shoves people out of the way.
The shouts themselves aren't destructive (minus Marked for Death, Fire Breath and Storm Call.... And one or two im forgetting) it's what you do after that makes them destructive.
What about the shout of duct-tape?
