Always unplug your washing machine before you begin working on it. The lid switch is a very important part that should be replaced and not bypassed. There are obvious dangers from running a machine with the safety switch and many news stories of tragic results involving children. I noticed videos on youtube showing how to do it and it is not something that I would feel comfortable sharing with others because I know many people will permanently bypass it and I don't want to be the one who told them how to do it when something goes wrong.

Hi Adam this is Eva. I am a disabled 61 year old trying to save as much money as I can living alone. I had the same washer and ordered the same part. I was able to get it done. It took two days though. I will not cuss but that ground wire screw was a aaaaaa pain. At least I know now that I will struggle with it again some day. You are my hero. It took me long because I needed a 5/16 socket and ratchet. I had to wait until my brother in law could get my father's for me. But job is done and now to get back to clean clothes. Thank You so much for the help.

I just did my repair this morning and it didn't take long at all. I didn't use the adjustable wrench. I used a 8mm socket wrench and it worked great. This video is very helpful for all DIY people like myself. Thank you so much for this repair video. I'll keep your videos in mind the next time I need to fix something.

We were unable to do it properly until taking the cabinet/shell off. We didn't know how and so TH-camd that and then we couldn't get the shell back on and had to TH-cam that. Thank you so much for the video. This was exactly what was wrong with our washer.

Thanks! This worked for me. Mine was an old Kenmore (made by Whirlpool). Only had to remove 2 screws on the lower front panel to to lift it up and disconnect the wiring harness. Most difficult part was getting the ground screw off---used the wrench as you suggested but hard to work it when you can't see it!! Now the spinning stops when you lift the lid. Back in business 👍 👍.

Your video really helped me out today, thanks!! You explained it well and the fix went smooth. The only thing I did differently, was spliced the ground wire. I cut the old ground wire and spliced on the new ground wire with a crimp cap. Then I zip tied the ground wire it to the gray wire sheath to keep in in place. Thanks again.

Did it! I watched one video that recommended disconnecting hoses, pulling machine out, and removing the cabinet. I decided to try your way first, and even the grounding screw was not as bad as I'd feared it would be, although it was threaded opposite to the righty-tighty/lefty-loosey mantra. Thank you.

Thanks! This helped a single woman be able to fix her roper washer lid switch herself! ☺ It was a bit of work trying to get the grounding wire unhooked, but easier than when I replaced the water pump. So happy I did not need to move my washer out to get to the back screws....that was what I thought was going to be my biggest challenge. No moving!!! YAY!! Thanks so much!! My AMANA goes through the second to last function it does do the final spin. The lid switch seems fine. The girl who sold it to my said it's just a programming problem. After my 100th reprogramming effort it still does complete the final spin so I must pull out the heavy wet feather filled duvet. I have the duvet hanging on my door. In a day or 2 itll be dry enough to put in my dryer.
I put a small load of cloths 1 hour ago and reprogrammed it yet again ( heavy, normal rince) and just waiting to see if that worked. I'm not hopeful!
I had it unplugged to factory reset my washer.

I'm going to suggest (which the creator can't), but if you've gone this far, you can go ahead and just snip off the plug for the switch and hard-wire it together and work with a disabled lid-switch. It saves $4 on a generic part and up to $40 for some of the older genuine factory parts, plus it saves a load of time.

Thanks for saving me from tearing apart my timer to clean the contacts, I double checked and the lid wasn't clicking but shoving a screwdriver in the slot moved the switch far enough to make it click (and let me finish this load lol). Double checking the part # when the load finishes and ordering a $19 switch that can be here tomorrow instead of what would've been a $250 used timer on ebay that would take 2 weeks ☺
    Thanks again!

Rather than squeezing underneath and working with little space you can slide the top metal plate off by unclipping it on the rear left (the brass clip). Super easy.

Good video, but as some others have experienced, the ground screw is almost impossible to budge. Had to use my bare hands and a hammer to even get it to turn. Crescent wrench, as in the video, was ineffective. By far the most time was spent on this.

Thank you for doing a video on this. I was washing my daughter's bed sheets this morning and the washer was running fine at first but then started making a hard banging noise and after my husband tried to fix it the noise got even louder and then he looked at it and it stopped working. I went to check it and it had rinsed the clothes but water got trapped in a mattress cover that was in there and it got caught under the agitator and was wrapped around it a bit so I dumped the water out and then tried to start it on the rinse cycle again to get the water to drain from the bottom of the washer and it wouldn't work and the lid wouldn't click when I closed it. I think this video would be very helpful as we have the exact same washer and dryer that was recorded in this video. I will say that in the description below the part you ordered is a number off from what you showed you were going to buy in the video. It got me confused but I am going to buy the part you suggested in the video. Thanks again!

I need to see the bypass on Roper made Kenmore so that I can diagnose the problem. Thank goodness for other videos since you changed this one to exclude the bypass. I also watch a number since you learn from each video. I suspect my problem is the coupler between motor and transmission. But at least change the name if you no longer "bypass the door lock."

I have the exact same washer. Yesterday it began not spinning so I got on youtube and discovered a video where a zip tie was used around the part by the lid latch. So I was going to do that. As I lean over the washer to unplug it, with my weight on the lid, it began to spin...so I thought yep, I just need to zip tie it. As I was removing the screws near the latch, I heard something fall between the tub and wall of washer. Apparently the lid to the part fell out and down. Hopeful that it landed underneath I felt underneath the washer but it's not there. I'm so frustrated because I feel like the zip tie would have worked had I understood how loose that part was. Was it glued together?

My machine didnt spin but did drain. I hand sprung the clothes and moved them to the dryer to work on the machine. I began troubleshooting. thought it was the switch because there was no "click" on the door. Which I discovered when I started regular troubleshooting by rebooting it ( unplugging the machine and open/close the lid 6 times in 12 seconds) and immediately noticed the click was non existant this time. But after moving clothes over, I checked the lid again and this time the click was back. Hm odd. So I tried to run a "spin only" cycle but it would not spin. I decided to run an empty small quick load. And that's where I am now. Will update shortly. Yup no spin. Bummer. Must be either drive belt or coupler. Will check in the AM. Thanks again for video!

Yep, have the Whirlpool version around this same vintage, the clips at the top back release those and the entire front/top of the washer can be tilted back to get better access to the switch in question, and it also gave me access to the lint trap around the top of the wash tub while at it. Mine broke yesterday while washing, and a buddy was out doing errands and was able to get it locally for me.

Hello. I had a question. I replaced my lid starter and followed directions step by step. Once installed, I placed the setting to the spin cycle while the lid was closed, and everything was working fine. When I opened the lid, I expected the washer to stop spinning. Instead, it continued to spin. I don't know if it was a bad lid starter. Any suggestions. Thank you.

I have the exact same model! Lib switch is broken, but the washer is dead, as in won’t start. Same switch problem?

Pretty Kool, but I think you could have saved a lot of headache by taking out two top hinge screws in the back and maybe one cover screw to raise that top lid .
